Hounds and Hawk Runs-McIntyre Wild Area

A 4.5 mile hike in the isolated eastern part of the Mcintyre Wild Area along Hounds and Hawk Runs. Saw several waterfalls, gorges, glens, and a unique boulder maze.

Any calorie burn calculators for hiking snowshoeing that don't suck

Does anyone know of any online calculators where you can enter in things like your body weight, height, distance, vertical gain/loss and more specifically things that make the Adirondacks unique: Like mud, postholeing through a monorail, climbing up rocks, snowshoeing a fresh path up a mountain, etc.

I can find calculators online. However I feel they calculate very basically like a physics problem on how much energy it takes to move a 180 lb person 1 mile with an estimate on angle of grade. But none of them seem to be even close to one another. For a recent hike with my 190 lbs + 20 lbs pack, 2866 vert feet over 7 miles in 7.75 hours I get this:

I'll enter in info like this one which says I've burned 4500 cals: https://caloriesburnedhq.com/calories-burned-hiking/

But then this one I can enter more detailed info and it results in 1571 calories: https://www.omnicalculator.com/sports/hiking
Meanwhile I burn about 2000 calories a day to maintain constant body weight.

This one I get 1612: http://www.nwhiker.com/calorieburn.html

This one I get 3871: https://www.outsideonline.com/231575...orie-estimator

Which of these, (or others out there) do I believe? This is important to me, because after a hike I want to know how many cheeseburgers, fries, and grilled cheeses I can eat at the Noonmark after a hike and not gain any weight for the day.

Strange Noise?

I was camping on a lake this past weekend. About 3:30am I heard what sounded like a softball sized rock being thrown in the water. It happened 7 or 8 tomes in 10 mins or so. Does anyone have any ideas what it might have been? I'

Ice out questions from a float tube

Hi I bought my first float tube last year (Creek company odc420 ul ) and absolutely love fishing from it in trout ponds, I did exceptionally well last summer and fall when hatches were abundant and fish we're feeding, many salmon and brown trout. But this ice out sub-surface fishing for brookies and salmon is skunking me pretty hard and I can't figure it out ( always been a stream Fisher ). I've been out numerous times fishing wooly buggers of all sorts and clouser minnows, and Mickey Finn's to the shorline and deep drop offs with a fast sink tip line, stripping, drifting, letting sit, everything. Ive even tried midges under an indicator the other day when there was casings all over the lake. But no such luck besides seeing 1 trout surface. I'm still having a blast and going to keep trying this weekend for some hopeful success, but the forums here won't let me search and I'm just looking to see if anyone has any advice or tips that they can share with me. I'd greatly appreciate it! Thank you.

Found Memorial Plaque

Today on a hike I found an attractive memorial plaque, in good condition, wrapped in a plastic bag. I left it where it was. I wonder if anyone here knows about it. I did not memorize the plaque, but it talked about "many great hunters who have passed through this area", referred to someone named "Jake" and a date in 1962, and listed a whole bunch of names, including several from a family named "Hathaway."

I'm interested to know if anyone knows about this specific plaque. If I don't hear anything, next time I am up there I will bring it down and put it in the sign in box. (I did not do that today because I thought I might be undoing someone's work in bringing it up there.)

The run is on.

One scoop will do.

Avatar photo

Sorry to bring this up again, but once again I can't make the photos work.
I've been trying to upload a different avatar. Eventually I managed to resize it within the limits (both in pixels and file size) in a jpeg format. Now it shows, but only as a small symbol & "rickhart's avatar", but not the thumbnail.

I've always had trouble with trying to share photos, and with avatars, but this time I can't seem to get around it. And meanwhile my old avatar has disappeared.
Any ideas or suggestions? The thread linked in the FAQ to "answer" this is way out of date. I did try the Facebook idea, but it didn't work any more (or for me, anyway).

Hornbeck Canoes

I need to get into a lighter canoe (currently have a Wenonah Prism) in the mid 20 lbs range. I've been looking at the Hornbeck New Trick 14, Swift Pack 13.6, and the Placid boats. My favorite from my research is the Swift, I like the looks and especially the seat. However, both the Swift & Placid boats cost way more than the Hornbeck. I like the Hornbeck, a little concerned by the seat but will give it a demo. I'm wondering if others have used the Hornbecks or the other boats and what their experience has been. Did you consider any other boat when you were about to purchase. Any long term reviews? I can't find much via Google or Youtube on the Hornbeck.

Lightheart Gear SoLong 6 shelter

I purchased this tent off of another board back in November so have never had it out. It was used a few times by the previous owner and it looks to be in very good shape. My reason for selling? I thought I'd like the extra room for me and my dog but her training isn't going as well as I'd hoped. For that reason I'd like to get this out to someone who can use it.

This tent came with lots of extras: seam sealing, stakes, the carbon fiber awning pole and a Tyvek ground sheet. All you need to supply are the poles; either theirs or your own trekking poles. Right now this tent retails for $298.00 with no extras. I'd like to sell it for $260.00; which is less than I paid for it. If it's any help, I'll even pick up the shipping in the USA. Total weight for this package is 2 lbs. 9 oz.

If you're interested, please contact me via this forum. Thanks!

That's all for now. Take care and until next time...be well.

Pharaoh Wilderness hiking

Wonder if anyone has some current information on trail conditions in the Pharaoh Wilderness. I'm feeling the need to get out on a quick overnighter and since I've never been to the Pharaoh Wilderness thought I'd give it a try. My thought is to park at the campground and hike to Pharaoh Lake. Interested in trail conditions, snow, mud, too early to hike & ruin the trails,

Hadley and Spruce 4/17

Trying to take advantage of a perfect day and trying to shake off some rust after some recurring neck issues (found out I have no disc between c6 and c7), I figured some fire towers would do the trick. Looking at my map Spruce and Hadley would fit the bill.

Loooong drive to the Sacandaga Lake region, an area I have never been to before. Hadley trailhead easy to find, about 6 cars in the lot at 10. The Hadley trail is durable and mostly dry, literally like a sidewalk in places because of fires in the past. Only the tiniest bits of snow left on the trail and on northern slopes. The woods are open and full of erratics, looks like a great place for skiing. Great rock formations everywhere, especially towards the top.

Lucky for us a local had the key to the cab of the tower, although you had fine views without going that high. From the cab it improves the view of the high peaks clearly discernible in the distance. Closer by I recognized Crane, Eleventh, Gore, Snowy, Blue, Black, and easily see into the Catskills and Vermont. The summit alone is great even without the tower, with views in most directions easily found from the open rock. Trip out was quick and painless.

Quick drive about a half hour SE to Spruce. Only around 12 miles as the crow flies, it was a light years different hike. The trail was reconfigured in 2015, and the trail has almost no erosion and can be tricky to follow with the huge thick pile of leaves-you really needed the markers to get you around. Higher up there are a jumble of logging roads that look like they could be the trail-you really had to stay cognizant of the markers at all times. The grade of the hike is almost absurdly gentle, this would be a great first hike for families with little kids. The forest is much, much older here than at Hadley. Absolutely huge cherry, oak, birch, and pines everywhere. Super attractive cascades at the trailhead as well.

The tower was finally seen after the short 1.3 mile walk, and it needs all 70 feet to get above the pines at the modest summit. The area around the tower is strewn with broken glass, I'm assuming due to the easily 4-wheeler accessed service road to the radio tower that shares the summit. The view from the tower was even better than from Hadley if possible. The longitude a few degrees east of Hadley allowed even more of the snowy high peaks to be seen. Haystack, Gothics, Basin, Dix and especially Algonquin (64 miles away!) obviously seen in the north. You could see the 'Cats and Albany easily to the south, and the mountains around Lake George (although not the lake itself) loom especially large from here.

Fantastic 7 easy miles today, happy to say my PT seems to work so far-no neck issues. Towers #14-15, only harder ones left.

Digital privacy fatigue: 1-in-3 don’t know how they can fully protect their privacy online

With the amount of personal data shared on the internet continuing to grow, some of us are resigned to think that any attempts to maintain online privacy will be doomed to failure. Kaspersky Lab has recently discovered that one-in-three (32.3%) consumers do not know how they can fully protect their privacy online. This powerlessness towards digital privacy issues, called privacy fatigue, often leads to oversharing on social networks and ignoring the inherent security risks. However, now is not the best time to let your guard down – a lighthearted or trivial attitude towards privacy could make you an easy target to cybercriminals.

In an era where nine out of ten (89.3%) people go online several times a day, the internet has become essential for modern living. This has created a tremendous challenge for users to keep all their personal details under control. According to a recent Kaspersky Lab survey, nearly one-in-five (17%) have seen private information about themselves or their family members that should not have been in the public domain. This rises to almost a quarter (22.3%) amongst people who have children under 18.

The futile efforts to become less visible on the internet leads to a condition called “privacy fatigue”. Privacy fatigue is connected with living under constant strain, with a permanent feeling that third parties are taking advantage of your personal information, with all resistance being pointless. In fact, some people believe they don’t have enough power to stand against privacy violation. A third (32.3%) don’t know how they can fully protect their privacy online and one-in-ten (13%) have lost interest in how they can further improve their privacy.

Such helplessness towards privacy issues has also affected people’s online behavior. A fifth (19%) do not make extra efforts – like regularly clearing browsing history or using special add-ons to block online tracking features – to secure their privacy while surfing the internet from their devices.

Marina Titova, Head of Consumer Product Marketing at Kaspersky Lab explains: “The increase in data breaches, coupled with the difficulty in managing online personal data, leads to consumers feeling a loss of control and making them weary of having to think about digital privacy. Whilst there is no silver bullet, there are plenty of ways for them to reduce their risk. This starts with basic digital hygiene but encompasses using advanced tools and technologies to help them get their digital privacy in order.”

This longstanding apathy can lead to sizeable problems. Today, there are numerous cybercriminal prepared to capitalize on others’ privacy and make a profit by manipulating users’ personal information.

In order to secure your digital privacy, Kaspersky Lab recommends some simple steps to follow:

• Start managing your digital footprint: keep a list of your accounts and regularly check if your data has become publicly accessible. Create a secondary e-mail too

• Use special digital tools that allow surfing the internet safely, like Private Browsing or detecting any webcam or mic access by untrusted apps

• Install reliable security solutions that include a set of utilities to minimize the risks of privacy violation such as Kaspersky Security Cloud, Kaspersky Secure Connection and Kaspersky Password Manager

St Regis canoe area deer hunting

Hello,
New to the forum here and am enjoying all of the information. I have several overnight canoe trips to the st Regis canoe area planned with my family this summer, but am thinking about coming back during deer season with a buddy for some wilderness deer hunting. Not looking for anyone’s secret areas, but am curious about others experiences/success deer hunting in this area (with the usual ask wilderness success rates lol). Any help or information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Ice/Snow Conditions in HaDeRonDah Wilderness?

I am hoping to hike into Middle Settlement lake and do some trout fishing at the end of April. I'm wondering if anyone has firsthand knowledge of the snow depth in the area, and if the ice is out on Middle Settlement and the other lakes in the area?

Southern Adirondack Conditions for April 15, 2019

Here’s the same location in Northville, NY that was documented on March 28, 2019.

To say mud season has begun is an understatement. The rapid snowmelt combined with the heavy rainfall has turned the soil into a spongy mess. Above 800 feet, there’s snowbanks up to a foot high still, with traces of snow still remaining in shaded areas.

I’d avoid any trail until they are given a chance to dry out. If you must venture out, ensure you have waterproof footwear along with the usual outerwear for this time of year.

Here’s the current snow cover (I placed a red X where the above photos were taken):

Also, to give you an idea of just how much rain the area has received, here’s a comparison of the water level at Conklingville Dam (Great Sacandaga Lake).

The first is March 28, the bottom is today:

That’s a nearly ten foot rise in the reservoir since March 28th. There are also several flood watches through at least the end of this week. With the forecast looking the way it is, I wouldn’t count on any trail drying out anytime soon.

Finished the Adirondack 100 Highest Saturday

Southwest Snowy - Snowy - East Snowy, Saturday April 13th 2019

With eternal wisdom and great planning, I started out for Southwest Snowy Mtn at the reasonable early-morning time of 1:30 in the afternoon on Saturday.
I parked on the side of Route 30, near Poplar Point exactly 3 miles south of the Snowy Mountain trailhead.
From there, I began the Llllooong whack up Southwest Snowy following the Willow Brook most of the way. The snow at lower elevations was mashed potatoes and I sunk in considerably. Higher up, where it was colder, I floated much better.
I encountered a marsh from hell one quarter of the way up which is marked on the topo. (see marsh photo)
Harry Houdini would have had trouble getting out of this marsh. It was an endless maze of little streams through clumps of grassy muddy marsh and snaggle brush. I zig-zagged through this Dante Inferno matrix with 40" snowshoes on for what felt like forever before I finally found a route to the other side. I snagged so much debris trying to get across this sucker, I had like a live Dolphin, a pre-Baroque stringed violin, and beer cans attached to my snowshoes dragging when I got to the other side. When I finally emerged crawling out the other side looking like the Creature From The Black Lagoon, I could only think to myself that this must have been the black hole that scientists published the first photograph of last week.

From there I continued the ascent following to the south of the Willow Brook until I hit some cliffs going up the southeast shoulder of Southwest Snowy. I found some notches and chutes in the cliffs which I was able to use mostly my arms to conquer the cliff bands. Trying to climb cliffy-mountain sections in 40" snowshoes is like trying to play soccer in flippers, or knitting with boxing gloves on.

The good news is that once I surmounted the last cliff band, it was a short distance to Southwest Snowy. The woods were open and I reached the summit at 5:30pm. I was concerned at this point being so late in the day about what it would be like on the traverse to Snowy and whether I should just descend back down the way I came up.
Snowy looks like it should have all the hallmarks of a brutal Adirondack mountain. Snowy looks like the Captain in NH. One face of it is all cliffs, which usually means thick krummholz-y conifers and would make for a steep ascent coming from the Southwest Snowy on the ridge. So I had a lot of trepidation about trying to head over that late in the day.
However, the weather was warm, sunny and absolutely perfect. I was warm and comfortable all day, it was a perfect day to climb in the Adirondacks so I decided to keep going over to Snowy. This turned out to be a great decision because the approx. 1.3 mile traverse over to Snowy from Southwest Snowy was incredibly easy. Higher up the snow was colder and more supportive so I never postholed at all. The woods were wide open and the cliffs I had feared I was able to avoid and I never once encountered thick conifers. It was refreshing and awesome. I reached Snowy in
1 hr and 20 mins, completing the Adirondack Hundred Highest. I had always wanted to end on Snowy, and I was thrilled I made it happen.

As I began the descent down from Snowy I heard two voices. It was a man and woman in their mid 40s wearing jeans, little boots, with no backpacks, no shoeshoes, nothing. They were postholing everywhere and the guy was carrying a giant branch to try and help him stay afloat. I asked them: "Do you have any lights?" and they said "No."
They looked like they had never hiked more than a half a mile in their lives. They told me they had just decided to climb Snowy spur-of-the-moment when driving by. Wow. I made them take my extra headlamp because I knew they would be screwed on the descent since it was already getting dark. I was shocked at their lack of preparation.

I continued down and then side-hilled over towards East Snowy. I took an awesome open route that required almost no re-climbing. I reached East Snowy at 8:30 in the dark. I had tons of gear though, enough to spend the night in the woods and I even carried an extra pair of snowshoes on this trip.
Descending East Snowy I hit my only thick woods of the day for about 50 yards which quickly let up and re-opened up into wide open woods the rest of the descent back down to the lower part of the Snowy trail. From there it was only .8 or so back to Route 30.
When I got to the road, I had a 3 mile road walk back to my car where I had parked to embark on Southwest Snowy.
I got to my car and drove back to the Snowy trailhead where the man and woman WERE JUST GETTING OFF THE MOUNTAIN!
I was able to climb an entire additional mountain, plus have a 3 mile road walk in the time it took them to get off Snowy. They would have been so screwed had I not given them a headlamp. They were very nice and appreciative people, but hopefully next time they will think to carry the basic necessities of a hike with them!!
I made it back to Brattleboro VT at 2:30am. The entire hike took me almost 10 hours. Warm, beautiful weather and a great day.

This marsh was like being in a corn maze in Venice, Italy

Ulasan pengguna mengenai krim Varius Plus
Saya mengalami varises sejak berusia 32 tahun.

Bog River/ Lowes Lake?

Hey all,
We're looking into a trip into Lowes Lake/Bog River area. Lots a experience in the Daks, all the equipment, well prepared. Do folks put in above Hitchens Pond and go from there to Lowes? How isolated is the area? (hate crowds) Don't want to portage anymore than I have to. Does the water get low later in the year? How easy is it to find a campsite mid-week? Any information is appreciated.
Thanks

More snow at Lake Colden then mountain tops?

o Lake Colden Caretaker Report
 53 inches (135 cm) of snow at the stake at 2,750 feet (838 m) elevation.
 2 to 3 feet (60 to 90 cm) of snow above 3,000 feet (914 m) elevation.

Has anyone tried the iBobber Fish Finder?

I just ordered one on sale.

https://reelsonar.com/products/ibobb...=5c9e7a286ae3b

I was going to get a fish finder for my boat, but this thing was 89 bucks and I like how I can bring it anywhere my tackle box goes.

Great Sacandaga Lake's fishing tournament is on May 4th, hopefully this will locate those monster pike hiding on the bottom of the lake.

Sawyer "Autumn Mist" solo canoe

Sorry there isn't a photo but I will send them to anyone who is seriously interested. This was my first solo canoe back in the 90's but I've had my knee replaced so have moved into lighter canoes. The canoe has always been stored in my barn on sawhorses unless on a trip. It's the old Goldenglass layup and weighs around 42 pounds. The standard tractor seat is still with the canoe and you can adjust it fore & aft as well as up & down. A bow footbrace is also installed. Overall the boat has been good to me and I'm just trying to find it a new home where it will be used and enjoyed. I'd like $400.00 but am open to other suggestions.

You can contact me via the site or e-mail me directly at: snapper.petta@oneonta.edu

I live in central NYS and am willing to assist in getting this to a new owner if that will help. I guess we'll paddle under that bridge when we come to it.

That's all for now. Take care and until next time....be well.

snapper

PS - I can also toss in a solo portage yoke I made for the boat if you're interested.

Spring Turkeys 2019

Well gang, it’s getting to be that time with the youth season coming up Easter weekend. My fish and game club is having a special turkey shotgun patterning session on Thursday, which I’m pumped for.

Meanwhile, I finally picked up a copy of Tom Kelly’s classic Tenth Legion, which is some fine turkey hunting reading. When I called to order the book I had a nice chat with the guy who works there and wound up purchasing Tom Gaskins turkey call too. If you’re like me and like to try different turkey calls, give this one a try. It’s unique, and simple. ‘Hope everyone is having fun getting ready.

Mt. Allen conditions in 2019

Hello,

I am planning a late April overnighter with my wife to do Mt Allen. I have a few questions since it's been years since I've been out to Allen.

BRIDGES:
The last time I went in towards Mt. Adams and Mt. Allen from the Upper Works was about 2013 or 2014 and both the bridge over the Hudson and the walkway over lake Jimmy were out. Has anything been rebuilt?

SNOW:
Any estimates on how much snow we'll be hitting on the logging roads on the way in? Would we be skiing, snow shoeing, microspiking, or walking through the meadows at the end of April?

Typically end of April snow is about 0 to 6" deep around Old Forge, but I haven't been in the High Peaks at that specific weekend.

I am guessing 0-6" of snow in the shade with maybe a packed path and some mud. More snow at higher elevations. Is that guess reasonable?

WATER CROSSINGS: Reading this post really got me thinking: http://adkforum.com/showthread.php?t=25742 This is the time of year where crossing could suck and be dangerous. Any idea what warm-water flow might be looking like this time of year?

CAMP SITES:
I heard there's a site near where the trail crosses lower twin brook, and on public land. It's pretty flat getting there, but it's still 7 miles in. Since the private land is no longer private, is it open to camping under the same rules as the rest of the park?

Safety glasses instear of ski goggles?

We were on top of Marcy in Oct and the wind and sleet were cranked up. The sleet in the face was tough and made the summit rather inhabitable. Hoping to do Algonquin over to Iroquois this weekend and the mountain forecast calls for 50mph winds Sat evening.

We are accomplished "turn backers" and it may come to that. But I was thinking goggles take up space but safety glasses might be small enough not to notice. Any thoughts on that?

A tree falls into the lake....

Lost a very large old pine that had been hit by lightning back in 1985. Had been leaning badly, (almost 30 degree angle) since. Snow ice and wind knocked it and two others on a property to the south into the lake.

I already have two down from prior to my purchase, been like that for years. Makes for great fishing for everyone else on the lake. Only difference is that it fell into an area that is quite narrow.

It is a section where it is less than 100' to shore yet the jet skis and water skiers still blast through as fast as they want vs the 5mph per DEC regs.

My first inclination is to remove it and be a good "neighbor", but keeping it there would sure put a cramp into the speeds traveled through the cut.

I really don't mid the noise, part of the "charm" of living on a populated lake, but the erosion is becoming troubling. Still, it is an esker and will probably be another few thousand years before it gets to the point where it is an issue

I've googled, can't finds anything. Head of our Protective Association calls it a "hazard" to navigation.

Guess the question is, am I required by law to remove? Got a call into the APA as the APA Shoreline Restrictions are moot on it.

Do you have an *old* GPS receiver?

Do you have an old model of GPS receiver, possibly sitting in a drawer, waiting to be used on your next trip? You may be in a for a little surprise.

On April 6th, GPS clocks came to an end of the current 'epoch', namely a period of time since August 21, 1999. What happens now? New and old GPS receivers will start a new epoch. However, some older models of GPS receivers may 'rollover' and start the new epoch using the previous epoch's date: August 21, 1999. As far as your old GPS is concerned, you can now party like it's 1999.

I turned on my circa 2008 Garmin Rino 530 HCx (same generation as the 60 CSx) and, for a fleeting moment it displayed today's date, then it displayed August 21, 1999.

To fix it, I installed a software update.
  • Go to Garmin's Support page: https://support.garmin.com/en-US/
  • Enter your GPS model and let it search for it.
  • You'll be presented with the Support page for your GPS receiver.
  • Click 'Software'.
  • You'll need to download installer software. New models use Garmin Express whereas old models, like the 530 HCx, use Garmin WebUpdater.
  • Download and install Garmin WebUpdater.
  • Connect your (powered) GPS receiver to your PC via its USB cable.
  • Run Garmin WebUpdater.
  • In my case, it claimed my device already had the latest available software.
  • However, if you continue it will indicate there is a 'GPS Update' available.
  • Select it and allow it to install the update.
  • When done, the GPS receiver will restart.
  • Initially there will be no date. Give it time to establish a connection with the GPS satellite constellation and 'do its thing'.
  • Some time later, your GPS receiver will have the correct date again.

If you're interested to learn more about the epoch renewal, here's a helpful article: GPS rollover event could have some side-effects.

Hanging Spear Falls

Good evening!

In the process of making out the fall series of hikes and paddles and looking for a bit of insight on Hanging Spear Falls.

Burnside's book spoke of how fantastic hiking Rocky Peak Ridge could be if you caught it just right. As I worked on my 46 I always kept Rocky on hold as I waited for the magic combination of peak leaf color and perfect fall weather. Finally found that combo a decade ago and that remains my favorite hike of them all. So every year I wait to catch it just right for a second hike but that has proven to be on par with finding bigfoot, so I have been branching out on some short day hikes just to be in the mountains in the fall.

Did Fish Hawk Cliffs last fall - knocked that out on a perfect afternoon - so now it's time to expand the list. Any fun facts, helpful tips or different routes would be greatly appreciated. Leaving from Upper Works I figure.

Thank you.

Viking

Boot Insoles

About 6 weeks ago I did some hiking in a pretty muddy area, came home took out laces, insoles etc, did a nice clean up and rubbed in some sno-seal. Wrapped the laces around the insoles and set them aside. Asolo Powermatics.

Long story short, they come up missing. Not a trace.

So I'm in my yard the other day with no snow pack for the first in a long time and I find pieces of the insoles and laces scattered throughout the yard......along with parts of that lime green fake croc, (also missing for a good part of the winter), I couldn't find.

Did I mention I have three dogs......?

So, looking for some suggestions for replacement insoles.

Really no local source here for suitable boot laces either so I'd really like some options there. The boots have the brass pulley lacing system.

Thanks in advance

Kunjamuk Cave via Christine Falls, STF

Today, Tredhed and I decided to check out Kunjamuk Cave in the Speculator Tree Farm. Tredhed skied here many years ago from Speculator and I've never been here in the winter. We figured it might be nice to walk the road from the Christine Falls dam to the cave on this nice early spring day.

After some minor maintenance at the Hamilton County Mosquito preserve, we hit the large parking lot just off of Rt. 30.

Just 50 yds down the road, we crossed the Sacandaga River on a tired old bridge which provided great views of the rushing water.

Since neither of us had been this way before, we weren't sure if we'd need snowshoes, spikes or bare boot when we started out, so we were prepared for each eventuality. When we got to the snowmobile super highway, spikes were the footwear of choice.

The trail/road led up and down passing some lease camps along the way. There were some good views of Rift Hill as we made our way to the cave.

Looking back the way we came, we were happy to see a good (although backlit) view of Burnham Mt. just south of Rt. 30.

As we approached the saddle between Rift and Cave Hills, the wind picked up, but if a few minutes, we arrived at the "Historical" Kunjamuk Cave.

To say that Tredhed is a grammar aficionado is an understatement. The next few minutes answered the age old question "What do you do with a BA in English?". Our ensuing discussion about adverbs and adjectives promptly gave me a flashback to Schoolhouse Rock

Questionable grammar aside, we set out to explore the cave. Unfortunately, most of the cave was obscured with a beautiful ice fall.

However, peeking inside the cave, we noticed a nice icicle coming from the hole in the roof.

While Tredhed contemplated how he was going to correct the egregious grammatical error in the signage, we hoofed it a couple hundred yards downhill to the Mighty Kunjamuk River. Not five seconds after I took this picture of the bridge and Oak Mt, a beautiful coyote ran across the road in front of me. Gorgeous animal!

We then scared a couple pairs of hooded mergansers off the flowing waters of the Mighty Kunjamuk as we admired the fantastic scenery.

When it was time to go, we re-traced our steps back down the snowmobile super highway. It was a very easy walk and brought us the 1.4 miles back to the parking lot in no time at all.

Initially, I was a little disappointed with the trip. The trees were skinny, the walk was "too easy" and the cave was iced over. Sitting back and thinking some more, I came to realize that this was a great little hike. We got out on a beautiful spring day, we saw some cool wildlife and had the place to ourselves. Come to think of it, of all the hikes we've done this year, we haven't seen another soul  Just the way we like it.

West canada lakes fishing question

1.As of the 2019 stocking data on the dec site they do not list cedar lake, west lake, brook trout lake, etc as being stocked. Are they self sustaining now ( since they used to stock it) or has something happened?
2. The usgs maps show trails from Pillsbury to cedar and to Whitney. Do these trails exist still in some form? Best I could find was a youtube video around 2017 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1OXM2jkiDg) and I didn’t know if they are maintained by the dec or some industrious folks.

I've seen Conk's posts but was just wondering the above questions as well as if the fishing is doable ( not asking for any secret spots)

thanks for any info :)

How tech companies can address different privacy and cybersecurity attitudes

By Maxim Frolov, Vice President of Global Sales at Kaspersky Lab

A world of differences

Whilst advancements in technology have made the world feel smaller than ever before, the gap between the generations has continued to widen. Differences in lifestyle, values and habits between the various age groups have never been larger. Not least of which, how the different generations perceive technology and cybersecurity.

Generation X, as the last generation to have grown up without technology, remain inherently cautious and slow to adopt new technology. As such, they are likely to keep a close eye on their online data and finances. Millennials, in contrast, generally take the security of their technology for granted; with four in five (80%) saying they are happy to trust the safety of their data to the organizations they deal with. As members of society that were born squarely in the internet era, Generation Z understands technology on an intuitive level and are quick to separate their public and private lives. Therefore, whilst they spend 25% of their lives in front of a screen and seemingly like nothing better than share photographs on social media, 81% use privacy settings to limit who can actually see them.

With such a generation gap in attitudes towards technology and privacy; what should tech businesses providing essentially digital services, cybersecurity and devices do to allay these fears, demonstrate their value to their customers and formulate their offerings properly?

The three levels of security
The good news is that there are many similarities when it comes to consumer behavior across all the generations. Whether they come from Generation X, Y or Z, there are three standard levels of cybersecurity that always need to be addressed.

Firstly, the security of devices. Device security has become familiar to everyone in the 21st century. Whilst the younger generation have enough inbuilt knowledge to know how to protect themselves from basic threats. The older generation rely on the anti-virus solutions available for PCs, Mac’s and any mobile operating system.

Secondly, the security of money. The changing payment landscape has made it more difficult to protect our money. The time when we just paid with the cash in our pockets has long gone. Today, using a debit or credit card is by far the most popular method – with four out of five people (81%) having used them to complete an online purchase. The popularity of e-wallets (such as PayPal) and cryptocurrencies are gathering momentum too.

Finally, the security of the data itself. With high-profile breaches continuing to happen with unerring regularity and data becoming the subject of buying and selling, data privacy fears show no sign of abating. Facebook, for example, in addition to previous data safety scandals recently had to admit that an attacker had exploited a technical vulnerability that provided access to 50 million user accounts via a hole in the ‘view as’ feature of its app. Research shows that there has been a large spike this year in the value of stolen data traded on the dark web: debit card details are the most valuable, selling for an average $250, Amazon credentials are just over $30
A question of trust

Whether in the office or the home, for any technology to become truly transformative, it needs to have an intuitive user experience at its heart that will enhance a user’s daily life. However, as people from all generations demand greater security, trust becomes an important commodity too. Today, consumer behavior is increasingly defined by whether or not the technology brand they are purchasing from has their best interests in mind.
A cross-generational trust in a technology remains imperative to any new service or innovation surviving and become a success. Those organizations that have garnered a trustworthy reputation have enhanced their likelihood of selection, purchase or renewal.

A granular approach and maintaining a balance

With an acceptance that there are different privacy drivers between the different generations, should organizations tailor their offerings accordingly? Yes and no. The truth is that your marketing strategy shouldn’t be defined by age alone. A more granular approach is always recommended and can be done through the creation of different personas. All millennials, for example, are not the same. One may be single and a mid-level manager in an accountancy firm, another may be married with two kids and play in a symphonic orchestra.

Imagine a company has five defined target audiences including ‘digital office workers’ or ‘school teenagers’. This is only the tip of the iceberg; each of these five groups contains around ten more granular types of audience. Once narrowed down, these granular audiences contain perhaps 10 to 15 different ‘avatars’ themselves. This could be a teenager from a wealthy family who has access to the most advanced gadgets, or a young IT geek responsible for their entire family’s IT. It is, therefore, important for organizations to consider hundreds of granular avatars when planning their marketing communications.

When creating various customer communications, it is important to highlight different use case scenarios for each small group and show how the product meets their habits and needs. Organizations should pay attention to the likely route of a customer’s journey, so that they can communicate with them effectively along the way. The customer journey through a traditional form of sales funnel doesn’t work with such a granular approach as it needs to be multi-dimensional and contain hundreds of layers. New digital communication channels, such as messenger apps, and emerging marketing tools can assist with this, however. This digital-driven approach to sales does demand investment and reorganization of processes, but it will enable businesses to thrive in increasingly competitive markets.

Whilst there is undoubtedly a gap between the different generations’ attitudes towards technology and the privacy issues that surround it; there is, perhaps, more commonality than at first thought. A one-size-fits-all approach rarely works as users’ attitudes inevitably vary on different issues. However, it is wrong to put these dissimilarities simply down to the year they were born. Organizations that produce and sell technology in any sphere should maintain a balance between broad values like the user experience and individual values for each target audience.

Mount Gilligan

Plan on hiking to Rocky Peak Ridge late May via the East Trail and was curious if a clear day on top of Mount Gilligan would offer good views of RPR, Bald and Blueberry Cobbles?

Sly Pond Trail Condition?

Has anyone attempted the Sly Pond trail in Moose River Plains recently? I tried it last several years ago and lost the trail beyond a couple of beaver ponds. I'm thinking of trying it again this year and was wondering if any work had been done on it recently. I think I heard that it was going to become a segment of the North Country Trail.
