Road name info sought

Above Franklin Falls there is a dead end road that has had 3 names [3 I know of].
Fyreena, McManus and Brewster.
I'm not sure which it is presently named but in the 1980s it was Brewster...and had been McManus but it may again be McManus.
It begins where Fletcher Farm Rd. meets Cold Brook Rd.

Anyone know which name came first and when?
Any other info would also be appreciated.

Street & Nye or Colden

So the weekend of 1/9 looks to be favorable. Trailhead temps below freezing but above 5F. Our kind of weather. Does anyone have recent experience with the Lake Arnold Trail or Street & Nye. With the warm weather I am concerned they are not yet frozen over.

Explosion in the sky

Apparently there was a large explosion in the sky last night accompanied by a flash of green light in northern Saratoga County. Did anyone hear it? I didn't and neither did any of my friends who live up that way.

Sounds like it might have been a meteor. Just wondering if anyone's seen anything like this while camping in the park. The closest thing I've seen is a large fireball over the Gulf of Mexico when I used to dive. It was quite a sight but there wasn't any sound.

Taylor Pond history/info

Anyone know of any old history of Taylor Pond in Black Brook/Clinton County and any families who lived there?
And when did the state take control of it?
Do any old topos show buildings/homes on it?
When was it dammed?

Hello from a newbie to the site !

But by no means a newbie to the ADKs . I've owned 45 acres in the park nearby Stratford and Pleasant Lake for 14 years now . We get up there maybe 10-15 times a year from way down south in Md .

What got us here ? My son played baseball in Cooperstown for many years . We met up with a realtor one evening and here we are .

What kept us there ? Being in the middle of the lakes , mountains and forests . Camping , daytrips , fishing , 4 wheeling and dirt bike riding , shooting the guns ( no hunting ) campfires , local beers and just plain old relaxing .

We hope to retire to our land within the next few years . I've met many friends down in Little Falls , Dolgeville etc which we keep in touch with .

I found this site while visiting YouTube and was watching the Piseco / Powley Rd camping vids . Funny seeing your neighbors places on the computer from 368 miles away .

West Canada Creek In Shambles

I usually make it out to the year round catch-and-release trophy section of the West Canada a few times each winter, and gave it a try today--my first time since the Halloween storm that devastated so many homes a bit downstream. Suffice it say that that stretch is an absolute wreck! Case in point--there's a particularly hard to access spot I've always enjoyed drudging to with probably a 100 ft. long "island" with numerous trees--well that whole island is gone!! The starting point at Trenton Falls has been completely transformed as well. I'm no fish biologist, but with such an upheaval of every square inch of the creek bed, its hard to imagine much spawning success from last fall, let alone the survival of very many fish from such a torrent. I'm not sure if the DEC has any plans to help that stretch recover, but I hope they come up with something.

Short walk in the woods, WLWF, 26 Dec, 2019

I had the rare chance today to spend some time up at the Hamilton County Mosquito Preserve with my youngest daughter and my two brothers. After checking the cabin out and having a warm cup of soup and some hot chocolate for lunch, we hit one of the local trails for a little jaunt into the Wilcox Lake Wild Forest

After signing into the woods...



My daughter led the way for her Dad and uncles to follow.



I picked a short hike up the trail to a swampy area near a local lake. It wasn't that far of a walk as we couldn't spend too much time in the woods. The snow conditions were very easy to bare boot as there was very little snow.



Micro Spikes would have been useful in some spots, but snowshoes would have been overkill. Don't even think about skiing here yet.



Soon enough, we reached the marshy area. It was partially frozen and reminded us that even though we had some cold weather, things haven't fully locked up yet in southern Hamilton County.



After saying hi to the local chickadee population, we backtracked out of the woods and headed down the hill to the land of Wifi and cell service :(

Still, time spend with family in the woods is time well spent.

I'm interested in the present snow depth in the Saranac Lake and Wilmington Regions???...but please use this thread for other places to if you care to ask.

follensby clear pond area changes

After googling around for 30 minutes, I figured I would just come here and ask my question, since I'm sure someone has an answer. Why is it so hard to find a new campsite map for the follensby clear pond area? I read there were a lot of changes made, but I'm having a heck of a time trying to find of map of what the changes ended up being. I thought they closed half the campsites and moved (or removed?) the lean-to but I can't find anything current using google. I was trying to determine two things: Where the new campsites were and whether you could winter camp there (with potential for ice fishing). I can find a contour map, which doesn't really help. Thanks!

Porter traverse from Marcy airfield 12/20

The approach to Porter Mt. on the Ridge Trail from the East is not very popular compared to coming up on the Cascade trail. It is much longer, steeper, and has significantly more elevation gain. However, it does provide nice viewpoints from Blueberry Mt.

I had planned an out and back to Porter. When I got to the ample parking at Marcy field, there were no other cars and only 2-3'' of snow. Still, I put on my snowshoes, knowing the snow would deepen quickly, which it did.

After 1/2 I realized I was off-track. And that would be the theme of the day, since I was breaking trail the whole way and the snow covered any tracks that might have existed. It was tiresome, both physically, but also mentally as I peered through my frosted glasses to try to find which two spruce trees had a path between them and often guessing incorrectly.

But I finally got to the summit Blueberry Mt in 2.25 hours, which pretty much according to plan.

The next mile to the Porter ridge was tough. The snow was now over 12'' deep, but much more than that in some places (2-3'). There was no ice nor any cliffs to climb, so it was not a technical hike by any means, but finding an d making the path was taking its toll. I was hardly moving, but I told myself that once I got on the ridge, things would become easier.

However, the ridge is essentially wooden. The snow was deeper and the trail markers became almost non-existent. I realized a change of plans would be required. I could either turn around and keep Porter for another day or do the traverse and come down the Cascade trail and bum a ride from other hikers or call a cab.

I chose the latter option. Knowing I did not have to go back through my half-assedly broken trail, I gained renewed motivation and got to the summit of Porter.

As soon as I left the summit, the trail became a well-established highway. Snowshoes were not even required. There were several patches of ice however.

I met 5-6 hikers that were coming up, but none coming down. When I got to the trailhead, I turned on my phone and spent the next 20 minutes trying to find a taxi company. All the phone numbers I found were either disconnected or were for a company that did not service the area. No hikers had come back to parking area (and there were only 3 cars there). So for the 1st time in my life, I resorted to hitchhiking. Thankfully, a nice resident of Keene Valley stopped and brought me directly to my car, while we exchanged hiking-related stories. What a nice way to end this outing!

Recently, i bought D-Link DIR-868L router during Shoppee 11.11 sale for a good price.

I would like share my experience in migrating the router to DD-WRT firmware and Tomato firmware.

Also, I am able to go back to D-Link firmware after i tested DD-WRT and Tomato firmwares.

Flashing other than factory firmware into routers is not an easy thing.

You need patience and clear mind, so that you can see what went wrong and take necessary steps to overcome the problems.

The sky-rise of droppers: phishing and malware attacks surface amid premiere of famous space-saga

Popular films are often used by cybercriminals as bait to distribute malware, and the latest movie saga from ‘a galaxy far, far away’ is no exception. This year, the latest, and last film, of the sequel’s trilogy, has drawn the attention of attackers even before the premiere, with fraudulent websites and malicious files of the yet-to-be-released film flooding the web.

Films are one of the main forms of entertainment users seek to access for free, which creates fertile soil for cyberattacks. Online streaming, torrents and other methods of digital distribution often infringe upon content copyright, and yet they still remain popular as a source of free content. Torrent-trackers and illegal streaming platforms pose a threat to users’ cyber-safety as they can host malicious files, masked behind the name of movie recordings and files. Given this tendency, Kaspersky studied how the world-famous sci-fi franchise’s name is being abused by cybercriminals in order to fool fans of the Rebel Alliance.

Public attention on ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’, which is to premiere on 19 December, is already attracting cybercriminals. Kaspersky researchers found over 30 fraudulent websites and social media profiles disguised as official movie accounts (the actual number of these sites may be much higher) that supposedly distribute free copies of the latest film in the franchise. These websites collect unwary users’ credit card data, under the pretense of necessary registration on the portal.

The domains of websites used for gathering personal data and spreading malicious files usually copy the official name of the film and provide thorough descriptions and supporting content, thereby fooling users into believing that the website is in some way connected to the official film. Such practice is called ‘black SEO’, which enables criminals to promote phishing websites high up in search engine results (such results often show up for search terms such as ‘name-of-the-film watch free’).

To further support the promotion of fraudulent websites, cybercriminals also set up Twitter and other social media accounts, where they distribute links to the content. Coupled with malicious files shared on torrents, this brings the criminals results. So far, 83 users have already been affected by 65 malicious files disguised as copies of the upcoming movie.

Phishing is not the only way in which cybercriminals tend to utilize popular film franchises. Just as with popular TV shows, they often disguise malicious programs as yet another episode of the story. In 2019, Kaspersky detected 285,103 attempts to infect 37,772 users seeking to watch movies of the renowned space-opera series, signifying a 10% rise compared to last year. The number of unique files used to target the users amounted to 11,499 - a 30% drop on last year. The data shows that even years after the film’s premiere, a significant number of users will still seek to download malicious files in the hope of watching the famous space adventures for free.

“It is typical for fraudsters and cybercriminals to try to capitalize on popular topics, and ‘Star Wars’ is a good example of such a theme this month. As attackers manage to push malicious websites and content up in the search results, fans need to remain cautious at all times. We advise users to not fall for such scams and instead enjoy the end of the saga on the big screen’ – said Tatiana Sidorina, security researcher at Kaspersky.

To avoid falling victim to malicious programs pretending to be popular films or TV shows, Kaspersky recommends taking the following steps:

• Pay attention to the official movie release dates in theaters, on streaming services, TV, DVD, or other sources
• Don’t click on suspicious links, such as those promising an early view of a new film; check movie release dates in the cinema and keep track of them
• Look at the downloaded file extension. Even if you are going to download a video file from a source you consider trusted and legitimate, the file should have an .avi, .mkv or .mp4 extension among other video formats, definitely not .exe
• Check the website’s authenticity. Do not visit websites allowing you to watch a movie until you are sure that they are legitimate and start with ‘https’. Confirm that the website is genuine, by double-checking the format of the URL or the spelling of the company name, reading reviews about it and checking the domains’ registation data before starting downloads
• Use a reliable security solution, such as Kaspersky Security Cloud, for comprehensive protection from a wide range of threats

Lower Saranac Lake Boating

Ive been going to lower saranac lake for years and have seen many different styles of boats. Ive taken a 16 ft jon boat and 20 ft bowrider and never had an issue. I just purchased a 24 ft Grady White center console with twin outboards.

Since the last time I did this, I've visited (and camped in) a bunch of new lean-tos on my quest to stay in every single lean-to and backcountry shelter in New York State. I decided that enough time had passed that it was time to post a collection of lean-to photos yet again. I also went back and re-edited some of my older photos so that they were more clear and easy to see.

The 273 lean-tos (and other shelters) depicted in these photos represent approximately 68% of the roughly 400 lean-tos and shelters that exist across the state that are available for free overnight use by the public during at least part of the year.

Note that all of the lean-tos shown still do exist in some capacity, some have been relocated/replaced since the photo depicting them was taken.

Kings Flow Winter Camp?

A couple friends and I are planning our annual winter ADK trip, and Kings Flow in the SPW came up as a potential spot.

We do a typical 3 day, 2 night trip on which we try to incorporate some ice fishing. Would like to try to pull a sled if possible to bring some gear.

Are there decent spots to set up camp along the Flow? I don't see any listed on DEC website. How heavily used is this area? Any other advice for possibilities on this area would be great, thanks!

Hi, sorry for the noob question but I just took up snowshoeing a few years ago. The back strap one of my shoes does not tighten anymore. Do you know if that can be fixed? Can it be easily replaced (how?)? Or do I have to buy a new shoe? Thx.

46 attempt in a week (or less)

Beginning to research routes, kind of a crazy idea I came up with over the summer. I was made aware of the fkt for the 46 while I was training for a 100 mile race last spring, I know I have a 0% chance of coming close in 3 days, but the 46 has always been a bucket list item. So I decided to give myself a week to complete them all. I’ve done 14 high peaks, some I’ve ran more recently and i had hiked a few when I was younger.

I guess I’m just trying to gather as much information as I can right now. I will be shooting for a late July/early August timeframe. Have an idea of how I’m going to do this, my major issue are the bushwhacks, I plan on covering a lot of ground in the darkness. Is there anyone that has attempted this recently or in the past?

Northrup Lake

Hey everyone I'm new to the forum.

I was just wondering if anyone had any information on Northrop Lake, South East of Brooktrout Lake back in the West Canada area. I'm thinking about going back and trout fishing sometime next year but there's no trail getting back to it. I was just wondering if anybody's ever been back there, fished it, or knows of an unmarked trail that I could grab by Brooktrout to get back to it. Thanks so much for letting me know either way.

Cod Pond, WLWF, 5 Dec, 2019

During the big snowstorm earlier this week, we got over 2' of snow here in the Workers Paradise. It seemed odd to head north to find easier snowshoeing conditions.:confused: Be that as it may, Tredhed and I took our annual snowshoe shakedown hike to Cod Pond in the Wilcox Lake Wild Forest. Due to a hectic, pre-holiday schedule, we took the opportunity to hit the woods today and we're glad we did. After some minor maintenance at the Hamilton County Mosquito Preserve, we hit the trailhead around 10:30 this morning.



We were shocked to see six other cars in the parking lot!:eek: For crying out loud, this is Cod Pond, not The Garden! As we were getting ready, Danielle from DEC came out of the woods and told us there were 8 folks from the Adirondack Mountain Club hiking into Cod Pond. I asked Danielle what she was doing there and she mentioned that she was checking a live trap trap line to radio collar a female fisher in order to do a breeding study. The ESF Wildlife Biology dude deep inside of me smiled :) as we nerded out on fisher stories for a few minutes.

Bidding Danielle farewell, Tredhed and I headed up the red disked trail. The woods were a little skinny for skiing, but soon enough, I suspect.



As Tredhed signed into the woods, we noticed the 8 ADK folks were signed in and headed to the same destination as us.



Prepared for a potential traffic jam, we headed up the yellow disked trail to Cod Pond.



The trail was in pretty good shape and the scant 6" of snow were well packed down from the crew just ahead of us.



A few minutes before reaching the pond, we caught sight of the Adirondack Mountain Club folks approaching. We found a wide spot in the trail to pull over and let them pass. We exchanged pleasantries and they seemed like a great group of folks enjoying a Thursday morning in the woods.

A few minutes later, we approached the pond during a nice little snow squall. The snow obscured the view of Harrington Mt., but added some atmosphere to the already scenic destination.

Not wanting to test the ice this morning, we stayed near the designated campsite at the end of the trail.



After a few hero pictures and some hot cocoa, we hoofed it back down the trail to the Rt. 8 parking area.



The sun started to shine a little as we made it back to the now empty parking lot. The view of Shanty Cliffs was superb, as it always is. A little too cold to wade the creek and explore the ledges today, but soon enough...



We only spent about an hour and a half in the woods today, but it was a good equipment shakedown to prepare us for the rest of the season. I don't know about Tredhed, but I can't wait to get out and explore some more this winter.

Ransomware now targeting back-up data, IT Threat Evolution Report Q3 2019 shows

Kaspersky researchers have identified a new type of ransomware attack which is actively growing in popularity. Targeting Network Attached Storage (NAS), it poses new risks for back-up data usually stored on such devices. With NAS largely perceived as a secure technology, users often remain unprepared for the possibility of infection, putting their data at higher risk.

Encryption ransomware is a malware that applies advanced encryption methods so files cannot be decrypted without a unique key. This leaves the infected device owner stuck with a locked device and a demand to pay a ransom in order to regain access to files. While users are typically infected with ransomware via email or exploit-kits planted on websites, the new type of attacks on NAS devices use a different vector. Ransomware operators scan ranges of IP addresses looking for NAS devices accessible via the web. Although only web interfaces protected with authentication are accessible, a number of devices have integrated software with vulnerabilities in it. This allows the attackers to install a Trojan using exploits, which will then encrypt all data on the devices connected to the NAS.

“Previously encryption ransomware targeting NAS was hardly evident in the wild, and this year alone we have already detected a number of new ransomware families focused solely on NAS. This trend is unlikely to fade, as this attack vector proves to be very profitable for the attackers, especially due to the users being completely unprepared for them as they consider this technology highly reliable. NAS devices are usually purchased as complete and secure products, which as it turns out is not the case. Consumers and especially business users need to therefore remain cautious when protecting their data”, said Fedor Sinitsyn, security researcher at Kaspersky.

During Q3 2019, Kaspersky products detected and repelled encryption ransomware attacks on 229,643 Kaspersky products users, which is 11% less than during the same period last year. Although the total number of affected users slightly decreased, the report shows that the number of new encryption ransomware modifications grew from 5,195 in Q3 2018 to 13,138 in Q3 2019 marking 153% growth. This development signals cybercriminal interest in this type of malware as means of enrichment.

For Malaysia, the percentage of users infected with ransomware has decreased in Q3 2019 of 0.63% , versus 0.92% in Q3 2018. Malaysia also dropped in world ranking of ransomware detections, from 83rd in 2018 to 117th.

At the same time, the infamous WannaCry Trojan family retained first place among the most popular Trojans with over a fifth of attacked users having been targeted with malware identified as belonging to this group. The top three most popular verdicts that account for almost half of users attacked by cryptors were Trojan-Ransom.Win32.Wanna (20.96% users attacked), Trojan-Ransom.Win32.Phny (20.01%) and Trojan-Ransom.Win32.GandCrypt (8.58%).

Other report findings include:
• Kaspersky detected and repelled 989,432,403 malicious attacks from online resources located in around 200 countries and territories around the world (4% growth compared to Q3 2018)
• Attempted malware infections that aim to steal money via online access to bank accounts were registered on 197,559 user computers (35% decline compared to Q3 2018)
• Kaspersky’s antivirus file detected a total of 230,051,054 unique malicious and potentially unwanted objects (4% decrease compared to Q3 2018)
• Kaspersky mobile security products also detected 870,617 malicious installation packages (33% decrease compared to Q3 2018)
To reduce the risk of infection by encryptors, Kaspersky advises consumers and businesses to:
• Always update your operating system to eliminate recent vulnerabilities and use a robust security solution with updated databases

• Use a security solution that has specialized technologies to protect your data from ransomware such as Kaspersky Endpoint Security for Business and Kaspersky Security Cloud for consumers. Corporate grade endpoint security suites also have patch management and exploit prevention capabilities that would be helpful against these threats
• Always have fresh back-up copies of your files so you can replace them in case they are lost (e.g. due to malware or a broken device) and store them not only on the physical object but also in cloud storage for greater reliability
• Remember that ransomware is a criminal offence. You shouldn’t pay. If you become a victim, report it to your local law enforcement agency. Try to find a decryptor on the internet first – some of them are available for free here: https://noransom.kaspersky.com
• Businesses can enhance their preferred third-party security solution with free Kaspersky Anti-Ransomware Tool

• To strengthen protection of NAS in corporate environments, implement specialized security solutions such as Kaspersky Security for Storage. Its finally here. I have found some smaller shallower ponds, 15' and less, have about 6 inches of ice. Anything deeper like colby and surrounding waters have JUST locked up. Still wet spots with maybe an inch of ice. I will try and keep everyone up to date on current ice conditions.

Hello guys, I am interested in taking my 11 year old son up in early May 2020 before black fly season. I have done the Npt twice and am a 46er #9946 , so I am not new to this. The reason I'm reaching out is he will only have the weekend off from school and I wanted to see if anyone had any good itenery's for me. As of now I am thinking of parking at Pillsbury mt and hiking to Pillsbury lake. Day to west Canada lakes. Day three ceder lakes and day four out. The only problem with this is it would be four days. Just wanted to get some ideas.

This is a bit from a recent trip at Moose Pond in the Adirondacks. Coldest temp got down to -5F. When I say it is 5F degrees, it was actually -5F. I think my brain got a little frozen on this trip! I stayed pretty warm in my WB Blackbird Hammock.

Allen this weekend? river crossings

Thinking of trying Allen this upcoming weekend 12/6 or 7.

I've never done it in summer or winter. Interested in a remote, short but steep hike w/ my buddy, and seems like Allen could be it.

What are you thoughts on the river crossings?
