One Too Many Dix

Day 1: Friend and I set out for 3 day, 2 night loop hike over Dix range on Friday with full packs. Planned to bush whack from North Fork back to South Fork of Boquet. Leisurely 3-4 mile hike up the South Fork from 73 and camped at farthest designated site near lots of cascades on drainage coming down from Dix. A fire, beer, and good food rounded out our evening.

Day 2: Saturday morning had to redirect 2 groups of day hikers who started up the drainage to Dix, instead of following the Boquet towards Grace. Must be a common mistake. We loaded up our packs and headed to Grace with the intention of taking the Great Slide. Tried to access Slide half way up trail but kept slipping and after drawing a little blood, we decided to just keep to trail up to Grace/Carson Col. Met lots of friendly people there, several with micropacks (or no packs), cell phone maps, and unleashed dogs. Summited Grace and went over to top of bluffs for great views. At Carson, we dropped full packs, and took food and some safety gear to summit Macomb. Started to get tired on way over to Pough and Hough. Had trouble getting up cliff crack near top of Beckhorn with my pack, so I ended up going along a well-worn path to right, up a smaller bit of cliff, and then followed a very faint trail through moss and short balsam. Mistake. Ended up as a mini bushwhack to the top with a bit of exposure. The moss and balsam sometimes became detached from rock, but I maintained 3 points of contact. A few scratches later and with bit of a spooked feeling, I reached top and headed over to summit of Dix. Exhausted, we both headed straight down towards N. Boquet to look for campsites. Steep trail looks like some of it has been hardened with stones relatively recently. Thanks to trail crews. Found no campsites until we hit Boquet lean to, where we grabbed a nice site with fire ring. Brand new relocated lean to (occupied), picnic table, and privy. Quite busy there.
Day 3: We did not want to road walk along 73 from Round lake TH to South Fork TH, so Sunday morning, just past trail junction to Noonmark and Round Mt, we bush whacked southeast and crossed North Fork to south side. We followed contour of mountain to south of river to avoid the really gorgey, steep looking bits of Boquet which quickly fell away below us. Once we were far enough southeast, we dropped down to Boquet and recrossed to north side and followed it until we hit designated campsite perched high on a bluff overlooking big boulders and cascades. Then things got a little weird. From campsite, my friend went down to river and I heard him talking to someone about trails. So I went down also and stopped short when I saw this totally naked old dude standing there smoking a cigar and talking to my friend. He showed no signs of embarrassment and did not appear to see me, so I went back up to campsite. According to my friend, this dude was wearing some sort of brass ring around his member. Back out to TH in another 45 minutes or so. One of my odder ADK experiences and, pun intended, one too many Dix for this trip.
