Passing of Charlie Alsheimer

I'm sure many know who Charlie Alsheimer is - a field editor for Deer & Deer Hunting magazine and TV show, author, photographer and seminar speaker. Unfortunately, Charlie passed away this weekend.

Charlie was a New York resident and much of his early work was in the southern Adirondacks near Avery's on Rt. 10. And he even wrote an book about hunting in the Adirondacks a few decades ago. This is a true loss to the deer hunting world.

Winter Walk

There is nothing quite like a winter's walk and the rewards that follow.

2018 New Years Camping Trip that wasn't

I’ve planned for this trip for over a year now. At least based on the fact that in the summer of 2016 I bucked, split, and stacked a stash of hard wood maple in anticipation I’d be returning to burn it one day. (I know it’s still there I stopped by to check on it the last day of hunting season.)

I was to stay for 3 nights over this New Years. I’d go in on Friday and return on Monday New Years Day. Everything was coming together and based on prior experience I had everything packed and I was off. After my arrival and having loaded and tied down my gear on the sled I put on my Permafrost Parka and hood but couldn’t locate my Buff (despite having it on my check list of equipment) but I did locate my backup balaclava.

The familiar ¾ mile sled haul across the lake was next and I knew I’d soon be setting up camp near my stash of dry hard wood for the weekend. The three night dinner menu consisted of venison back straps, homemade lasagna, or venison/bacon burgers. Breakfasts would consist of Oscars smoked pork tenderloin, hash browns with green peppers and onions, duck eggs, coffee, and OJ or instead of eggs buckwheat pancakes and maple syrup. I had some chili if I elected to eat lunch but I usually wouldn’t. Extra sharp cheese and crackers for hors d'oeuvres and to drink I had a new, for me, mead called Odin’s Tears by Heritage Meadery or I’d sip on Buckshot a peppered and maple bourbon whiskey gifted to me by my wife.

Over the weekend I had plans to extend my ski trail through the hardwood glade with my new skis, buck up some more wood for the wood stash, and drill some ice holes and try some fishing. Mostly however I would be savoring the moments being outdoors in the cold, sitting next to the wood stove gazing out my vinyl window listening to the cracking of trees and lake ice as they freeze up, the wind howling and rattling the tent at night, and listening to an audible book recommend to me by my brother: Astoria by Peter Stark.

Alas it’s not going to occur at the lake this New Year…
About 1/3 of the way across the lake I had a fleeting thought that there were no snowmobile trails that usually ran up the middle of the lake. A little further along I suddenly ran into a small patch of slush but quickly scurried through and around it. Mind you when you’re hauling a sled and backpack and do the “quickly scurried maneuver” you expend a fair amount of energy and well… I needed to pause for a rest. That pause resulted in my first sled freeze up. I quickly overturned my sled and scarped the slushy mess off and hauled further away from the area finding a slush free area to rest.

Having recouped I hauled on and nearing my ½ way mark it was now very apparent to me no snowmobiles have been on the lake at all. Simultaneously my tracks began to quickly fill in with slush so I attempted a 180 degree turn but by the time I passed my sled in the turn the slush locked onto its bottom and my skis. I was stuck... solid. Safe but stuck. I had to remove my skis and walk with them to find a slush free area and remove the now freezing slush on the skis bottoms. I reapplied “Glop Stopper” to the skins and rested. I eventually returned to the sled, turned it on its side, and began scraping the freezing slush off the bottom. It was at the beginning of this second, and move severe, slush event that I had decided I wasn’t going any further and that I would return home. I wouldn’t risk getting bogged down in any more slushy areas, perhaps several, to get to my camping area and stash of wood. These two events were exhausting… and had I gone on and encountered more slush I still would have to set up camp.

Overall it was a good day to be out and about in winter. I’ll still enjoy everything I was bringing with me camping I’ll just be enjoying it at home next to my wood stove in the den.

Cheers and Happy New Years Everyone!

Ski conditions update 12/29 (S of ADK)

Not seeing much recently on this site for skiing, I thought I’d provide some ski condition update for Saratoga & S Warren County. The good news is that with the few inches before Christmas (later settled by rain & cold), plus the 6-8” ending on Christmas day, many local spots have good skiing – and are free.

For the skinny ski fans – including 2 of my daughters - Cole’s Woods (off exit 19, near Crandall Park & the YMCA in Queensbury) has groomed the 5K loop for both skating & classic style. Conditions Wed 12/29 were very good except for some downed pine cones & tree debris. They have a lighted trail for night. Park behind Inside Edge ski shop on Rt 9.

The Lake George Recreation area (W of exit 21 near transfer station) had good cover & ski (or SS) tracks on most of its trails as of Tues 12/28. The trail up the W side of the mountain 200 yds after the first bridge was rough & water flowing – so not attractive yet. No grooming here (that I’ve ever seen).

Wilton Preserve (off exit 16) was skiable before Christmas and had been rolled. Surely good snow there now. Not extensive nor any real hills, but nice to get out.

With the local snow & verrrrry cold temps, I haven’t needed to drive any further yet. Skied the XC trails at Prospect Mtn (E of Bennington) the week before Christmas. They had great snow, and continue to have equal or more snow than other ADK locations other than Tug Hill. There, Lapland Lake & Garnet Hill are common destinations for groomed skiing - with a fee of course.

N toward Lake Placid finally got more snow, with good conditions reports periodically posted here: http://ift.tt/1wefIqW . Paul Smiths appears to have had the most reliable snow before the Christmas storm.

Enjoy winter! Any reports from ADK trails? Botheration?, Hoffman notch?, Pharaoh Lake?

Maple Run Falls-Ricketts Glen State Park

https://endlessmountains.wordpress.c...en-state-park/

This is a little known falls in the park that hides in plain sight, just below PA 487. About 15 feet tall, it falls into a fairly large pool. It is one of my favorite falls in the park due to it being a falls that appears to pour off the cliff. Above is a grotto with a slide and cascade. A beautiful spot in a popular park.

Stony Pond - 12/26/17

We snowshoed into Stony Pond from 28N. We were the first group since the new snow. Trail conditions were very good. Just a few downed trees to step over/duck under and a few wet spots in the trail to navigate around. It was very quiet at the pond. I was surprised when we reached the pond and there was a picnic table, but no lean-to! It was moved back into the woods since the last time I had been there. Trailhead was plowed with plenty of room to park off of the road.

Huawei Mate 10 Pro vs Iphone X

As title said, wanna ask your opinion on which phone should I choose between these two. Even though Iphone X is like the king of smartphones right now but I do wanna know whether it is really worth the increment in the pricetag or not.

Decent Short Hike, Ice Fishing Location

Hi everyone. I've done some winter camping/backpacking in my day, but have never incorporated ice fishing.

I'd like to try this out, by pulling a small sled to a camp site /lean to about 5 miles or less with a couple of friends. This would be in early February. I'm not familiar with good ice fishing locations, and ice thickness of various lakes and ponds.

Could anyone help me out with some decent locations for such an excursion? Something that isn't too crowded preferably, but would fit this description.

Primitive Cabin

Hello all, I’m in the military stationed up here in NY. I’m looking to take some of the guys out winter camping, but most would be new to winter camping. I’m looking for a cabin to rent to ease them into it, if anyone knows of a remote cabin with few amenities please pass along info. I’m basically looking for 4 walls and a wood stove or fireplace, and could fit 4-6 dudes. Also we’d like to find something that we would have to hike to get to.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks
Scott

My apologies if this is posted in the wrong area

Winter Overnight Boot Selection

Hi All,

I'm want to try my hand at winter camping and do my first trip this year. My main hang-up currently is selecting the proper footwear and I'm looking for some advice on winter boot selection. I've been reading up on other threads and have seen some great suggestions, but many of those seem like boots that wouldn't be good for overnight camping due to them freezing. I have been looking at purchasing Muck Boots, perhaps the Artic Sport Mid Height model thinking that because of their construction they would be less prone to freezing. I could perhaps add a wool/felt liner to the boot to take out each night and put in the sleeping bag to dry at night. Does anyone else use these boots, or something similar, for winter camping? Are they comfortable to hike in? The military surplus mickys seems like they would fit the bill, but they seem clunky and uncomfortable. Maybe I'm wrong about that?

Thanks in advance, happy trails and happy holidays!

Fishing Hudson River Gorge

Hi all

This Spring/Summer I am hoping to do some flyfishing up in the ADK's I am wondering about the Hudson River Gorge. Basically how long is the hike in. Would like to hike in and out in a day.

Also, does anyone know of any private campgrounds in the area or even the north creek area. I am not to fond of NY State Campgrounds. I have never been to one where the workers were not rude to me and my wife

Thanks

Nine Corner Lake, FLWF, 21 Dec, 2017

I had an awesome opportunity today to take my oldest daughter on a short snowshoe hike. After scratching my head for some time, we decided on Nine Corner Lake in the Ferris Lake Wild Forest. We choose this destination not only because it's a fairly easy walk, but the beauty of the lake (once you get away from the outlet) is fantastic. However, the real reason was to show my daughter the boulder field uphill from the lake. As a Geology major, she was very eager to check this out.

We arrived at the trailhead a little later than I normally do, but that was OK.

It really wasn't a problem as we were the only car in the parking lot and we weren't in a hurry. Fortunately, the woods were still in great shape.

The trail stair-steps up about 300 feet to the lakeshore and it was void of any snowmobile tracks. Many people had bare-booted, causing a rough and uneven track in spots. We stopped at the small waterfall for a short break.

The rest of the way to the lake went by quickly and soon we were at the long narrow outlet bay. We noticed the time, 11:28. Winter Solstice! We raised our water bottles in salute to the days finally getting longer (OK, that doesn't happen until early January, but let's not kill the moment ).

While the outlet bay is nice, I wanted to have lunch at one of the distant "corners". We struck out for one of the designated campsites on the east shore and enjoyed our hot soup in peaceful solitude. My daughter commented that she hadn't heard "quiet" in so long.

After letting our clam chowdah settle for a few minutes, we headed off to my daughter's new favorite spot; the boulder fields. Just north of the outlet bay, is a collection of huge glacial erratic boulders.

I know this is a very popular destination for the bouldering crowd and now, I can see why. These things were massive!

My budding geologist was in hog heaven as she weaved in and around these gifts from the glacier.

After we scratched or collective itch for exploring, it was a short walk down the hill to sign out of the woods.

We actually spent about three hours snowshoeing, snacking and poking around this really neat spot. It was an added bonus to be there with my oldest daughter, who's priorities and mine don't always mesh. Now, if only I could find some Adirondack destinations with cool geology, I'd have it made. Now where would I find a place like that?

Status of Rt. 10 Trailhead Parking Lots

Just took a drive up Rt. 10 after a short hike this AM. I was happy to see all the major trailheads plowed out and usable.

Of course, tonights snow may change this.

Keeping toes warm when winter hiking

Hi everyone. I'm looking for some opinions and advice on winter hiking and gear, specifically on keeping your toes warm. I developed a circulation problem with my toes a couple of years ago which is primarily activated by cold, and I haven't done any winter hiking since then; but I'd like to have a go at trying it again and see how my toes react. I already own and know how to use all the regular day-hiking winter gear - wool outer socks, poly inner sock liners, gaitors. I researched this topic online and I've seen some sites recommend using chemical toe warmers. One hesitation I have in using them is how the wear-and-tear of hiking, over the course of several miles, will impact them. I've also thought of adding a third sock layer specifically to cover my toes, but at that point all those layers might be too thick for my boots. Does anyone have any practical advice on this topic?

Status of snowmobile connector trails

I didn't catch the recent development on this issue until just now. Apparently a state judge dismissed the lawsuit initiated by Protect ADK's and the DEC has the go-ahead to continue with the snowmobile community connector trails.

http://ift.tt/2z6UktD

I had never really looked into where the DEC was proposing to put these trails, but based on the map I found over at ADK Almanack, the trails seem to closely parallel existing roads in the Newcomb, Minerva, North Hudson areas: http://ift.tt/2z72Wk5

State of Road to Pillsbury Mtn.

Has anyone been up the road to the trailhead to Pillsbury mtn. recently. As in within the past few days? Or, would it be gated closed by this time even if passable?

Ricketts Glen State Park Secret Vista

http://ift.tt/2kmWuRn

https://endlessmountains.wordpress.c...e-park-vistas/

A hike back in October to beautiful, off trail vistas from the east side of Ricketts Glen, and a gorge with some waterfalls. * I hiked on the Old Bulldozer Road Trail before it entered the mountain laurel.* I then headed west to the state park boundary, and then east along a ridge above a gorge, following some game trails.* The vistas were beautiful, I could see for 20-30 miles.* A small lake was in the gorge below.* I made the very steep descent to the gorge and saw some waterfalls.* This isolated side of the state park had some large trees and cascading streams. *

Hot Tenting

I have been trying to get into this for a while. I enjoy cold camping in winter, and have gear rated to cold temps. But it would be oh-so-nice to have the option to warm up, cook in comfort or dry off gear.

There are options for us hammock campers but I think I would be happy with just a warming tent to get out of the cold, cook, relax a bit before turning in. I would not hot tent without a sleep system rated for the temps w/o hot tent. Seek Outside has some nice low weight options and Lite Outdoors has a low weight stove. I also see people modding a $200 Mountain Guide Tarp.

The Winter Trekkng people swear by SnowTrekker tents but they are a bit expensive. I see other wedge tents and cabin tents and even bell tents made of fire retardant canvas.

I understand that you'd have to feed the stove so wandering around trying to gather and process enough wood would need to be included in planning. But again - if only for a warming tent, not expecting stove to stay lit 8 hours.

So my question is who has what and how do you like it?

A family trip to Barbados

Hi,

We are looking for a crazy destination for a family trip. We want to go a place which could be enjoyed by children as well as the youth and aged people. I came to know that most of the seniors could enjoy the Barbados island. And in search, I could find people of all age could have fun there.

I would like to hear from the experienced regarding this. Then only, we can fix our plan. And I want to know your opinion on this Barbados accommodation too. If you have any other suggestions regarding the place, kindly let us know it as soon as possible. Reply awaited. Thanks in advance!

Dinner on Christmas Day?

Anyone know of a restaurant (prefer rustic style) in or near the western/southwestern Adirondacks that might be serving dinner on Christmas day? My wife and I will have the day to ourselves and are hoping to find someplace open for dinner. We live near Pulaski and are willing to drive as far as Old Forge or possibly Speculator.

Opinions on Paying Using Electronic Apps

Ever since the entry of Alipay to Malaysia, there have been a rise in paying for goods using the so called electronic funds rather than the usual cash or debit/credit cards. For example the state of Sarawak also launched their own apps called the Sarawak Pay. Just wanna ask what do you guys think about it, whether it is good or bad or dont really affect much.

Locus Map Pro is on sale until the end of December.

If you have an Android phone and are looking for a top-notch backcountry navigation app, I highly recommended Locus Map Pro. It's on sale for US$3.49 until the end of December. It is also eligible for sharing via Family Library so one license entitles you to install it on all your Android devices.

I've been using it extensively for a year and it has a comprehensive feature set, is frequently updated and enhanced, and is well-supported by the development team and a large user-community. My favorite new feature is the ability to perform automatic-routing offline (no internet connection required to calculate a route along trails and/or roads).

You can influence the auto-router's calculations by adding via points (pass through a specific place and announce it during navigation), or shaping points (pass through a specific place but DO NOT announce it during navigation), or no-go points (avoid routing through here). It's a powerful tool for quickly drawing a hiking route and determining its length and elevation gain (and without an internet connection).

Blue Mt and Sawyer Mt

I couldn't resist the temptation to go play in the new snow. I checked the snow cover and decided I needed to head west. A quick look at the maps and I settled on Blue Mt. I figured I'd also check out Sawyer Mt.... well just because it was there :D

My third attempt at ignoring the snooze alarm also failed so I decided to get up. It certainly wasn't early by my standards but the sun wasn't up so I called it a win. A few podcasts later I was at the Blue Mt trail head. There was a light but persistent snow just strong enough to have a little bit of fun driving.

I hit the empty trail and immediately regretted the beers I had last night. Also weighing on me were all the unhealthy fattening foods I've devoured without regard this holiday season. Seeing snowshoe tracks from the parking area, I followed suit to preserve the integrity of the trail. The snow base was not what I had hoped for but I enjoyed the climb regardless. Without any views I didn't linger at the top. The descent went much quicker and even offered some filtered views of Blue Mt Lake.

On I went to the Sawyer Mt trail head. I have to admit I was excited to get there knowing that the fresh snow was likely undisturbed. I was treated to 6-9" of unbroken snow on the short 1 mile trail. A workout like this was what I really needed! It didn't take long to remember how much work even that little bit of snow can be. After a methodically paced slog up, I was treated to limited views.

Suffice to say I was successful in shaking the dust off the snowshoes and further acclimating to the colder temps. Overall another nice but short day in the woods. Only saw one other soul all day.

looking for advice!

I'm not new to the high peaks, but I am new to doing them in the winter. I have snowshoes and crampons already but im not sure which mountains are the best to do in the winter. I was thinking of doing Table Top but not sure.

What are the best mountains to do in the winter?

Also is there a place to get good maps for these trails?... so far I've been looking online and just reading forums on how to get to theses trail heads(some are helpful and some not so much).

Georgia Creek, WLWF, 15 Dec, 2017

Today, Tredhed and I decided to brave the chilly temperatures for an early season equipment shakedown. We wanted a short and somewhat mellow walk to check out our snowshoes, bindings, poles, winter packs and layering system. Since we were going to be at the cabin for some minor maintenance, Georgia Creek in the western Wilcox Lake Wild Forest fit the bill quite nicely.

We arrived mid-morning at the large Georgia Creek parking area on Rt. 8 and suited up.

It had been a few years since I had been to this infrequently visited trailhead. However, we were surprised at the dozen or so people who had signed in the register the last few months. The Moose's Hoof ledges seemed to be a pretty popular destination.

Since we weren't headed there today, we made our mark and headed up the overgrown trail to the junction with the abandoned snowmobile trail. There was plenty of blowdown that we had to re-learn how to negotiate with our snowshoes.

The blue disked connector trail, was fairly easy to follow. The snow conditions today were perfect as there was about 8 inches of loose powder in the woods.

The trail climbed about 100' to the junction with the old snowmobile trail.

We turned east on the old trail and headed towards the Georgia Creek marshes. Other than deer and coyote tracks, ours were the only ones in this stretch of the woods today.

After a half mile of level walking, with a few more blowdown to negotiate, we came to the frozen marshes along Georgia Creek.

The late morning sun reflected off the fresh snow and made us forget (for a few moments) that the air temperature was somewhere around +6°.

There was an abundance of winterberries in this little marsh sandwiched between Georgia and Moose Mountains. Tredhed was able to capture a great photo of a large grouping of these colorful attractions.

We explored the marsh for quite some time. Unfortunately, the clouds were starting to roll in and the views of the frozen Georgia Creek, while still spectacular, were a little muted.

Too soon it was time to depart. About three minutes after we re-entered the woods, two UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters flew down the Georgia Creek valley at about 100'. Kind of neat to see them that close up. The rotor noise quickly died down and all that was to do was follow our tracks back down the trail to Route 8.

It was a great shakedown hike this morning. We tweaked our gear, shed layers and got used to the rhythm of the snowshoes. All that was left to do was to head up to Speculator and grab a pint of Beaver Bite IPA and a burger. A great ending to a great hike.

Waterfalls of Sullivan Branch-SGL 13

https://endlessmountains.wordpress.c...branch-sgl-13/

This was a hike from the other month up beautiful Sullivan Branch (PA) with its deep gorge and many waterfalls, located west of Ricketts Glen. Sullivan Branch is one of PA's most scenic streams, and several of its tributaries have waterfalls as well.* I was scouting a route of the proposed Endless Mountains Trail.* I also explored a nearby ridge to see some interesting boulders and outcrops.
