Bartlett Mtn. Balds and Burgess Hollow Vista (PA)

An excellent hike from January to the balds with a natural arch, vistas, spruce and hemlock forests, Burgess Hollow Vista, and White Brook Falls.* An isolated, beautiful place with ledges, cliffs, chasms, and caves. *

Coyote Contest ban for NY - Would love to see it!
Very proud to hear Vermont had the courage stand up to stop these insane predator killing contests. I hope someday NY State has the courage and forethought to do the same! They clearly server "zero" purpose and are just about slaughtering wildlife. Old School hunters (who do it only for food on the table) would never support such a disgraceful practice. Personally anyone involved in such a thing should loose their license to carry IMO. Predatory wildlife are essential to a healthy ecosystem. Hoping to stop the practice in NY especially within the Adirondacks.

Old timers: Recalling name "Pough"
The earliest mention of the name "Pough" (for Pough Peak, the hogback between S Dix and Hough) I found was in James R. Burnside's book in which he has a July 1979 entry in his climbing journal in which he mentions Pough. Actually, 1976, following a recent correspondence I had w/ Tony Goodwin, who thinks the name was around years earlier and was pretty popular back then.
I know Pough is not named for someone, but rather a play on words (Hough pronounced "Huff", so Huff n Puff, where Huff = Hough). I'm wondering if folks who've hiked the Dix Range in the 70s or earlier recall the name and if so, when?
Thanks!

Layton Slack, Perkings Clearing, Speculator
Does anyone know the history of Layton Slack?
I used to camp in Perkins Clearing in Speculator with my Dad. There was a river that we camped next to from what I remember.
We knew Layton Slack and his dad Ol' Man Slack. They lived in a shack with no electricity or plumbing.
Years ago there was a picture of him on the internet and some information but I have not been able to find it again. I believe that I have video of Layton Slack on my 8mm reels.
Thank you.

News on ADK Moose
I recently came across this article from ADK Daily enterprise talking about Moose #'s in the ADK's: http://www.adirondackdailyenterprise...-drops-to-400/
The article made a few statements which I found vague and confusing:
1) There was a 4 year Moose Survey recently completed which estimates that the ADK Moose population at ~400.
Who conducted this survey? Was it the DEC? Was it in partnership with non-government agencies? I did find reference to a joint, multi-year Moose research project on the DEC website (https://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/6964.html). I assume this is the survey the article is referring to?
2) The current estimate of 400 demonstrates a significant drop from prior estimates of 600-1000.
According to the Daily Enterprise, the revised estimate of 400 Moose is for the ADK's only. But the prior estimates which this new number is being compared to (600-1000, according to earlier DEC literature) was for the entire state of NY.
Also, is this drop in numbers due to a change in Moose numbers, or due to a change in the how the Moose numbers were calculated?
After a recent scan of the DEC's website, I did note there is, in fact, a new estimate for the ADK Moose population (400), but the website did not indicate any "drop" in numbers nor did it provide an estimate for the state's total Moose population.
Please don't misunderstand my intentions here; I'm not criticizing the results of this survey. Rather, I am genuinely interested in learning more about how this survey was conducted, who conducted it, and whether or not the DEC does believe that NY's Moose population has, in fact, dropped. And if it has dropped, why?

How online scammers turn your tax into cash
How online scammers turn your tax into cash
Kaspersky Lab has published a report showing how online fraudsters exploit tax systems to seize staggering amounts of personal information from trusting consumers.
The report, including examples from the U.S., Canada and the UK, as well as other countries: France, Italy, Hungary and Russia, shows how:
By spoofing trusted government agency websites and luring users onto them, phishers are trying to collect enough information to steal both money from victims accounts and their digital identity.
In 2016, there were notable spikes in tax-themed online phishing in the months leading up the end of the tax year (April) in Canada, the U.S. and the UK.
In 2017, a growing number of attacks also focused on the months following April, many featuring authentic-looking tax authority websites that promised a tax refund.
Among the information that the fraudsters collect are bank card details (including PIN code), social security number, drivers license number, address, telephone number, date of birth, mothers maiden name, and employer. The attackers also retrieve the IP address and system information.
People trust government websites, and since tax matters generally involve sharing large quantities of personal information, an authentic-looking message asking you to share personal data doesnt always set off an alarm. Not all taxpayers can recognize a scam when they see one, and even experienced Internet users can be wrong-footed by the promise of a welcome tax refund. We recommend that people treat any online offer of money with a healthy dose of skepticism, and bookmark in their browser the official site of their countrys tax service to help avoid getting hooked by phishers, said Nadezhda Demidova, Lead Web Content Analyst at Kaspersky Lab.
Kaspersky Lab advice for staying safe:
- Always check the web address when asked to input details make sure it is the legitimate one and starts with https, when any personal or financial information is asked for.
- Phishers exploit fear and hope. Signs that there could be phishers at work include messages that are unduly threatening (warning of a potential fine or other penalty, for example), those that demand immediate action, which ask for vast amounts of very personal and seemingly irrelevant information, or which simply sound too good to be true.
- Dont click on links in emails from people you dont know, or in message you werent expecting.
- If in doubt, check with your tax authority.

Holmes Lake Snowshoe
Hello All,
Today, I took my two best friends and went snowshoeing out to Holmes Lake. Not an epic outdoor adventure, but a satisfying outing, nonetheless. I had to park out by the road so it made the trip a little long. I didn't mind.:-) I didn't see or hear any snowmobiles. We had the whole area to ourselves, with the exception of one nice gentleman who was out exploring on X-country skis.
We stopped at the lean-to for lunch. I was dismayed at all the trash. There was even a tent/stakes/poles and an air mattress all balled up and thrown in a corner. Fortunately, I had taken a page from Justin's book, and had brought a big garbage bag just in case I found a mess like this. I couldn't possibly get it all by myself, so I left the tent and few other things that looked usable, and packed out all the other garbage.
After cleaning up, I fired up my new jetboil and made a nice bowl of soup. How wonderful it was to enjoy steaming hot soup while watching the dogs explore the area around the lean-to. Afterward, we made our way down to the lake. Most of it was still frozen but it was open where it drained into a creek. I chose not to go out onto that ice, so after a few minutes we headed home. Anther fabulous day courtesy of Mother Nature. :)
Here is a link to my facebook photo album of the trip.

Moose population dropping?
Latest estimate for ADK moose is about 400. This is down significantly from previous estimates of around 1,000. Too bad - but the habitat may not be the best with older growth forest on state lands.

More Flies - Stillwater, that is
So I've been pretty much of a laggard on the forum this winter. It's a case of so much to do, so little time.
I have had time at the vise. I'm capitalizing heavily from what I learned from Phil Rowley at his hosted trip to Manitoba last Fall. We had great success fishing balanced flies under an indicator so I'm going to try that here. And then there are plenty of variations on themes that do work here.
So will a record brookie take a bite out of one of these this Spring or will he die laughing?

Canoe and kayak for sale
Old Town Camper 15ft Royalex I think 1986, $625 I believe I have a plastic paddle for it.
Wilderness Systems Tzunami 14ft Poly $525. I need to recork the stern bulkhead behind the seat but if you want to do it then I'll lower the price to $500 I purchased the boat up in the ADK for $700 in 2016, no rudder.
I gave the Camper to my daughter and her fiance which they used only a few times in Syracuse and ADK very happily. I have this posted on Craigs on Long Island.
Then he saw my solo boats and yearned for one so we helped purchase a used kayak which is mentioned above.
Sad to say that he was taken away to quickly in life and I need to sell both of them.
Please pm me for pics that I can send via email.
I'm located app 30 miles east of NYC on Long Island.
I can meet part way if that helps. Thanks David

Kni- co Trekker for sale
Hi folks, guessing I should have posted this a few months ago but here goes
For sale a wood burning stove, Kni Co Trekker used. One year old, used slightly, comes with a side table to attach. The stove pipes go straight up, no angle piece. It was used for a makeshift hot tent and an angle piece wasn't needed. You can purchase one of those from Ace hardware for app $6 I was told. This was purchased by my daughter's fiance last winter after I took him on bio and greenfrogs trip. Great guy and taken away to soon in life.
I'm offering it for $125. I live east of NYC in case someone is near here. I could bring it up on a future trip somewhere. Shipping costs app $25 if you need to do it that way. You can google the size and weight on the knico website for specs and weight. PM me for pics, not to sure about posting here, resizing problems with pics. Thanks David
Side note, I'm also selling an OT Camper 15ft Royalex that I gave to them and a Wilderness Systems Tzunami 14ft Poly. Been putting it off for a while but need to go on with life. Thanks

Nippletop & Dial Feb 17
Drove up to ADK Loj on Friday evening Feb 16th, enjoyed a pleasant night in a lean to with hammocks hung. Brisk temps in the low teens. Heart Lake a welcome but noisy bed fellow with its ice grumbling.
Up prior to dawn, much to the chagrin of a dog in the next site that woke up to challenge us. Bit of a racket but once we were introduced all was well.
At AMR prior to 7am. Lot filling up. Temp in teens F. The weather was really what I wanted - cold enough so that nothing on trail would be wet. Trails were well packed. So we carried snowshoes but did entire loop in micro-spikes.
Bluejay day for the morning and great views from Nippletop and Dial. Initially trails were well traveled but after maybe 2pm we say no one else.
We took our time - I am a very slow uphill hiker. So finished up the HG Leach trail in the dark with headlamps (expected). Dusk on Noonmark's shoulder with a front moving in was awe inspiring.
Back to Loj for a hot meal and another pleasant night in hammocks under stars.
We have been out late fall and early spring, and a January Day hike but this would be our first high winter peak and I think it went well.
Things we did well:
Things we will do different next time:

We have been out late fall and early spring, and a January Day hike but this would be our first high winter peak and I think it went well.
Things we did well:
- water lasted whole trip, no need to melt.
- I can't say enough about 'primaloft' as an insulation. It really breathes well.
- New Motorola Android phone with AlpineQuest app was a treat.
- Used our EMS packs as day packs and this helped manage the extra stuff one brings along for winter hikes really well.
Things we will do different next time:
- We had good intentions of packing day packs prior to trip. Doing it at trail head is a bit rushed. Did not leave anything out but wasted some time.
- Way to obsessed with time. Need more pauses along the way.
- Should have heeded others advice to boil water to keep a warm water supply on trail. Our cold water was freezing along the way. Drinking ice water in cold weather resulted in some nasty muscle cramps. We had a stove with us but did not wish to slow down. Advil resolved cramps.
- I started with one to many layers. By the time I shed the extra layer my base layer was a bit damp and had to dry out some. Have to remember to always start out hiking colder than comfortable.
- We had microspikes, crampons and snowshoes. Need to get longer spikes and ditch the crampons I think.
Thanks to one and all for the advise and tips from this forum.
Advice on trail camera
Hi all! I am new to hunting and trapping and would like to buy a trail camera for scouting. Being brand new to this activity tho, I have no clue which game cameras I should be looking at, and which to just completely avoid. What brands are good? Which brands are no good? Id like something with good expandable memory through an sd card. Good quality pictures are a must. But at the same time cost is important to me. Being my first trail cam, I dont want to spend an arm and a leg. Also are all trail cams waterproof, that is definitely an important feature Im looking for.
Thanks yall

Dont Forget the Digital Prenup: Relationship Break-Ups Put Personal Privacy at Risk
Dont Forget the Digital Prenup: Relationship Break-Ups Put Personal Privacy at Risk
With online accounts and connected devices playing an ever-growing role in our daily lives, it has become harder than ever for people in relationships to define the boundaries of personal privacy. But what happens if they break up?
According to global research from Kaspersky Lab and Toluna, 21% of people have spied on their ex-partner via an online account that they had access to but, with revenge also a key motivator for scorned lovers, this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the privacy risks that accompany modern-day partners after a break-up.
Privacy is becoming an increasingly fluid concept in a world of digital borders, and relationships are no exception. For example, 70% of couples share passwords, PINs or fingerprints to access their personal devices, and 26% store some type of intimate data on their partners device: such as intimate messages from/to the partner (14%), intimate photos of themselves (12%) and intimate videos of them and their partner (11%).
In addition, people keep sensitive data in accounts and devices they share with their partner for example, financial information (11%) or work-related data (11%).
This is all well and good when the relationship is healthy and the data is in trusted hands, but some clear issues emerge in the event of a break-up. If things start to collapse, sharing intimate memories on devices or online accounts goes from being a perfectly natural part of a loving relationship, to a potential privacy nightmare.
Of those who have experienced a break-up, 12% have shared or wanted to share their ex-partners private information publicly as an act of revenge, 12% have damaged or wanted to damage their exs device and 21% have spied on their former partner via accounts they had access to. Theres also a potential financial impact, with one in ten (10%) people admitting to having spent their ex-partners money online.
Interestingly, there are some noticeable differences between the sexes, as men are much more likely than women to share their ex-partners private information publicly as a form of revenge (17% vs. 7%) and use their exs information for their own benefit (17% vs. 8%).
In comparison, women are much more willing than men to take the high road by deleting all their ex-partners information from their device (55% vs. 49%) and deleting all partner photos or videos following a break-up (56% vs. 48%).
Women, however, are also prone to some sneaky tactics, with 33% admitting to spying on their ex-partner via social networks compared to 28% of men.
The digital world offers a great way for couples to connect, but also presents significant privacy risks if partners decide to go their separate ways, said Andrei Mochola, Head of Consumer Business at Kaspersky Lab.
With a sizeable proportion of individuals seemingly willing to abuse the intimate data they have on their ex-partners, individuals should always make sure they are careful when sharing anything intimate and know exactly where it is being stored. Moreover, theres always the option of a digital prenuptial agreement to determine the custody of data before it becomes a privacy problem.
But a break-up doesnt have to put your privacy at risk. People should always be sure to change passwords to accounts that their ex-partner has access to, using the Kaspersky Password Manager to help generate strong passwords and store them securely.
Furthermore, Kaspersky Total Security features a File Shredder feature which permanently deletes files that you dont want anyone else to see, while intimate messages on your Android device can be hidden using the Privacy Protection feature.

Lost: Black Diamond Hiking Pole
Hey all,
I lost my hiking pole on the Blueberry Hill Trails near Elizabethtown today. I believe it may be leaning up against a tree at the Ward Hill overlook. I sure would like to be reunited with it. If anyone comes across it please PM me. Thanks!

Bored at the vice
With the slight fear of being tarred and feathered, I have to honestly say...I am SICK of tying trout flies..one more size 20 micro wonder fuzz bug and I'm going on a week long whiskey binge.
So for the sake of my sanity (and my dogs)...Lets see some flies that'll entice a essox or two.

Murphy Lake Lean-To 17Feb2018
My wife and I continue our exploration of the Southern ADK with Murphy/Middle/Bennett lakes from Creek Rd. The trail is probably the most marked I have ever seen, seemed like there was a marker every 50 Ft. I was disappointed to find the Lean-To in a less than desirable status. I understand why people use tarps in cold weather (even tho they aren't supposed to) but to leave everything behind makes me a bit aggravated. We cleaned up as best we could and packed out (2) of the tarps along with a grocery bag of garbage but just didn't have enough room for it all. We'll be back to hike it from Pumpkin Hollow next month and will pack out the remaining tarps if they are still there. I think Murphy Lake or Middle Lake will be a great place to overnight and have added it to my list for spring/summer.

Pharaoh Lake Ice Conditions
Hi yall - posting here because DEC rangers don't seem to want to pick up their phones or return calls. I'm heading up to Pharaoh Lake tomorrow for a two nighter. Went out last year in January and had a great time, so this year I decided to bring my brother along for his first snow camping experience.
I know there have been a lot of warm days recently (and it'll be relatively warm while we're there too) and I'm a little worried the ice might be compromised. I'm realize I'm probably being overly cautious here, but I'm from MD and I don't have a lot of lake ice experience. I know the usual caveats about being cautious at the margins and avoiding inlets and outlets, but overall, the ice should still be good, right?
This warm spell really is a bummer. I was a little under equipped for last year (lows of 5 and highs of 20) so I geared up proper for this year (new bag, pad, jacket, fleece)... only to see the forecast of lows around 20 and highs around 40....

Pond help in the Long Lake area
I seem to recall a post somewhere in here about a fishing for Brookies in a pond off a lake that was canoe/kayak only. No motors. I think it was in the Long Lake Tupper area. Am I imagining something or is there a pond/small lake similar to what Im describing?

Trade/swap seats from Old Town Guide/Discovery 158
Hi all-
New to the forum.
Anybody have an Old Town and want to trade canoe seats? I have plastic and would like either cane or nylon.
Here's the background:
I have an Old Town "Guide" 158 that I bought at Dick's Sporting goods a few years back. I realized after poking around on Old Town's website that the canoe I have is actually the "Discovery" 158, just renamed for Dick's Sporting Goods (I called Old Town for that info).
Anyway, one of the differences between them is the seats. I have the plastic molded seats with the backrest. I'd rather have the wood with cane or nylon webbing. They're available for purchase on the website, but I just thought I'd post here to see if anyone would like to trade. I hate to buy new seats and just let the plastic ones collect dust and end up in a landfill someday.
Thanks!

Interesting! Just found that most Malaysians actually not interested in iPhone's features
Just like any year, iPhone users will usually go crazy when the product was launched. But one eCommerce actually took time to research to see if Malaysians were even interested with the 'crazily-priced' iPhone X.
Haha true or not? Whatever it is i bought myself a OnePlus 3. Still loving my Android. What do you think? haha

Help with tresspessing
Tredhed and I went up to the family cabin today to do a little light shoveling on the roof. When we got there, we immediately noticed that some individual had driven their vehicle through the three feet of snow on our front lawn, stopping only when they hit the rock wall around the well head (where the bird feeder hook is in the photo).
There appeared to be snowmobile tracks near the back of the disturbed area, indicating that they had either loaded or unloaded their machine in our front lawn. While certainly not the best lawn in the neighborhood, I'm a little disturbed by someone driving across our lawn because it was convenient for them to load their sled and turn their truck around. We go through this every winter and even in the summer some people decide it's OK to turn their boat trailer around in our front yard.
I certainly don't want to slam all snowmobile riders. 99% are awesome people who enjoy the sport and respect others. However, I'd like to ask members of the forum what we can do to deter this behavior on our property (preferably something that doesn't violate the National Firearms Act of 1934). We put up a span of caution tape and thought of large rocks, game cams, and asking for more ranger/police patrols.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks folks

Getting closer to 100 peaks.
This peak progress map, made by Kyler, shows a lot of yet-to-be-climbed peaks in the South-Central Adirondacks.
Nevertheless 65/100 are behind me as I advance through this challenge.
Last weekend, like most of them, was harder than anticipated.
Blog post for last weekend.

Topping off water bottle with snow
Looking at Nippletop => Dial. Long day of hiking. Was going over my water options and thought instead of carrying four liters I could carry 2 and simply scoop some snow into nalgene after each water stop. And carry fuel. I have a steripen so can purify. I was just picturing the usual resupply spots (Gill Brook) and picture thin ice over swift water. Would welcome any thoughts.
I have read the atmospheric pollution thread as well as some great ones on winter thru hikes of NLPT.

Adirondack Winter Backpacking (Episode 10): Skunked! Part 3
Maple Sap 2018
OK gang, I started this last year and will again. With some free time on this beautiful Adirondack afternoon and a few days of 40's in the forecast for the Lake George area, I couldn't resist strapping on the snowshoes and setting out my ten little taps. One tree started dripping like a leaky faucet and a few others looked ready to go. If it runs this week, I'll boil over the weekend. I know some of you have some real serious operations compared to mine and we had some good discussion last year. If the long-range forecast holds, we could have a good run in this area the rest of February. Good luck everyone!

Emerald Forest/Scouten Brook Loop
https://endlessmountains.wordpress.c...k-loop-sgl-57/
This is one of the most scenic loops in PA, located in SGL 57. About 7-8 miles long, it features a gorge, cascades, waterfalls, a vista, and a series of massive boulders and chasms. The highlight is the Emerald Forest, covering several hundred acres it is comprised of spruce and hemlock, with some pine, and carpets of moss. It is deep and green all year and is surely one of the most scenic forests in the state.

Cod Pond in the Wilcox WF broken out
There's a solid 3' of snow in the woods along Rte 8. I skied the trail to Stewart's Bridge and then to Cod Pond, but didn't complete the loop. I was breaking 12" of packing snow from Wednesday's storm all the way. No crust on the snow, just great wettish powder, deep. Fischer Outtabounds skis, 88/68/78, Bring your longest ski poles!

Hemlocks are one of the most important tree species in New York forests, but here in New York our hemlocks are threatened by an invasive forest pest, the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid. HWA reached New York in the 1980s and continues to spread today, infesting new areas each year.Hemlock Woolly Adelgid
In this talk, Charlotte will cover the importance of hemlock trees in northeastern forests, the threat presented by HWA, and what you can do to identify and manage HWA infestations in your neck of the woods. She will also give an introduction to the New York State Hemlock Initiative's research into biological control opportunities and the role of NYSHI in promoting hemlock conservation throughout the state.
There will also be a short field experience where participants will look at hemlocks and some of the common things that might be confused for HWA.
Charlotte Malmborg is a natural resources technician with the New York State Hemlock Initiative at Cornell University, where she lends her voice to improving science literacy regarding hemlock conservation efforts in the face of the hemlock woolly adelgid, an invasive forest pest. In addition to lecturing around the state, she also works with the field team to aid in NYSHI's research efforts. Previously Charlotte worked as a conservation corps member, a horticulturist, and a coordinator for environmental stewardship projects at a land trust, before joining NYSHI in July 2017.

Cranberry 50 campsites
Hello everyone. I'm planning on hiking the cranberry lake 50 this year and was hoping to get some recommendations on where to see up camp each night. I'm hoping to get enough time off work to be able to take my time and enjoy it. Any tips would be appreciated.

Got out the old XC skis
This isn't necessarily ADK related but I am in no other forums that involve skiing... So every once in a blue moon I get out my old skis, no idea how old probably 70's? Folks bought them used for us kids in the 80's. Well since my brother moved to Florida I ended up with both our skis and his are newer but the boots are now shot so I moved back over to my old pair this winter. My boots are shot too but holding together for now. The old vinyl is all cracked and dry rotting.
The skis are waxless, but the bases are looking pretty beat up with small gouges and chunks here and there. Can a waxless ski be waxed or some other method to smooth out the bases again? I don't know if I am giving up a lot of efficiency with the beat up bases.
Also do they still make 3 pin boots? And in wide? My current boots are a full 2 sizes too big just to try and get my toes into the wider part of the shoe and still they are crunched. Due to wide toe spread on narrow feet I usually resort to barefoot in almost all things outdoors, but not really an option on skis lol! So I am all ears if there is a wide toe box option out there somewhere!

New Years at Worlds End State Park
https://endlessmountains.wordpress.c...nd-state-park/
This past New Years we reserved a cabin at Worlds End. The frigid temps did not put a damper on our hiking as we explored the beautiful park in the bright sunshine and deep blue skies. We checked out some covered bridges, and saw Canyon Vista at sunrise, which was gorgeous. The ice flows at High Rock and the views from High Knob were excellent. Worlds End is such a beautiful park. There was a journal at our cabin and people have visited from across the country. If you're looking to do something different over New Years, or any time of the year, I highly recommend the cabins at Worlds End.
