Had a good day today stillwater fly fishing. Surface temp low 50's. Got a pretty big rainbow on a leech pattern. The fish fought nicely. Not sure how big as I left it in the water to not overstress it. I would guess 16-18 inches.
The best part was there was a big midge hatch during the mid morning. This happened right above a coontail weed bed. I was lucky to see then emerging and learned a lot. They rise to the surface very slowly and a lot of them end up stillborn. Going to tie up some this week including the stillborn version. The closest thing I had in my fly box was a small cream colored grub pattern that I managed to get some strikes on. Can't wait to try again.
