Any of you become an expert with a food dehydrator?

Any of you become an expert with a food dehydrator?

I LOVE the idea of removing the water (and WEIGHT!) from an assortment of delicious meals and foods, having them not spoil for up to a week or longer, and mostly bringing them back to life to eat by adding boiling water. I love going on backpacking trips for up to a week or longer but the few times I have my food caused my back to weigh a STARTLING amount on push off at the trail head. Any tips or books or websites or other resources that you'd recommend? I'd like to try to become a bit of an expert on this!

Also, can you dehydrate anything or does it not work for some things? Can I, say, make penne primavera, loaded with veggies and garlic, and just dry out all of the water, and then reconstitute the water back into it and have it taste the same and have the same nutritional value?

Trip report 5/30 - 5/31

Trip was actually 5/29 - 5/30

I had Friday off from work so decided to do a short trip. It was going to be a two night but ended up just staying one night because of weather and bugs. I have a five day trip coming up next week so I wasn't to disappointed leaving plus I couldn't get a bite to save my life. I even tried the old wabbler and worm.

I know what you guys are thinking, you left because of bugs? Ha it's peak black fly season duh! And I did plan for them but what I wasn't expecting to be out yet we're mosquitoes...I didn't think about them coming out after that heat wave and they were thick enough to carry you away. I was sleeping under a tarp with no screen...now I know for next week to bring the bug screen.

As far as the weather. Maybe I should have listened to the ranger on the way in warning me there was a servere storm rolling in. Well I figured I could get to my camp and get set up before it hits, this was around 12:00 and the storm was supposed to hit around 2:00. I paddled forty five minutes across one pond then single carried about an hour to the pond I was staying on. Rushed to get tarps up and just in time the thunder started and it just poured. It only lasted a little while but then rained on and off the rest of the night.

I was surprised the surface temp on the pond was 68 degrees already, that's the cutoff for catch and release right? I guess being such a small pond and that heat wave we had.

Well now I know a few things for next week. Bring a bug screen to sleep in, bring deet even though I hate using it, and maybe a bigger lake or pond will be cooler.

Cedar river - paddle to flow?

Hi all, heading up to ADK's the week of June 6 coming up. Looking for an easy kayak paddle to a primitive camp area. Where Cedar River rd's pavement ends, it looks like there's a small parking lot about 2/3 of a mile down the dirt road. Is it possible to park there, paddle the ~4 miles UP river to Cedar Flow?

I'm thinking of doing that, spending a night or two at a primitive site around the flow, doing some day paddles/hikes, then doing the 4 miles down river back to the car. I think the river flows North if i'm not mistaken.

I know you can drive the ~5 miles on the dirt road to the Flow itself, but my 3-series bmw does not really enjoy dirt roads in the ADK's haha.

Any other "easy kayak paddle to primitive site" suggestions for this time of year? I have a couple ADK paddle maps, but the selection is overwhelming!

many thanks!

Eastman Lake SMWF 4-28-20

finally figured out how to post pics, aren't you proud of me?

after some helpful hints and a few tries, we finally made to Eastman Lake, coming in from the Kane Mtn FT trailhead. easy 2 mile hour long jaunt to Indian Lake, then a mile bushwhack to Eastman. about an hr to get to Eastman tho. nice open woods, but there are a lot of cliffs to get around.
got to Eastman about where the old camp used to be, found the woodstove and various debris. did a circumnavigation of the lake in a CCW direction. kept an eye out for campsites and stashed boats. no boats but a lot of sites.
this is really 2 separate lakes, divided by a beaver dam and short channel. thick evergreens around the shoreline, but usually there was enough shore to walk right by the water. did go to the lower part and down to the outlet, but didn't do a circumnavigation of the lower part, which i regret now.
lots of birds, including a very vocal pair of seagulls. saw some fresh bear tracks.
the only fire ring i saw was right on shore on rock next to the beaver dam, been a while since someones been there. at the old camp there was some nice spots to camp legally, w/ a nice view of the lake.
coming back i went a bit further west and descended off the plateau that Eastman sits on, lots of cliffs, WF's, and huge erratics, also the remnants of 2 old camps down by the outlet of Indian Lake. the outlet actually disappears under a bunch of boulders, which is a good place to cross an otherwise swampy area.
so a nice quiet spot that's relatively easy to get to, just the thought of lugging a boat up there keeps me from going back right away.

Editing and managing GPX files

What is the best GPX viewer now? I use GPS Track Editor and Base Camp, but both have problems, especially for my older files created by Garmin which have many sub tracks. I've tried using Google Earth Pro, but first of all it takes forever to load, and the GPX tracks don't always show up.

The Hungry Hiker 2020 Menu

The Hungry Hiker is the new snack bar at the Adirondack Loj. It is now open for the 2020 season. This year the menu has been expanded. The offerings sound great and the prices are very reasonable. Here are links to the menus;
