Short hike campsite low traffic ideas

Have been following posts about High Peaks area specifically and other areas in general getting trampled.

I have the opportunity to get away this weekend and am looking for less traveled options. Usually we are ok going pretty far in but this time we have a new comer so am looking for places where to can pitch your tent withing sight of your car or a hike in less than 2 miles (or so). Thought I was heading up Sun evening but I think that is getting pushed up to Saturday so am concerned about crowds as well. Looking in South East ADK's - staying away from High Peak circus. I understand some of my requirements contradict (easy to get to, no one there) but I am sure there are some nooks and crannies out there...

My thoughts so far:
Wakely Dam area: close to water, some car sites. I believe there is a trail that leads to a site to the right as you cross the bridge.

Wakely Pond

Good Luck Lake in Ferris Lake Wild Forest

Nine Corners lake in Ferris Lake Wild Forest

If the "fishing hole" rule applies (why should I publicize my gem of a spot) maybe a PM?

Thanks - trying to introduce someone to great outdoors AND convince an experienced person that the ADK's are way more than 46 peaks.

Allen via macintyre east tract

Hey, just wondering if anyone had done Allen via the macintyre east tract this summer? I heard they are ripping up parts of the road and it isn’t making this route all that great at the moment. Going to hit it Sunday and wondering if I should explore the newer route it just hit the old route. Any reports of the conditions would be great. Thank you!

Oxshoe / Crab Pond

Howdy yall,

Any campsites of note I should be aware of? I've stayed at the Oxshoe Pond LT before, and if I recall correctly, there was a tentsite right in the vicinity but are others worth circumnavigating the pond for? Same for Crab.

I have the natgeo map and it only shows leantos.

Thanks!

Whitney Property for sale

Anyone got $180 million to spend? For 36,000 acres your looking at $5,000 an acre. Hopefully it doesn't get sold off and subdivided by a developer. This land is the missing link for some long distance canoe trips. Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Threat data is key to fend off future cyberattacks against banks in SEA

Amidst the increased use of online banking and e-wallet in the region fuelled by the pandemic, Kaspersky reminds banks and financial services in Southeast Asia (SEA) to learn from the lessons of previous cyberattacks like the costly $81M cyberheist incident in 2016.

The global cybersecurity company, in an online conference with select media from the region, highlighted how the financial sector can utilise comprehensive threat data to beef up their defences against sophisticated cybercrime groups such as Lazarus – the infamous cybergang allegedly behind the multi-million Bangladesh Bank Heist.

In a previous report, Kaspersky has since revealed that malware samples relating to Lazarus group activity appeared in financial institutions, casinos software developers for investment companies, and crypto-currency businesses in several countries globally, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam, among others.

“The past offers us warnings which we must heed to be able to build a safer today. This applies to the financial sector and all other organisations especially when it comes to cybersecurity. More than four years after the world has witnessed one of the most successful cyber heist to date, it is essential for banks and related institutions in Southeast Asia to understand how they can leverage on threat intelligence to foil any sophisticated attempts against their systems,” says Yeo Siang Tiong, General Manager for Southeast Asia at Kaspersky.

“For instance, our cybersecurity researchers have been monitoring the Lazarus group closely for years. Through this intelligence, our solutions can detect the possible malware they may use suppose they try to get into a banking system. We can block them, analyse the malicious file, and alert the organisation’s IT team on which tactics and techniques to look out for based on the group’s previous attack behaviour, saving possible multi-million losses financially and professionally,” he adds.

The $81 million cyber heist also resulted to multiple lawsuits, reputation losses, billions of fine, one indictment and arrest, and several top bank officials’ resignations and even terminations.

Aside from threat intelligence, Kaspersky also noted the importance of human-factor when it comes to securing financial systems. The global cybersecurity cited a report which proved that the cyberheist started with a series of spear phishing emails, one was unfortunately clicked by an unsuspecting bank employee.

Spear phishing is an email or electronic communications scam targeted towards a specific individual, organization or business. Although often intended to steal data for malicious purposes, cybercriminals may also intend to install malware on a targeted user’s computer.

The threat of phishing and spear-phishing remains present as Kaspersky’s network has detected 40,511,257 during the first five months of 2020, globally.

To improve banks’ and financial organisations’ cyber defences, experts in Kaspersky suggest the following:
• Integrate Threat Intelligence into your SIEM and security controls in order to access the most relevant and up-to-date threat data
• Conduct regular security training sessions for staff, ideally a personalised one like Kaspersky Adaptive Online Training (KAOT) which uses a cognitive-driven approach, taking into account the abilities and needs of each and every learner
• Use traffic monitoring software – like Kaspersky Anti Targeted Attack Platform (KATA)
• Install the latest updates and patches for all of the software you use
• Forbid the installation of programs from unknown sources
• Perform regular security audit of an organization’s IT infrastructure
• For endpoint level detection, investigation and timely remediation of incidents, implement EDR solutions such as Kaspersky Endpoint Detection and Response which can catch even unknown banking malware

Mouse Repellent Advice

So we have an old camp that is definitely NOT mouse proof by any means, but over this past winter, the little buggers really outdid themselves. Other than the usual nonsense of chewing on my window curtains, leaving droppings everywhere, etc., they nibbled on the rubber gaskets of my brand new propane fridge! Thankfully, the gaskets weren't chewed off, but another winter of gnawing might do them in.

Does anyone on the forum have any recommendations for something I could apply to the fridge gaskets to keep them away? The trick is I need something that will last from November to May that doesn't have to be reapplied every few weeks. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Kaspersky Safe Kids now protects children from risky content on YouTube

To help alleviate parents’ worries about their child accessing troubling content while using YouTube – one of the most popular streaming services used by kids – Kaspersky has introduced the Safe Search in YouTube feature to its Kaspersky Safe Kids solution. When activated, the feature blocks search results of videos with unsuitable content, such as those with drugs, profanity or adult material.

Nowadays children are one of YouTube’s core audiences with many of the most popular videos on the website aimed at young viewers. However, outside of kid-friendly videos, there are many adult themes that may have a tangible impact on kids’ behavior. In fact, according to the Kaspersky Family Report, 14% of parents said their children had been exposed to content encouraging them to carry out violent or inappropriate actions.
Therefore, parents need a trustworthy assistant that stops their children from accessing adult content, without taking up time or manual effort. To protect children from viewing risky videos while browsing the popular video streaming service, Kaspersky has introduced a new monitoring feature to its parental control app – Safe Search in YouTube. The feature is important for parents who care about what kind of content their kids see and what information they consume. While YouTube does allow parents to guard their kids from mature content via the restricted mode, they still acknowledge that the filters might not be 100% accurate.

The Safe Search in YouTube feature notifies parents about inappropriate search results, so they can see what their kids have been looking for. This means parents can be confident that their children are prevented from finding any content that may be related to an inappropriate search term, such as materials that contain strong language or alcohol advertising products, not just a handful of videos. Additionally, the feature allows parents to ensure their children stay protected by giving them access to a list of videos or topics that have been searched for on YouTube.

When the feature is enabled on a device, or in the YouTube app, if a child searches for any of the prohibited categories, the search results will be blocked. Restricted categories include adult content, alcohol, drugs, profanity and tobacco, as well as racist or prejudicial content. After blocking inappropriate YouTube search requests in the application, the child will see a message showing that the results may be unsafe because they contain content in one of the abovementioned categories.

“Thanks to the pandemic, children are spending more time at home with limited activities to keep them busy. During this time, they are increasingly turning to YouTube to watch entertaining, funny and educational videos. However, parents don’t necessarily have the time to check which videos their child is watching, and they want to keep them safe without continuously intruding on their life. With the new Kaspersky Safe Kids feature for YouTube, parents can be sure that kids can safely browse for videos without straying into adult content,” comments Elena Kadochnikova, Product Marketing Manager at Kaspersky.

Safe Search in YouTube is compatible with browsers on Windows, iOS & Android devices. It also works directly inside the official YouTube app on Android phones and tablets, meaning parents can be safe in the knowledge their children can browse the app without encountering troubling video content.

Bartlett Ridge, Haystack, Gothics water question

Hello
I’m planning a long day hike for mid-August. Specifically, I will park off 73 by Roaring Brook and the Ausable Club, take the club road all the way to the end, go up and over Colvin, up Blake (since I’ll be there), then down to the Ausable Lakes and up the Bartlett Ridge to the south side of Haystack. Go up and over Haystack, Basin, Saddleback, and Gothics to return to the Club Road via the Beaver Meadow Trail.
My biggest concern on these long day hikes is always water. Based on the map, I’m not too worried about water until past Crystal Brook on the way up Bartlett Ridge. A couple questions:

A) Is Haystack Brook between Lil’ Haystack and Basin a reliable place to fill up, without having to detour from the State Range Trail?

B) If so, is Haystack Brook the only reliable place to fill up between Big Haystack and Gothics? Anything between Haystack Brook and the one along Beaver Meadow Trail? (I’ve come down off Gothics via the Ore Bed Trail before, but I don’t remember whether you actually cross the Brook between Gothics and Saddleback, or whether I would have to descend to it, which I don’t really want to have to do...); and

C) as always, any thoughts or general comments about this route would be welcome.

Thanks!
Tom

Finger Lakes Without Waterfalls or Wineries

I've been to the Finger Lakes more times than I can count, with most of my trips revolving around visiting wineries, waterfalls and lakes. This time I decided to do something a little different and focus on hiking some of the trails in the area including the Finger Lakes Trail, Bob Cameron Loop, and Interloken Trail. Here are some of the highlights from my day trip on a very hot and buggy day.

Next up is the Pine Creek Gorge in PA and some of the Adirondack firetowers, which I plan to do next month.

Crowded parking on rt.73!

I took and exact count today of the number of cars parked along rt. 73 from Rooster Comb to Round Pond lots at around 10:00 today. It rivaled a crowded October weekend (and the Canadians are absent). The numbers were about double those of previous years' July weekends but due to the unusual circumstances of this year, no true conclusions or trends can be extrapolated...Just that it is busier than all get out this summer (and dangerous)!

Lots are listed as if driving from Keene Valley heading south towards the Northway...

1. Rooster Comb Lot: 48 cars
2. First oull-over on right: 22 (usually empty as it leads to no trails)
3. Snowy pull-over on left: 13
4. Hopkins on left: 22
5. Ausable Club lot: 28
6. Roaring Brook Falls Lot: 22 (all legally parked)
7. Falls Viewing pull-over: 12
8. 1st Pull-Over (on right): 32
9. 2nd Pull-over (on left): 13
10. Beer Walls Lot (on right): 23
11. Chapel Pond Lot: 13
12. Giant - along road right: 28
13. Giant - left: 24
14. Chapel Slab Pull-Over: 10
15. Round Pond Lot and road:20

Total: 330

These were all legally parked. All lots were packed full but if creative, 20 more could be fit in the roadside lots above the Falls Overlook - if they also parked along the white line as I've seen in the past. This would yield an absolute max of 350 legal parking spaces (with the Ausable Club remaining at the current parking of just 28 cars).

The most dangerous spot is the coming and going from Roaring Brook Falls Lot. The next most dangerous area is the roadside parking around the Giant Ridge Trail. Cars trying to parallel park with other cars going (within inches) at 60 mph is scary to watch. Third most dangerous is the hikers and waterfall viewers marching along the road (with no real shoulder) from the roadside lots above Roaring Brook Falls towards the Giant and Ausable Club trails...

What to Expect On Sunday At The Garden

Hey all!

My friend and I are planning to depart NYC on Sunday morning, headed for the Garden trailhead and an overnight somehwere in the JBL area. I've not been to the 'Daks yet this year, but I gather that it's more crowded than ever, and I wonder if it's unreasonable to expect to be able to park at the garden arriving around noon. I've found the lot full in previous years, but always parked within 10-15 minutes once a car left. Perhaps this year we should plan to park elsewhere?

For that matter, I'm also wondering if we should anticpate having difficulty finding somwhere to camp Sunday night (lean-to or site) given current usage levels. Thanks for any input!!!

What does Eugene Kaspersky get in his Spam folder?

We examined the contents of Kaspersky’s CEO’s spam folder to find out what spammers and phishers think might entice him.

We all get masses of spam in our personal and work inboxes every single day. It ranges from harmless invitations to conferences we’ll never attend and ads for goods and services to not-so-harmless fake messages about winning a lottery or requests for help, usually in the form of a money transfer. Spammers write to everyone: students, housewives, CEOs.

We decided to take a look at what finds its way into the mailbox of the head of Kaspersky, and how the spam in his mail differs from the average. Of course, Eugene himself never sees most of these messages — they are automatically sent to the trash.

Some stats
We divided the spam in Eugene’s mailbox into several categories. The largest category (roughly a third of all messages) was B2B spam. That includes commercial offers from companies, invitations to conferences, and requests for a meeting or phone call.

In second place were phishing attempts to extract Eugene’s personal information.

In third place were advance-fee scams — messages claiming to be from the lawyers of alleged relatives and other far-flung benefactors hoping to share millions of dollars with him.

Common business spam
Unsolicited advertising for B2B services and events is a fairly harmless form of spam. Many e-mails in this category are genuine commercial offers, invitations to conferences, and the like.

Some of them might even be of interest to Eugene’s colleagues, but he himself usually only attends major industry events. Besides, he couldn’t process so many business proposals even if that was all he ever did with his time. Therefore, such messages end up in the spam folder.

Business spam is often personalized: the authors stress that the offer is unique to the Kaspersky CEO and refer to him by name. But that does not redeem them in the eyes of the spam filter.

Among the B2B messages, however, are some that look more like spam proper than misdirected proposals. For example, the authors of the e-mail in the screenshot below warn Eugene that this is his last chance to register for a webinar. They’re obviously hoping to create a sense of urgency.

Phishing
The personal data of top-level managers is highly prized, so Eugene gets far more phishing spam than other users. For example, the message below looks like a voicemail notification. Unsurprisingly, to listen to it, Eugene would have to enter his account credentials.

“Nigerian” spam
Eugene also gets more advance-fee scam e-mails than the average user. The offers include not only inheritances, but also, for example, the payment of alleged substantial debts owed to his company. Most likely, the fraudsters hope that the CEO of a global company will think nothing of paying a small amount up front to engage an intermediary, which is what such messages usually boil down to.

Fundraising
Another type of spam worth mentioning is e-mails about raising money for supposedly sick relatives. Why supposedly? Well, a search for the card number for receiving donations revealed that its owner had a dozen sick children and an entire menagerie of ailing animals. As a company that supports many charity projects, we know how to evaluate them.

Ransomware
Another thing that winds up in Eugene’s spam is outright blackmail. But whereas the average user is commonly threatened with the disclosure of personal secrets, our CEO is menaced with threats of data leakage. Here’s one such example: “Your computer was infected by my team and we were able to access both it and your data. If you want everything to remain secret, we strongly recommend that you transfer $200 to our bitcoin wallet.”

There was, of course, no infection.

E-mails from strange people
A separate category of spam in Eugene’s mailbox is made up of messages that we usually call “e-mails from strange people.” These are messages in which the sender spills their guts, goes overboard with the threats (respond-or-the-puppy-gets-it style), or makes what they clearly think is a great offer.

For example, among other things, we found an e-mail entitled “Homeless people will go to jail instead of you” and offering Eugene, the head of a major international company, a fake passport.

Some tech lover told our CEO that an inventor from Kentucky created something that had even the White House aflutter:

Meanwhile, the author of this next message fears that someone is stealing his data through mobile TV and various radio frequencies, and confuses our head with a competitor.

The imagination of some supplicants is enviable, but that does not save their carefully crafted compositions from the jaws of the spam folder.

Coronavirus spam
Like any popular topic, the coronavirus pandemic was and is a spam magnet. In Eugene’s spam folder, we found ads for masks, personal ventilators, virus-related online seminars and conferences, and much more.

We found e-mails about the pandemic in all major spam categories, be it B2B, advance-fee scam, messages from Chinese factories, or any other garbage. Analysis of all recent unsolicited e-mails reveals that more than half are associated with coronavirus.

Barking up the wrong tree
A rummage through our CEO’s trash folder turns up seminars for accountants, promises of easy money, and ads from stores trying to attract customers. Such messages are sent to everyone and his dog, so it’s not surprising that Eugene receives them too.

Eugene gets even more spam than most people do, however, for several reasons. For one thing, the CEO’s business e-mail address is easy to find, and those who use it include people who genuinely want to reach out to the company but don’t know who the proper contact person is.

And for another, there seems to be a certain thrill in attacking someone whose very name is synonymous with fighting cybercrime. What’s more, if an attack on the guy at the top were to succeed, the profits would be phenomenal. At least that seems to be the thought that motivates scammers and spammers to keep clicking the send button.

The strategic strength of experiential marketing

More and more companies are relying on experiential marketing strategies to increase their offer of goods and services. Here's how to improve the shopping experience by transforming it into a central element of the marketing plan

One of the main trends involving today's consumers is their changed relationship with the shopping experience: customers no longer seek only products to buy, but experiences to live. The trend involves various sectors across the board, from the world of retail to tourism and obliges anyone involved in marketing to ask new questions. Understanding how to transform the moment of purchase in the store into a memorable experience is one of the biggest challenges of today and experiential marketing is the best option to attract customers to your store in an innovative and engaging way.

The focus on quality and characteristics of the product being marketed are unfortunately no longer sufficient nor able to guarantee a scalable and lasting success. An experiential approach is indispensable for creating a bond with potential customers as well as for retaining the usual ones. But what exactly is experiential marketing and how can it be applied in practice to your store? Let's see together the characteristics and benefits of this new advantageous paradigm.

What is experiential marketing?

In experiential marketing what is placed at the center of the interaction between the company and the customer is personal experimentation and direct experience . The experiential marketing strategies aim to involve customers with activities that convert them from a simple passive spectator to a leading actor. There are really many options available to those who want to implement this winning new approach to their retail business and range from events and tastings, to pop-up stores to collaborations with local realities.

An ever-increasing number of both small and large brands are choosing to include offline events and local marketing initiatives in their communication campaigns, aware of how the active participation of the target user is fundamental for success today. The skilful mix of online presence and promotion on the territory is the ideal choice to give life to that connection with its customers and with the local community which can lead to incredibly optimized results.

Experiential marketing brings significant benefits to companies that decide to invest budgets and resources: even in the age of technology, a street shop is an opportunity not to be underestimated, as it offers the possibility of a personal relationship with the people who choose to cross the threshold. A community of passionate users linked to the brand and its values, an army of ambassadors ready to share their positive adventure in the store, posting photos, videos and enthusiastic comments capable of creating effective word of mouth. It is also a valuable source of information and feedback, to be used in a profitable way to elaborate the company's online activities.

How to implement experiential marketing campaigns

At this point, it is clear how much dedication of energy to the creation of an experiential marketing strategy is essential and can be fun: the possibilities that open up to offer customers more and more exciting experiences are almost infinite . Here are some examples of experiential marketing that are immediately applicable.

A unique experience in the store

Those who frequent a shop do so not only for the products they can find inside it, but also for the experience they experience when purchasing. Inside a store, every detail must therefore be studied to involve the customer at 360 °, also focusing on emotional marketing , from the structure of the store itself, to the color range used, to the music that welcomes customers.
The shopping experience consists of small nuances and is based on the mood that the store manages to create in its customers. The key to success, in addition to creating interactive and pleasant environments, is staff training : an enthusiastic, up-to-date and gratified sales team will be able to interact effectively with customers and put them at ease. In addition, small attentions such as providing free wifi, charging stations for smartphones, services for new mothers , play areas or refreshment points can contribute to making the time that customers spend in the shop much more pleasant.

Lessons, workshops and traditions

An excellent way to attract new users to the store and involve the most loyal ones is to organize thematic lessons or workshops related to their product category, for example by collaborating with micro influencers or experts in the sector. It is possible to teach customers how to use the products offered or give them useful advice on issues related to the sector. This approach applies perfectly to gardening or hardware stores, or even make up or games for children, but it can be used almost by anyone with a pinch of imagination.
The shop will therefore no longer be considered only as an exhibition of goods, but as a place of aggregation and discovery, acquiring priceless added value. A winning idea is to offer special discounts to those who participate in the initiatives and, in order to entice them to return. The same logic applies to the creation of a special tradition to be repeated periodically, which becomes distinctive of the store and contributes to the creation of its brand identity: thematic evenings, original parties or characteristic events.

Co-marketing

Co-marketing opportunities are a huge selling point for an offline store. Sponsoring important events for the local community and its market niche or triggering profitable cooperation between exhibitors are both excellent strategies. Collaborating with stores with customers similar to or complementary to their own generates an efficient exchange of users that brings value to the public at the same time and new opportunities for the stores involved .

This is the case, for example, of the clothing store which displays the jewels of the nearby business, or of the sports equipment store which offers advice from the nutritionist operating in the area.

Guerrilla marketing and pop-up store

Capturing attention is the watchword in experiential marketing, and guerrilla marketing tactics are perfect for the purpose. Singular and unique, they stand out and are memorable at the right point. Even the idea of appearing occasionally offline , despite having a mainly online business, can be successful: a pop-up store with an engaging impact is what it takes to offer old and new customers a new version of the brand, providing resources also useful to companies wishing to rebranding .

Interaction first

Once the interest of users has been captured with experiential marketing activities designed ad hoc, it is important to keep it alive by inviting its users to talk about their experience , stimulating it, asking for reviews on Google and other platforms and providing specific hashtags that can become viral. Interacting is an absolute imperative, to make those who have dedicated time to the brand feel important: the online and offline world will thus have their trait d'union, maximizing mutual effectiveness.

Being creative and always open to new ideas is the key to the success of any experiential marketing campaign. Creating enthusiasm, fun and involvement in one's audience is not an easy way, but it is the one that certainly pays more in the long run, goes beyond the single experience and leads to stable and highly satisfactory results and relationships.

Oswegatchie Question

Good evening all,

Looking at trying to fit in 3 trips yet this year. The last one I am thinking about the Oswegatchie in the first half of October, provided the water levels are kind.

I've gone to High Falls but would like to explore above before deer season.

Can I paddle relatively easily to where the portage trail from Low's meets the river? I am thinking about paddling as far as I can fully loaded. I don't mind some portages and beaver dams but if there are downed trees all over I am thinking about setting up camp just above the falls somewhere and exploring with an empty boat.

For those that have been up there, how did you tackle it?

Thank you.

Viking

Coming to backpack and quarantine

I am planning on coming up in Sept to backpack for three nights at Colden Lake. Being from Ohio, as of right now I am supposed to quarantine for two weeks. I would need a room the first night after driving up, then, depending on how my knee feels after backpacking and climbing Marshal, I might need a room after hiking out. So two nights in a motel and three nights in the woods. I am asking here if that would be an issue for me, hoping a member might be able to give me a quicker answer than trying to contact a government office.

What do you need to do to develop your own business?

If you intend to become a successful entrepreneur and make your business grow for long years, then the initial phase of the company must have a lot of planning, care and attention.

We know the difficulty of starting a business from scratch, which is why taking all the measures and having a lot of organization and planning can be the crucial factor for the enterprise to develop in a sustainable way.

Successful small businesses are created through much research, study, planning and training.

Even with mistakes and failures, a business with the necessary resources and strategies can face any obstacle and stand out from the competition!

And with that in mind, in today's content we will explain to you what are the essential steps that an entrepreneur needs to take to create his own successful journey.

If you are still planning or even have your company in full swing, you must follow these tips! So let's go?

1- Research your market

First of all, it is impossible to have clarity or vision of your own business plan, without analyzing the market and the sector in which you will operate.

For example: if you provide elevator maintenance services , how will you know which regions are most in demand? Is there any technological innovation that can hinder the enterprise? And the economy or politics, what impact?

Make a list trying to answer all the questions about your industry, so that you can become an expert on the subject and, in the future, you will know what strategies to use to stand out.

Analyze issues like suppliers, competitors, partnerships and everything related to your industry!

2- Don't be afraid to take care of all departments

Exclusively in small businesses, the most common thing is to see entrepreneurs taking care of many departments at the same time.

After all, the costs of hiring many members for the team can wipe out the company's working capital and still bring about several problems in the long run.

And so, if you set up a plastic injection molding company , for example, it's time to organize finances, carry out marketing strategies, give presentations, seek partnerships, among other things.

3- Focus on publicizing your business

A company is formed not only by the entrepreneur and his collaborators and partners, but rather, customers also make any company spin and develop.

Because of this, when you set up your own company, one of the essential factors is to look for an initial customer base.

To do this, focus on marketing and dissemination strategies, such as being present on social networks, creating interactive and relevant content,

In addition, if you sell security tags , for example, discounts and promotions are also a good alternative, since many people still do not recognize or have confidence in the company.

4- Don't forget about financial control

Not least, financial control is more than crucial for you to know how to target your investments in the best opportunities.

Without financial control, the company is not clear how much it is receiving and spending, and consequently, it will also not know what strategies to take.

The accounting part can be very complicated, so, help you with an accounting professional if possible and always use software that will optimize financial processes, such as analyzing cash flow and working capital, for example.

Kids in Malaysia embrace online learning during the MCO period

Following the introduction of restrictions around the world due to the COVID-19 threat, people’s usual online behavior has changed, not only among adults, but also among children. According to the latest data from Kaspersky, kids in Malaysia have paid less attention to computer games in recent months, especially when compared to the period before the pandemic began.

Statistics from the global cybersecurity company showed that majority of the children in Malaysia spent most of their time online from March, April and May on software, audio and video websites to search for files, which could be related to digital or e-learning during the Movement Control Order (MCO).

Software, audio, video category includes websites for downloading certain types of files.
• Websites for downloading audio and video files: movies, recordings of sports events and concerts, music, music videos, video clips, audio and video learning materials etc
• Torrent trackers and file sharing services irrespective of physical location of files to which they provide access
• Electronic catalogues of software which has trial period of use

The MCO has kept the children to continue their education from home, done by attending online classes using the laptops, tablets, or mobile phones. Declining interest in games can be explained by the increased need of having to focus on other activities such as digital learning and online messaging related to the same cause during these periods of learning from home.

“Most parents, together with their kids, would have spent a lot of time searching for learning materials online during the MCO. It is, however, important to remember that as we spend longer time online, the risks of cyber threats would be higher. The MCO in Malaysia gave an unprecedented learning opportunities for the kids in the digital era, and provided a good platform for the parents to be more aware of cybersecurity, which is beyond just installing an internet security application on their devices,” says Yeo Siang Tiong, General Manager for Southeast Asia at Kaspersky.

Cybersecurity Malaysia reported a spike of 82.5% cybersecurity cases during MCO period, with most cases involved fraud, intrusion and cyber harassment or cyber stalking .

“One of our previous reports revealed that parents fear for their children’s online safety but are not putting time to talk about it. Majority of them also agreed that they have, at least, partial responsibility for teaching their kids about internet safety. As most moms and dads are still working from home, we advise them to spend more time with their kids discussing how to move around the web safely, and to also improve their own awareness in terms of cybersecurity threats so that they can protect their kids better,” adds Yeo.

To ensure your child has positive digital learning during the pandemic, Kaspersky has the following recommendations:
• Spend more time to communicate with your kids about vital online safety measure. Parents’ advice must be specific, practical and timely, and delivered in a way that is useful and memorable for children.
• Surf and learn together. Seeing where your kid spends their time online means you can explore how best to keep them safe. By spending time online together playing games and so forth, you can learn from each other.
• Block and report. Teach your kid how to block and report when they see or experience something problematic online.
• Be real with your children about how information you put online can remain there for the rest of their lives.
• Install cybersecurity software, such as Kaspersky Total Security, it can help protect against some threats, especially when you are not around to monitor in person.

The ABC’s of protecting SMBs in SEA against malicious mining

Across Southeast Asia, the COVID-19 pandemic has seen businesses and governments attempt to mitigate the financial impact of this unprecedented public health crisis. Southeast Asian economies are taking a huge hit in the global economic crisis, with 64% of respondents from a recent regional survey conducted by Ernest & Young expecting a slower recovery extending into 2021.

While countries continue to experience different levels of success with containing the spread of the coronavirus, they have adopted different approaches when it comes to reopening their economies. For example, Singapore is currently in Phase 2 of its exit strategy from the circuit breaker measures, with most businesses and social activities allowed to resume from June 19. In Malaysia, most economic activity has been resumed with interstate travel permitted from June 10. These are clear indicators that Southeast Asian countries are making a concerted effort to enable their businesses to recover more quickly from the pandemic.

However, challenges such as cash flow problems persist. Almost 5,000 firms have borrowed S$4.5 billion from government assisted schemes in recent weeks in Singapore, while the Bank of Thailand has provided 500 million baht of soft loans to financial institutions so that they can offer loans to certain small medium businesses (SMBs). If SMBs are to ensure that their path to economic recovery remains smooth, they would need to address all aspects of their business operations and strategy – and that includes shoring up their cybersecurity defences to reduce the financial impact of data breaches and hacks.

CRYPTOMINING AND ITS IMPACT ON SMBS

According to Kaspersky’s latest statistics for Southeast Asian SMBs in Q1 this year, over a million crypto-mining attempts were foiled against devices of businesses, a 12% increase compared with 949,592 mining incidents blocked in the same period last year. The total number of miners detected in the first three months of 2020 is also significantly more than the 834,993 phishing attempts and 269,204 ransomware detections against SMBs in the region.

Malicious mining, also known as cryptojacking, happens when cybercriminals install a malicious programme on the target computer or by means of fileless malware without the user’s knowledge. As a result, this allows them to harness the victim’s processing power for their own nefarious purposes. Cryptojacking has also been known to occur when a victim visits a site that has a mining script embedded in the browser.

Kaspersky’s data further reveals that Indonesia and Vietnam were among the countries in SEA and globally with the highest number of mining attempts against SMBs. Most of the six countries in the region, except the Philippines and Thailand, have also recorded an increase in terms of this malware’s detection in the first quarter of 2020.

Country Q1 2020 Q1 2019
Detections Ranking (globally) Detections Ranking (globally)
Indonesia 481,944 3 466,297 8
Malaysia 121,048 19 60,025 26
Philippines 7,537 40 29,646 36
Singapore 11,728 86 2,898 92
Thailand 152,802 11 155,712 13
Vietnam 289,118 5 235,014 5
Number of malicious mining attempts against SMBs blocked by Kaspersky solutions and the country’s ranking based on the share of users almost infected with this malware

“Malicious mining attacks continue to remain as a widely underreported area of cyberthreats to SMBs. In this age where we are well acquainted with the infamous examples of data breaches, it is natural for us to pool our resources together and deal with ransomware and large-scale phishing attacks. However, this is not the case when it comes to cryptomining,” comments Yeo Siang Tiong, general manager for Southeast Asia at Kaspersky.

“As the symptoms and consequences of malicious mining are less obvious and less immediate than ransomware and phishing attacks, it easier for SMBs to disregard it as a mere technical issue. However, its aftermath is costly in the long run. The rapid increase of cryptojacking incidents in the region should be a wakeup call for enterprises in all shapes and forms.
Cybercriminals are doing this attack because it is profitable, it is high time that we acknowledge this and improve our defenses against it,” he adds.

SIGNS THAT YOU MAY HAVE BEEN COMPROMISED BY CRYPTO-MINING
In essence, some signs that may point towards devices being used for crypto-mining:
• Substantial increase in electrical consumption and usage of CPU
• System response will slow; the device’s memory, processor, and graphics adapter are bogged down completing cryptomining tasks.
• Wasted bandwidth will decrease the speed and efficiency of legitimate computing workloads
• Batteries will run down much faster than before, and devices may run quite hot.
• If the device uses a data plan, users will see data usage skyrocket.

TIPS TO SAFEGUARD YOURSELF AGAINST CRYPTO-MINING
To proactively safeguard your business against SMBs, here’s what you should focus on:
• Enhancing the cybersecurity awareness of your employees is the first step, but a highly critical one for any business that takes cybersecurity seriously. Having them understand basic things like what file/link to open will go a long way in preventing crypto-miners from planting malware on electronic devices. Also, it is worth creating employee and operational control policies that cover aspects of network management and facilities, including password renewal regulations, incident handling, access control rules, protecting sensitive data and more.
• Monitor web traffic – frequent queries to domains of popular cryptomining pools are a clear sign that someone is mining at your expense. Ideally, add these domains to your domain block lists for all computers in your network — lists of such domains can be found online. New domains are constantly appearing, so be sure to update the list systematically.
• Keep track of your server load. If the daily load changes suddenly, that may be a symptom of a malicious miner. Carrying out regular security audits of your corporate network may also be helpful.
• Ensure that all your software are up to date as soon as they are available so that you are well prepared for the latest cyberthreats.
• Implement the right cybersecurity solution for every aspect of your business operations, both hardware and software related. Use a dedicated endpoint security solution equipped with web and application control, anomaly control and exploit prevention components that monitor and block suspicious activity on the corporate network.
If you are already the victim of a crypto mining attack, or are looking to recover, here’s what you can do:
• Use a strong security solution on all computers and mobile devices, such as Kaspersky Internet Security for Android or Kaspersky Total Security to identify the threat, and enable Default Deny mode where possible.
• Kill and block website-delivered scripts. Your IT team should note the URL that is the source of the script and update the organisation’s web filters to block it immediately.
• If a website extension is responsible for infecting the browser, update all the extensions and remove those that are not needed or are infected

Prospect Mountain Trail Closed

DEC Closes Prospect Mountain Trail Due to Construction Activity on the Summit

Prospect Mountain Trail is now closed due to construction on the summit. The summit area, above the parking lot, has been closed to the public, and signs at the trail told hikers the summit area was not open. However, many hikers entered the construction zone, so DEC has closed the trail. The summit of the mountain and the trail will remain closed until late August while 500 feet of mortared stone border wall that is crumbling along summit lookout areas is removed and replaced with individual cut stone blocks. Due to the grades, the moving of the stone blocks is difficult and dangerous, especially with heavy equipment. The road and the path from the parking lot are blocked.

Pillsbury -> West Lake 2

Hi All,
Heading into the West Canada Lakes Wilderness later this month for the 1st time in about 7 years. I recalled 2 bridges that needed to be crossed when going to West Lake 2 from Pillsbury. The shorter of the 2 was in pretty rough shape, as I recall, & the other longer bridge wasn't much better. (memory is a little sketchy) What are the conditions of those bridges now, still passable? Nine Carries Route

Good evening,

I am planning to do the Nine Carries route this fall. This will be my first time up there and my primary goal is fishing/solitude.

I plan to head straight across Long and head up to Fish Pond where I intend to camp for 2 nites, and then head for St. Regis for a nite.

Portage around Mud? Bessie or Nellie worth the effort?

I had thought about heading back via Little Clear, but there is a part of me that wants to go out through Bear/Little Long/Green and fish/explore these ponds.

I am interested in opinions for the completion - would you add a nite and explore these ponds? (I could always spend another nite at Fish) Any general intel on these would be appreciated just in terms of solitude, overall thumbs up/down. cool features, which pond might have better sites. Not requesting anything you have spent years learning.

I could probably swing 5 nites if need be.

How would you do it?

Thank you in advance!

Viking

What Adirondack animal "hisses" like a large angry cat?

My wife and I did a 2 night trip in to Ermine Brook near Moose Pond in the southwestern High Peaks. On our first night, just after dark, a seemingly very angry animal was in close proximity to our tent and it was giving off a hissing sound like a very defensive cat...but whatever it was it seemed much larger than a cat and much angrier than a cat! We don't know if it was aggravated that we were there, or if we just had the fortune / misfortune to be near it while it was doing it's thing! What do you guys think?

Cybercriminals send ransomware to users of out-of-date web browser in APAC

Outdated or illegitimate software is like open doors for malicious users. The recent discovery by Kaspersky proves this once again. The global cybersecurity company today unveils a sustained campaign targeting users of Internet Explorer in the Asia Pacific region.

According to the fresh data from Kaspersky Security Network (KSN), an exploit kit dubbed as “Magnitude EK” has been actively evolving and trying to infect users in South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong with new exploits.

“Magnitude EK is one of the longest-standing exploit kits. It was on offer in underground forums from 2013 and later became a private exploit kit. As well as a change of actors, the exploit kit has switched its focus to deliver ransomware to users from specific Asia Pacific (APAC) countries via malvertising. Our statistic shows that this campaign continues to target APAC countries to this day and during the year in question Magnitude EK always used its own ransomware as a final payload,” writes Boris Larin, security researcher at Kaspersky.

Exploits are typically distributed in packs containing multiple exploits for different vulnerabilities. Exploit kit, also known as exploit pack, is used to identify software installed on a victim’s computer, match it against the list of exploits in the pack and deploy the appropriate exploit if one of the applications installed is vulnerable.

Meanwhile, malvertising refers to the use of online ads to distribute malicious programs. Cybercriminals embed a special script in a banner or redirect users who click on an ad to a special page containing code for downloading malware. Special methods are used to bypass large ad network filters and place malicious content on trusted sites. In some cases, visitors do not even need to click on a fake ad—the code executes when the ad is displayed.

Kaspersky’s close monitoring also showed that Magnitude EK is actively maintained and undergoes continuous development. In February this year, it has switched to an exploit for the more recent vulnerability CVE-2019-1367 in Internet Explorer (originally discovered as an exploited zero-day in the wild).

In addition, the campaign’s older ransomware versions used to check hardcoded language IDs which include languages in Hong Kong, People’s Republic of China, Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea, Brunei Darussalam, and Malaysia. In newer versions, the check for the language ID was removed.

“As of last month, there is still a small percentage of online users in APAC browsing the web through Internet Explorer as it has remained the default web browser for Windows 7/8/8.1. Using obsolete software which will not receive security updates and vulnerability patches is synonymous to welcoming cybercriminals with open arms.Three years after the infamous Wannacry attack, businesses and individuals should now be more vigilant against ransomware and other types of attacks. All possible entry points in your systems and devices should be addressed as soon as possible,” comments Stephan Neumeier, managing director for Asia Pacific at Kaspersky.

Kaspersky recommends the following to keep devices and data safe:
• Pay careful attention to the websites you are visiting. Do not visit dubious sites and avoid clicking random ads.
• Do not use outdated versions of operating systems and other software. Make sure that you install any software updates in a timely fashion.
• Be critical of e-mail attachments, including ones that are sent from acquaintances. If a friend suddenly sends you an essay that you did not ask for, that is reason for suspicion.
• Pay attention to the extensions of the files that you are downloading. If you downloaded an EXE file instead of a document, do not open it.
• Use a reliable computer security solution such Kaspersky Total Security for individuals and Kaspersky Endpoint Security for enterprises.

Sodium considerations and pack weight

I’m looking at attempting the NPT this fall again this fall. While the hike itself isn’t what I’m looking for information on, its packable meals with lower sodium than the freeze dried commercial ones that rabge from as low as 65mg for a breakfast granola to 930 and more for anything with meat in it.

Sodium in general is not to concerning as long as we keep it below the rda of 2300mg, which is still A LOT.

I need to take into consideration lower amounts as now I only have one kidney, and I cannot afford to impact its functionality.

So for those with one kidney, or those who are vegan, vegetarians, I’d like to know your workarounds and what you have done to keep the sodium down, and weight of your meals.

I am also interested in those who also take into consideration these benchmarks regardless of health concerns or preferences.

Thanks in advance.

Boreas Ponds Access

Having read that Gulf Brook Rd was open to the Four Corners parking area, we set out today to visit the Boreas Ponds for the first time. We found Gulf Brook Rd gated shut, right at the start. Anyone know the story with that? Sadly, gave up and paddled on Schroon Lake instead, since we were in the area - pretty enough but kind of like bicycling on a highway.

Moose river plains paddling

Hi, I'm trying to make plans for a camping trip ( the driving kind with a trailer :D ) and thought about the plains. I heard there is an area of flat water paddling and was wondering if it was near any of the campsites. I do know about Hell Diver and we recently camped at Cedar River. Also I would prefer very short carries or preferably none, actually something right at the site would be amazing. If you have a site number or area , I would be forever grateful. Yes I know this is asking for a lot but I thought I'd put it out there !
Thanks very much!

New road (trail) near Lake Harris???

I was up at Lake Harris (Newcomb) on the 4th, and saw what looks like a wide trail or road cut in from Campsite Rd off to the east, just before the road crosses the Hudson. And looking upstream on the Hudson from the bridge, it looks like a bridge...I don't remember a bridge over the Hudson there.

Is this some new access? I thought that stretch of land was privately owned.
Or is that part of the stuff donated by Bessel?

Also, there's a parking spot right at the Campsite Rd/Hudson river bridge.

Anyone have any insight?

Whitehouse, West River Road (Wells, NY)

I figured I'd throw this up since apparently there are people unaware, but West River Road to Whitehouse is still closed due to the culvert replacement at Dugway Creek. There is only the one (not great) road campsite accessible back towards Jimmy Creek. There is very little space for parking at Dugway where the road is closed due to equipment and materials and I don't recommend driving down to find out you can't turn around and have to back out, uphill, and around a blind corner.

Additionally, the road past Dugway has quite a bit of flood damage remaining and it will be a while before the road is re-opened all the way to Whitehouse.

Anybody been there recently?
Friends tell me they very recently saw dieing fish there and lack of 'normal' weed growth!
These are people who live nearby and or canoe there often.
Those fish and lack of weeds is abnormal there.
The fish resembled suckers but none should be there and were covered in sores.
I did not see them but told friends to report it to the DEC.

Golden Eagle and Hilborn Superloop-Tiadaghton State Forest

Cathead Mountain

Maybe a compromise?

Public safety receiving static in Adirondacks
By Gwendolyn Craig, Adirondack Explorer

Hamilton County Chairman Bill Farber says he is heartened that a number of environmental groups have heard his plea and agree an emergency communications solution is needed.

A fire tower exists on Cathead mountain, in addition to radio equipment for DEC and State Police. State Police fly to the site when a technician needs to make repairs to radio equipment.

At the southern end of Hamilton County, a radio dead zone has plagued emergency workers for years. Law enforcement cannot check license plates. Ambulance corps members cannot call a hospital.

After years of looking for ways to bolster communications in the area, a tower on Cathead Mountain in Benson appears to be the answer. The problem? It is surrounded by land where state law prohibits motorized vehicle use, a real challenge for building a tower, let alone maintaining or repairing one.

To build a road to the top, Hamilton County must cross about half of a mile of forest preserve, and to do that, two successive state Legislatures and about 19 million New Yorkers must vote to amend the state Constitution. If that wasn’t daunting enough, one of the leading environmental groups in the Adirondacks is not convinced a constitutional amendment is needed, though state agencies say it is.

Without a specific plan on paper comparing costs, planning a road and how the site would get power, the Adirondack Council is hesitant to back a constitutional amendment, spokesman John Sheehan said.

“We are almost every year asked to amend the Constitution, the forever wild clause, for one reason or another. Personally, I’ve seen 30 years of this,” Sheehan said. “It is important for us to have a set of principles in place for when we think it’s appropriate to amend the Constitution, and how we go about doing that.”

Others agree the county should have more specifics, though most are in support of an amendment. There is no bill on the Legislature’s docket, but county Chairman Bill Farber hopes lawmakers will vote this year to get the two- to three-year amendment process rolling.

Mike Tracy has worked in the emergency medical field for 22 years and is the assistant fire chief for the village of Speculator. Parts of Arietta, Wells, Benson and Hope are disturbingly silent.

“You can’t hear anything down there,” Tracy said, about his emergency radio. “We can’t communicate with the fire departments. We can’t communicate with dispatch. … The further south you get, the worse it gets for us.”

When talking about doing anything in the Adirondacks, there are a number of environmental groups to consult. So far, Farber is heartened that all have heard his plea and agree an emergency communications solution is needed. Now he is trying to figure out how to get it done.

The county is part of the Adirondack Regional Interoperable Communications Consortium, part of a statewide network to connect the emergency services of neighboring counties. Part of it involves radio towers set up all over the state, bouncing signals off of one other. They have to be in sight of an operable tower to communicate.

Most of Hamilton County’s towns are in bowls and it’s hard to bounce signals into them, Sheriff Karl Abrams said. Another challenge is that the state owns most of the mountaintops where towers can’t be built. So, privately owned, high-elevation land is valuable.

Abrams said Cathead is the county’s last link. Between its location and height, it can bounce a signal off of their tower on East Mountain. The sheriff’s office in Lake Pleasant has a signal that bounces to Oak Mountain, then to East Mountain, then up to Blue Mountain. As part of the consortium, the signal can continue traveling to Gore Mountain, visible from Cathead.

If Hamilton County is able to get communications on top, Purdy said it would also help out Fulton and Saratoga counties’ emergency services, which also struggle with poor communication at their northern ends.

The top of Cathead, including about 800 acres in the area, is privately owned by the Hatchbrook Sportsman’s Club. Nathan Clark, club president, said Farber approached him about four years ago to talk about an emergency tower. The top is already home to a fire tower and limited radio equipment for the DEC and State Police.

The club has owned the property since 1989. Back then, they had access to two rights-of-way to their hunting camp and an abandoned forest ranger cabin. But entry points were owned by someone else, and a foreclosure process put the land in the state’s hands, thereby closing the roads.

For a while, Clark said, the club could get special state permits for motorized access to their camp site, but then the state did away with those in 2000. Members sued the state to regain motorized access but lost.

The fire tower had been open to the public, but a DEC fire tower report shows in 2000, “the trail was officially closed since the landowners withdrew their permission for the public to use the trail.”

In 2010, the club pursued their own attempt at a constitutional amendment in order to get motorized access to their campsite, but many environmental groups opposed and it did not make it past committees.

Clark and the rest of the Cathead Mountain owners lease the fire tower to the State Police for radio transmission. To perform any maintenance or repairs, State Police fly a helicopter up and let off a technician on an old helicopter pad.

“It’s not accessible by ground, and it does not have commercial power to it, so it’s obviously not an ideal situation for us, but it’s powered by a combination of solar panels, wind turbine and a generator,” said Beau Duffy, spokesman for the State Police. “Maintenance and repairs would be a lot simpler if there was road access.”

Road access would be simpler for the hunting club, too, but Clark said it’s more than that. Many of the club members are volunteer first responders, and they’re eager to help the county.

Clark said the club is willing to give up about 480 acres to the state for 80 acres that would be for the access road, which the club would be able to use, but it would also be used by the emergency services organizations. The public would also regain access to the fire tower

The 400 acres the club would hand over to the state brushes the Silver Lake Wilderness tract and is near the Northville-Lake Placid trail, making it a desirable proposed swap for those with visions of opening the tower back up to the public and protecting more prime Adirondack land. Farber and many others also want the public to hike the mountain. There could be plans to connect the hike to the Northville-Lake Placid Trail, too.

The Adirondack Council issued a news release in May, saying the county could pursue other means to put an emergency tower on Cathead other than an amendment. The release irked a number of groups.

Sheehan said some of those alternatives could be the county using a State Police helicopter or hiring a helicopter to do any maintenance. He also suggested a road with a gate only the county had access to.

In conversations with Farber, the council has suggested opening back up an old jeep road that forest rangers used to use. The council’s “administrative fix” suggestions raised legal questions for Farber and other environmental groups.

“The Adirondack Council is wrong,” said David Gibson, of Adirondack Wild: Friends of the Forest Preserve. “Who wants to see helicopters flying up that ridge? It’s practically in the Silver Lake Wilderness. Let’s eliminate helicopter use entirely, which is antithetical to wilderness environment. It’s also dangerous to have choppers fly up there all the time.”

The Court of Appeals has yet to decide on what tree cutting should look like in the Adirondacks, and Farber isn’t willing to take a chance on a quick fix that could have the county end up in court.

An Adirondack Park Agency spokesman said it reached the conclusion with the DEC that a constitutional amendment is needed to access the private land on Cathead and that the agency is committed to resolving the access issues in a legally defensible way.

Former DEC Commissioner Joe Martens said the parties should come together and work out the details. He favors a constitutional amendment, but Martens said he understands why Sheehan wants to have everything on paper.

“Ultimately, if it goes before the voters of New York, they all know exactly what they’re giving up,” Martens said.

Farber said spending more money on an engineer and specific plan is a concern for the county, and some county board members feel enough has already been spent with nothing specific to show for it. Farber also believes there’s not much at stake for those opposed to a constitutional amendment if it were to pass one Legislature since it still has to pass again the next year.

“But there’s a big risk there for Hamilton County by not doing it,” he said.

Without those detailed plans or a bill, it’s hard to say how legislators will come back to Albany and vote on an amendment.

“We hope the Adirondack Council will stay at the table with Hamilton County officials and continue to discuss this public safety issue as we believe, based on our understanding from the APA and DEC, that there’s not an administrative fix for it and it needs to be done by a constitutional amendment,” said State Sen. Jim Tedisco, R-Glenville, who represents Hamilton County.

Little Tupper to Inlet on the Oswegatchie River

I have a week off coming up, and I'm eyeing the Little Tupper Lake to Inlet on the Oswegatchie Traverse for my days off. I have both the Paddler's Map and the Adirondack Paddler's Guide which have tons of useful information, but figured I'd make a post here also soliciting additional information since most of this route is largely unexplored territory for me.

I'll probably have at least 7 days to devote to this trip, although from reading information about the route online, it sounds like even 5-6 days isn't super rushed. I'm thinking I may try to devote an extra day or two to the Oswegatchie River section specifically, both to snag a few lean-tos needed for the lean-to challenge, and to check out the numerous campsites on this stretch in preparation for a possible future trip with friends (our annual "Duck Hole" trip this year will likely be a paddling trip).

My tentative itinerary:

Day 1: Put in on Little Tupper. Will likely be somewhat later in the day (after car shuttling in the AM) so will probably just aim for a campsite on Little Tupper, perhaps on the southwest end of the lake. If early enough, I may push on to Rock Pond instead.

Day 2: Paddle/portage Rock Pond, Hardigan Pond, Little Salmon Lake, Lilypad Pond, Shingle Shanty Brook. Camp on Lake Lila.

Day 3: Paddle/portage Harrington Brook, Clear Pond, Bog Lake, Low's Lake. Camp on Lows Lake, possibly on Grass Pond (I remember the sites being really nice up there).

Day 4: Paddle/portage Deer Pond and the traverse to Oswegatchie. Camp somewhere on the upper Oswegatchie (possibly High Falls).

Day 5: Paddle the Oswegatchie. Camp somewhere on the middle Oswegatchie (possibly Cage Lake Springhole).

Day 6: Paddle the Oswegatchie. Camp somewhere on the lower Oswegatchie (possibly Griffin Rapids).

I can't find a definitive length for this route (and I'm too lazy to calculate it myself) but by rough estimate, it seems like it would clock in at roughly 50 miles, maybe a bit less.

My day 2 seems like it probably has the potential to be a bit longer- so I may try to shorten it (possibly at the expense of making Day 3 longer and forgoing Grass Pond). I'll probably also plan to carry 7 days worth of food with me so I can add another night somewhere if needed. Admittedly my last few days are super short, but again, one goal of this trip is to target lean-tos on the Oswegatchie River that I still need for the lean-to challenge. I've also already extensively hiked the trails in the High Falls/Five Ponds area but may do some day hikes from the river along this network to stretch my legs.

Time permitting I may also try to do a few side trips. I've done Fredrica Mountain before but wouldn't mind a return visit. I've also heard that Grass Pond Mountain is a worthwhile bushwhack.

A few specific questions:
  • Are there any campsites along this route in particular that are particularly nice? I know some of the Low's Lake sites are really nice (and again, Grass Pond is one of my favorite spots to camp in the ADKs). But the sites on the stretch between Little Tupper and Lila are all new to me.
  • How is the stretch between Lake Lila and Low's Lake? The Paddler's Guide makes it sound pretty straightforward but the St. Regis Canoe Outfitter's website says that the "portage to Harrington Brook is rough." I also know that the south end of Lows can get pretty muchy with low water levels and am anticipating some potential rough going there given how dry it's been this year.
  • How are the rest of the portage trails generally? Has anyone paddled parts of this route recently and can comment on any major issues? The DEC's backcountry conditions page for the Western Adirondacks is... noticeably lacking in any sort of portage trail condition information for this entire route.
  • Any other side trips along the way that might be worth doing?
Thanks in advance!
