Overweighting Your Rod

I am reading a book on fly fishing for Redfish and the author recommends that, unless you are an expert caster you should overweight your rod by one line weight. He indicates that you need 40 ft of fly line out before your rod is fully weighted and that most fly casters have difficulty doing that. By loading your rod quicker with a heavier line, it allows you to minimize false casting (important in fishing for Reds) and allows for faster line delivery to cruising fish. What are your thoughts on this? Anyone do this?
