On the nine carries route yesterday, one of the highlights was the esker part of the portage to Ochre pond. We spent most of the previous day watching 2 inches of rain come down while sitting in the north lean-to on Fish. We got up early and headed up the esker. We walked along under the white pines and hemlock. There were a dozen different wildflowers and even more mushrooms. Tremendous ecosystem on that ridge. Sorry we missed the lady slipper orchids by a couple weeks, although we missed the black flies too. We did linger a bit, even though we were ready to get the 1.2 mile carry behind us.
