Opinions Needed on Trip Options

Hi everyone - Hoping you guys can offer an opinion (or two) on a few canoe trip options that I'm trying pick between. I'm organizing an annual guys ADK canoe trip. We've been to most of the more known spots, and in some cases repeated a few (nothing wrong with that).

The group is 6-7 guys, coming from Boston and Rochester NY. 4 days, 3 night trip. This year will be mid-July. Love to set up a base camp and do side trips during the day. love fishing, no more than 1 carry, privacy, and nice campsites (lean to would be amazing). Love a hiking trail if possible.

Given that, here's a few spots we either haven't been to, or would consider going again. Curious your thoughts:

1.) Stillwater Reservoir

2.) Follensby Clear/Pollywog Pond (haven't been)

3.) Forked Lake (do you have to book sites on reserveamerica?)

4.) Cedar River Flow (went before under miserable conditions)

I appreciate any input. Anxious to pick a spot and start day dreaming!

Thought some might find this group's winter thru hike attempt interesting.

A constant roar over the SE Adirondacks

On recent hikes east of Sacandaga, noticed the continuous every few minute flights of commercial aircraft. A Flight Tracker app provided the answer. Only a portion of the flights are regional from Montreal, Boston, Albany, Burlington, Toronto, etc.

The curvature of the earth explains the main reason. Many international flights between Europe and the entire U.S. and Carribbean utilize the shortest distance over Greenland and travel right over eastern NY. A shorter distance than what would seem a straight line on a paper map going via the mid-Atlantic. There is a flight superhighway right over the eastern Adirondacks.

Money relationship?

Have a friend work as sugar baby. Interested to join but scared. Can i asked for some advice?

Paul Robinson

Now deceased, Paul of Upper Jay NY, is someone who shouldn't be forgotten.
He owned and ran a small gas station/gunstore there in Upper Jay and may have been the inventor of the 'Adirondack Fur Fish' and had the photos and stories to prove it.
He could be quite funny and he could play some good tricks on tourists and locals alike. A born story teller with wit. He once told an unsuccessful New Jersey hunter who had asked what the secret to bagging a nice buck, Paul said, Go in the woods and make a noise like an apple. The man paid for his gas and thanked Paul and left. 3am the phone rang and when Paul answered it was the man from New Jersey. He'd been up all night wondering what kind of noise an apple made...lol.
Another time a man stopped for gas and when Paul went out to pump it the man asked if he could go inside. Paul said sure I have a friend inside.
When Paul went back in the man very quickly paid for his gas and a candy bar then left.
Paul's friend spoke up and said, That guy sure was strange, every time I got near him to speak to him he moved away.
Paul said to his friend. I told him you were a pickpocket!
One helluva a hunter he had lots of mounted deer heads.
His grandfather had invented/manufactured Robinson Rifles which Winchester bought the patents for and put him out of business figuring they were better than theirs.
Paul owned a collection of those old firearms and I got to handle them...a rare treat.
He was also kind and generous.
He was born 1904 and died 1995.
His ancestors were noted for making violins and examples are in the ADK Museum.

Kaspersky Southeast Asia: Enterprise solutions segment grows twofold in 2019

Results fueled by company’s security portfolio that predict, prevent, detect, and respond to the most sophisticated cyberthreats

Kaspersky today announces the three-digit year-on-year (YOY) growth of its enterprise solutions segment last year in Southeast Asia. With its expanding business portfolio specialising in threat hunting, threat intelligence, incident response, and a wide array of professional services, the global cybersecurity company posted a more than double increase on its enterprise solutions segment in the region compared to its 2018 results.

Driving the region’s growth in the enterprise solutions segment are the company’s key business solutions --- Kaspersky’s Threat Intelligence and Kaspersky Anti-Targeted Attack. These products are part of Kaspersky Cybersecurity Services portfolio which aims to provide a holistic “true cybersecurity” for companies across Southeast Asia.

“When we talk about true cybersecurity, it involves the combination of solutions and professional services which can cover the four stages of a cybersecurity attack --- predict, prevent, detect, and respond. Our 2019 enterprise results clearly proves more and more enterprise stakeholders in the region believe in our expertise and capability to secure their systems and networks from the most common threats to the most sophisticated attacks,” says Yeo Siang Tiong, General Manager for Southeast Asia at Kaspersky.

Commenting on the region’s 2019 results, Stephan Neumeier, Managing Director for Asia Pacific at Kaspersky adds, “Southeast Asia undoubtedly had a phenomenal year. While it houses countries at different levels of IT maturity as well economic stages, one thing is common --- enterprises in this region are starting to see the importance of a multi-layer approach to cybersecurity especially as they embark on their Industry 4.0 journeys. With our in-depth threat intelligence and next-generation technology, we are confident that our enterprise growth in this region, along with the entire Asia Pacific, has just started.”

In terms of the company’s whole enterprise segment, including Kaspersky’s endpoint and non-endpoint solutions, 2019 results showed that Singapore logged a whopping three-digit growth while Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand posted a double-digit growth. The combined numbers of Vietnam, Cambodia, and Myanmar posted a one-digit increase compared to its enterprise numbers in 2018.

Digital sales of Kaspersky’s consumer and business suite also ramps up the overall growth of the company in the region. The countries of Vietnam, Cambodia, and Myanmar led the region with its three-digit markup. The rest of the nations in Southeast Asia also showed a two-digit increase on their digital sales. The global company’s SMB portfolio has its share of achievements as well with the Philippines posting a double-digit YOY growth.

Overall, Kaspersky’s Southeast Asia region has recorded robust results across its digital, SMB, and enterprise segments last year.

In 2019, Kaspersky has launched its new brand globally supported by rebranding activities across its offices worldwide, including the Asia Pacific headquarters in Singapore and the Southeast Asia office in Malaysia. The global cybersecurity company has also continued its transparency initiatives and strategic partnerships in Southeast Asia. It has renewed its cooperation with INTERPOL last July and has signed several Memorandum of Understanding with key cybersecurity agencies across the region.

“We are grateful for the unparalleled trust we are receiving from our customers, our stakeholders, and our industry peers. As an evolving cybersecurity company, we will continue to strive to advocate transparency and cooperation in the industry and to constantly improve on our threat intelligence capability and next-generation technologies to combat complex threats lurking online,” adds Yeo.

Meaning of 'Adirondack'

Usually the definition of 'Adirondack' is 1. 'Bark Eater' but there have been others and many years ago I read where it meant 2. Eater of mucus' or 'Mucus eater' [seriously].
Maybe 'mucus' meant 'inner bark' who the heck knows?
But anyways does anyone know the name of the book I read the 2nd definition in?

NFCT to buy 90 miler

Nine Corner Lake, FLWF, 22 Jan, 2020

On Tuesday the 22nd, Tredhed and I headed out into the Ferris Lake Wild Forest. Our initial destination of Broomstick Lake was scrubbed because the parking lot wasn't plowed out.

Nine Corner was our backup and it turned out to be a great hike.

Arriving at the trailhead on Rt. 29A around 9:00, we met two long-time Forum members Gail and Kathy as well as Berta the awesome dog!

It's always nice to meet other Forum members and it turns out that Gail and I had been hiking together many years ago as part of the now defunct, Adirondack Wilderness Explorers http://www.adkforum.com/showthread.php?t=20161

After signing in, Tredhed and I started up the well-packed trail.

We were careful to keep a brisk pace so as not to be smoked by Gail, Kathy and Berta.

I did make the obligatory stop at the small waterfall to capture the moment.

To me, it looked like the water was flowing out of the mouth of a snow demon.

Soon enough, we covered the short distance to the outlet of the lake.

Do you think they don't want anyone to camp there? :)

A few minutes later, we met up with Gail, Kathy and Berta and chatted a bit more.

Too soon, we parted ways as Tredhed and I struck out across the lake to explore some of the "corners".

We walked down the lake to poke around the northern "corner" and the views were spectacular.

After hoofing it down the lake, we decided to check out some of the eleven well situated designated campsites.

Of course, no trip to Nine Corner Lake wouldn't be complete without checking out some of the massive glacial erratics that dot the woods near the outlet.

I can definitely see why this is such a popular spot for the bouldering crowd.

Truly fantastic specimens.

Just as we started back down the trail, the sun started to come out and cast beautiful shadows through the woods.

The trail was in great shape this day as it was well packed by snowshoes.

Usually, this is a heavily traveled snowmobile trail, but with only 6"-8" inches of snow, the sleds haven't been out yet.

We knew when we were close to the trailhead when we could see Kane Mt. through the trees.

Overall, it was an great short hike. We would have like to hit up Broomstick Lake, but we'll save that for the next time. There's some neat features there that we need to re-visit. Standby for that TR soon.

Mystery shopper: malicious app spreads fake reviews thanks to in-app accessibility service abuse

Kaspersky researchers detected a Trojan application that terrorizes users with unsolicited ads and boosts installations of online shopping applications – fooling both users and advertisers. This malicious app visits smartphone app stores, downloads and launches applications and leaves fake reviews on behalf of the user, all while hiding itself from the device owner.

As winter sales are hitting the stores, both users and brands need to be wary. When choosing shops, users rely heavily on reviews, while retailers increase their promotion and advertising budgets. As it turns out, neither can fully trust what they see online, as a new Trojan application is boosting popular shopping app ratings and installations, and spreading numerous ads that may annoy users.

The Trojan, dubbed ‘Shopper’, first drew the attention of researchers following its extensive obfuscation and use of the Google Accessibility Service. The service enables users to set a voice to read out app content and automate interaction with the user interface – designed to help people with disabilities. However, in the hands of attackers this feature presents a serious threat to the device owner.

Once it has the permission to use the service, the malware can gain almost unlimited opportunities to interact with the system interface and applications. It can capture data featured on the screen, press buttons and even emulate user gestures. It is not known yet how the malicious application is being spread, however Kaspersky researchers assume that it may be downloaded by device owners from fraudulent ads or third-party app stores while trying to get a legitimate application. The app masks itself as a system application and uses a system icon named ConfigAPKs in order to hide itself from the user. After the screen is unlocked, the app launches, gathers information about the victim’s device and sends it to the attacker’s servers. The server returns the commands for the application to execute. Depending on the commands, the app can:
• Use a device owner’s Google or Facebook account to register on popular shopping and entertainment apps, including AliExpress, Lazada, Zalora, Shein, Joom, Likee and Alibaba;

• Leave application reviews in Google Play on behalf of the device owner;

• Check the rights to use the Accessibility Service. If permission is not granted, it sends a phishing request for them;

• Turn off Google Play Protect, a feature that runs a safety check on apps from the Google Play Store before they are downloaded;

• Open links received from the remote server in an invisible window and hide itself from the app menu after a number of screens are unblocked;

• Show ads when unblocking the device’s screen and create labels to advertised ads in the app menu;

• Download applications from the Apkpure[.]com ‘market’ and install them;

• Open and download advertised applications in Google Play;

• Replace labels of installed apps with labels of advertised pages

The highest share of users infected by Trojan-Dropper.AndroidOS.Shopper.a from October to November 2019 was in Russia, with a staggering 28.46% of all users affected by the shopaholic app located in the country. Almost a fifth (18.70%) of infections were in Brazil and 14.23% in India.

“Despite the fact that at the moment, the real danger stemming from this malicious app is limited to unsolicited ads, fake reviews and ratings issued in the name of the victim, no one can guarantee that the creators of this malware will not change their payload to something else. For now, the focus of this malicious app is on retail, but its capabilities enable attackers to spread fake information via users’ social media accounts and other platforms. For example, it could automatically share videos containing whatever the operators behind Shopper would want on personal pages of users accounts and just flood the internet with unreliable information”, - says Igor Golovin, Kaspersky malware analyst.

Kaspersky products successfully detect and block the Shopper malware under the following detection name: Trojan-Dropper.AndroidOS.Shopper. Read more about the Shopper on Securelist.com.

To reduce the risk of infection by malware threats such as this one, users are advised to follow the recommendations below:

• Beware of apps that require the use of the Accessibility Service, if the application isn’t meant to be used with this function
• Always check application permissions to see what your installed apps are allowed to do
• Do not install applications from untrusted sources, even if they are actively advertised, and block the installation of programs from unknown sources in your smartphone’s settings
• Use a reliable mobile security solution, such as Kaspersky Internet Security for Android, that can help identify potentially dangerous or questionable requests made by the downloaded application, and explain the risks associated with different types of common permissions

Getting Ready for Spring Brookies....

Hi gents, I’m getting ready for spring and would like to try fly fishing for brookies . I have done well with the lake clear wabbler and would like to give the fly rod a go. With that said I picked up a Hornbeck fishing canoe so that will be my platform. I used to fly fish quite a bit years ago but fell off, that was only streams as well. I virtually know nothing about still water. I have two sage rods, a 3 weight 7 1/2 and a 5 weight 9 foot rod. Curious as to what tactics have worked best for you and what all around setups one would recommend as far as lines sinking, sink tip etc. Also some must have flies...Trolling or casting? It’s cold and cabin fever is setting in. Help a newbie out! Thanks

Chris

Kaspersky IT Security Calculator, a free web tool

According to statistics from the Kaspersky IT Security Calculator, budgets at 45% of SMBs and 50% of enterprises are below the average spend — which is $205k for small and medium and $8m for enterprise businesses. This is even though cybersecurity spending is growing year-on-year with almost 9% growth in 2019, according to Gartner report.

Knowing how much money is spent on IT security across the industry allows companies to understand where they are in the market, to compare their budget with other players and even improve planning. The Kaspersky IT Security Calculator helps businesses receive these insights. It is a free web tool where IT security managers can view the average budget for cybersecurity in their region and industry and compare this to budgets in their organization.

Globally, IT security budgets are demonstrating positive dynamics: as a number of analyst reports show, they continue to grow year on year. Kaspersky’s own survey of almost five thousand organizations across the world confirms this trend with 70% of respondents showing they expect their IT security budget to increase in the next three years.
However, statistics from usage of the Kaspersky IT Security Calculator in October 2018- 2019 revealed that some businesses are not keeping up with this trend, as their IT security spending is even lower than average. This is seen in 45% of calculations for SMBs and 50% for enterprise users of the tool.

Overall, budgets for SMBs were reviewed more actively (46%) than for enterprises (38%) and very small companies (16%). For small and medium businesses the budget issue can be even more complicated: it’s not only about money but also about the alignment of the budget planning process. It can be challenging because of demands on human resources and expertise in relevant cybersecurity risks and protection methods for different business services.

“Budget planning is a very important process for companies as proper investments ensure a company is ready to meet current cybersecurity challenges and threats. Though it may be a complex task which demands a good understanding of business needs towards cybersecurity, how to address them and how much it can cost,” commented Sergey Martsynkyan, Head of B2B Product Marketing, Kaspersky. “We at Kaspersky try to give organizations insights to help them with this process. Along with the report on IT security economics we prepare annually, the IT Security Calculator gives a glance on average cybersecurity spending, as well as specific threats and advice on protection measures”.

The Kaspersky IT Security Calculator website with threat statistics and recommended protection is available here.

The Adirondack Camping Challenge

I’m not a peak bagger. I camp out of my kayak, or, on an occasion, I backpack several miles in to camp. But I don’t have a 46-item list to check off. And I’ve noticed that I’ve been stuck in a rut – often camping in the same areas. I must have camped a dozen times each on Stillwater Reservoir, Cranberry Lake and Indian Lake over the past 10 years.

So how about a challenge that I could actually care about? I’ve come up with a challenge for myself to camp in every Wilderness and Wild Forest unit within the blue line. I did not include Primitive Areas because these are often small and transitional in nature. My rules are that camping can be in a tent, lean-to, hammock or under the stars. It does not have to be at a designated campsite – it could be following the rules of camping 150 ft away from waterbody, trail and road. Regular DEC campgrounds on lands designated as intensive use do not count.

A few of the Adirondack units have very few designated campsites listed, and three of the wildernesses, Little Moose Mountain, Jay Mountain and Hoffman Notch have no designated campsites or lean-tos.

So here is my list of 47 such units - which is 1 more than 46! I only list one campsite per unit where I have camped at least once. I have 20 checked off - I am not even half way there. But I’m hoping this will get me to explore more areas of the park.

North Branch, SLWA, 14 Jan, 2020

Today, I had the opportunity to do a little "Forest Bathing" back into the North Branch of the Sacandaga River, deep in the Silver Lake Wilderness Area. This is a good winter walk because the path is usually very wet and the cold/snow helps freeze the shortcut across a prominent tributary. However, today's weather was anything but winter-like; more like early April.

Undeterred by the warm temperatures and bright sunshine , I hit the "trailhead" on Rt. 10 in Arietta around 9:00.

There's not really a formally marked trail here, more of an old logging road that strikes out into the wilderness. However, the first several hundred yards of the path goes right through the ruins of the Arietta Tannery. A very cool historic site.

I chose to wear micro spikes and strap my Tubbs to the pack. It proved to be a good decision as the path was either bare ground...

...or well packed from recent use.

I took the 3/4 mile detour around the swampy area because I knew that crossing the marsh would end in disaster. Soon enough, the by-pass reconnects with the main path up the valley. I was pleasantly surprised to see a well packed trail and some very recent trail maintenance.

I noticed many reflective thumbtacks stuck in trees; most likely used by hunters to find their way in the dark. There were also several fresh blazes along the route. The seemed a little unnecessary, but who am I to say.

The old road crosses many small drainages and the corduroy still provides ample support after all these years.

While the path winds through some fabulous forest, it also passes close by the North Branch as it tumbles through the woods...

...and as it meanders through several large flows.

After about 2 miles, the recent maintenance on the old road ceased and at times, it became very difficult to follow the trace. However, just when I was about to turn around, I found the road again and followed it to a nice vly. I spotted a nice log and sat down to have my lunch. Even though the clouds were starting to move in, the view was pretty good.

After lunch, I started back for Rt. 10. I walked for a little over two hours to get this far into the Wilderness Area and knew I had a walk ahead of me to get back out. Just as I was coming out through the old tannery site, I passed a young man walking his 5 month old Husky. Beautiful dog. All told, I spent about five hours in the woods on a spectacular mid-January day.

Avalanche Pass Equipment Rec.

Looking for equipment recommendation for an out and back day ski tour from ADK Loj to Avalanche Pass and possibly Lake Colden. I have an AT set up with skins OR an all-around XC ski (non-metal edge).

Having not hiked the trail, I'm curious if the skins on AT skis will be more of a hindrance than a useful tool OR if my basic XC set up won't hold up to the rigors of the terrain. Not opposed to renting equipment if either of these won't cut it.

My AT/downhill experience is mostly rooted in VT sidecountry and I'm confident I can handle the tour as I have good route finding and backcountry experience, but I'm looking for equipment recs.

I recently picked up Goodman's "Best Backcountry Ski Tours" and have a strong desire to try some ADK tours. I figured starting with this tour would be a solid intro before attempting a summit.

Any advice appreciated!

Camping, rafting, fishing trip planning help please!

Hello all,

Every summer my soon to be 12 year old son and I go on some kind of summer camping/adventure experience. After spending the last few summers in the White Mountain area (Lost River Campground last year, which we liked very much), I think I would like to venture into the Adirondacks, but, after hours and hours of research, I am completely confused by all the options and outfitters.

So, I turn to you for help, and hope you can provide some guidance. Our trip this year will likely be in mid-late August, and our ideal trip will include:

- campground, public or private, that offers fairly private tent sites, preferably along some kind of river or waterway, that has bathrooms/showers and preferably laundry, as I expect to be traveling for awhile. Bonus points for running water at the sites, camp store, game room, etc. Want to feel like we are in nature, and not hear highway noise or Betty and Josh knocking boots in a neighboring site.

- A location that, while still relatively remote, still has things like gas stations and sources of food within a few miles -- I'm not really planning on cooking at the campsite and we need to eat.

- an intermediate white water rafting trip that is adventurous enough for my inexperienced son, and won't kill us! So many rafting options, that I need some help identifying the right trip and company. Thinking class II-III, or maybe the occasional gentle class IV, but I really do not want any of us flying out of the raft...been there, done that, almost died, and now I have a healthy fear.

- A location that has activities, other than rafting, such as fly-fishing (would love to hire a guide to teach us and be able to eat our catch), golfing, downhill mountain biking, etc. Willing to drive significant distance from campsite for these activities (like 2 hours max).

Any leads or direction you can provide me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Hold my beer

Rangers and Encon must have loved this one...

Wilderness Rescue: On Dec. 31 at 2:45 p.m., DEC's Ray Brook Dispatch received a call from Franklin County 911 reporting that the Tupper Lake EMS squad was dispatched to site 95 of the Fish Creek Campground regarding a 19-year-old male from Lake Clear with a leg injury. Forest Ranger Pete Evans and Environmental Conservation Police Officer Nate Favreau responded to the scene. Upon his arrival, Officer Favreau met with New York State Police and found that the injury was the result of an accident involving a jet sled being pulled behind a pick-up truck. The operator lost traction due to icy road conditions, causing the truck to lurch. The sled then hit a tree and ejected the subject, causing an upper leg injury. The man was taken by Tupper Lake EMS to seek further medical assistance. All units were clear from the scene at 4:09 p.m.

Migrating D-Link DIR-868L router firmwares : DD-WRT and Tomato custom firmwares

Introduction to Guide

This guide was developed from various online resources and personal experience on D-Link DIR-868L router. :)

Credits are due to all contributions. :s7:

I hope this guide will help others wishing to try DD-WRT and Tomato firmware on their DIR-868L router.:s7:

I know how difficult this process can be.:s11:

The units were purchased from Shopee Malaysia in November 2019. So it’s a recent model with HW A1 and FW 1.22SHC.
I managed to migrate all of them to DD-WRT and Tomato/Advanced Tomato.
Also, I am able to migrated back to D-Link factory firmware FW-1.22SHC.

Altogether, there are three to four steps that you need to follow in order to migrate your DIR-868L to custom firmware like DD-WRT or Tomato with minimal problems.

Good Luck.;)

Step 1: Downgrade DIR-868L factory firmware to FW1.00SHC

• Bear in mind that it is not recommended to install third-party firmware such as DD-WRT or Tomato though D-Link normal firmware upgrade. You will encounter all kind of problems. Something that you really want to avoid.
• You need to perform migration at Recovery Mode. Please refer to the steps at Recovery Mode, last section of this guide.
• First, you need to downgrade from your existing firmware (e.g. FW1.22SHC) to FW1.00SHC. This is important for successful migration to DD-WRT or Tomato firmware.
• Download FW1.00SHC firmware from D-Link Singapore website https://www.dlink.com.sg/dir-868l/#firmware.
• Unplug all cables (incl. power cable) from the router.
• Connect the router to the PC using one of the 4 switch ports. Please do not plug to the WAN port (yellow colour) or use WiFi.
• Set computer IP address to 192.168.0.2 and use 255.255.255.0 as the Subnet mask.
• Power-on the router while pushing a paperclip to the hidden reset button located at the bottom of the device for a few seconds.
• When the Power LED starts blinking, release the reset button.
• Use Mozilla FireFox browser and navigate to http://192.168.0.1. Other browsers will give you problems.
• You will see a text-based firmware update page where you can select the firmware file you want to upload.
• Upload the FW1.00SHC firmware, when completed the router should reboot.
• The router should now be running FW1.00SHC firmware and accessible on the default address. (http://192.168.0.1). Default user is admin and no password i.e. blank
• The router is ready to be migrated to DD-WRT firmware.
• It is important to note that it is necessary to migrate the router to DD-WRT first before you migrate to Tomato firmware.

Step 2A: Migrate to DD-WRT firmware

• First, you need to download DD-WRT firmware.
• DD-WRT version r25974 was used with great success repeatedly on three separate units.
• Download the r25974 files here. ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/2015/01-20-2015-r25974/
• Download two files factory-to-ddwrt.bin and dir868a-webflash.bin.
• First, flash the factory-to-ddwrt.bin file using the D-Link router’s firmware upgrade page.
• The process will take up a few minutes. Once successfully flashed, the router will reboot.
• Next, go to the router main page (default is 192.168.1.1)
• Using the router upgrade page, flash second file, dir868-webflash.bin.
• The router will reboot once again.
• You should see DD-WRT and will be asked to enter new user and new password.
• I suggest admin and admin, respectively. You can change them when you complete the whole migration process.
• At this point you have a choice to upgrade to newer DD-WRT firmware version (Step 2B) or migrate to Tomato firmware (Step 2C).
• The following link may help you to decide to choose between DD-WRT or Tomato firmware. https://techstorify.com/dd-wrt-vs-to...uter-firmware/

Step 2B: Upgrade to newer DD-WRT firmware

• Download the latest DD-WRT firmware ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/
• Choose 2019 folder.
• Latest in December 2019 was r41686 ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/2019/12-1...-dir868l-reva/
• Download the dir868a-webflash.bin file.
• Next, go to the router main page (default is 192.168.1.1)
• Go to Administration -> Firmware Upgrade and browse to select the file.
• Then flash the dir868a-webflash.bin file with Reset to Default Settings.
• As usual the process will take a few minutes.
• Once complete, the new DD-WRT firmware should boot up.
• This will take a few more minutes. Once done, you are all set!

Step 2C: Migrate to Tomato firmware

• Download the latest Tomato by Shibby firmware.
• Latest is version is 140. http://tomato.groov.pl/download/K26ARM/140-MultiWAN/
• Unzip the file.
• Go to Administration -> Firmware Upgrade and browse to select the file.
• Then flash the tomato-DIR868L-ARM--140-special.trx file with Reset to Default Settings.
• As usual the process will take a few minutes.
• Once complete, the new Tomato firmware should boot up.
• Right after this, go to Administration -> Configuration ->Restore Default Configuration and choose Erase all data in NVRAM memory (thorough) option.
• Click OK button.
• This will take a few more minutes. Once done, you are all set!

Step 2D: Optional upgrade to Advanced Tomato firmware

• This is an optional step.
• Advanced Tomato present a more pleasant GUI that some of us would appreciate.
• Download the latest Advanced Tomato firmware.
• Latest is version is 3.5-140. https://advancedtomato.com/downloads/router/dir868l
• Unzip the file.
• Go to Administration -> Firmware Upgrade and browse to select the file.
• Then flash the tomato-DIR868L-AT-ARM-3.5-140-special.trx file with Reset to Default Settings.

Recovery Mode:

D-Link DIR-868L provides an easy way to recover using Recovery Mode (Also a useful and a recommended way to install third-party firmware)
• When the Power LED keeps blinking on boot, the router has entered the recovery mode.
• This usually happens when flashing a firmware went wrong, or the configuration has been corrupted.
• It is also possible to (force) boot into recovery mode to restore a soft-bricked router or flashing back to the factory firmware.
• Download the latest available firmware on the official D-Link website of the router revision. https://www.dlink.com.sg/dir-868l/#firmware
• Unplug all cables (incl. power cable) from the router
• Connect the router to the PC using one of the 4 LAN ports. Please do not plug to the WAN port (yellow colour) or use WiFi.
• Set the PC TCP/IPv4 address to 192.168.0.2 and use 255.255.255.0 as the Subnet mask
• Power-on the router while pushing a paperclip to the hidden reset button located at the bottom of the device for a few seconds.
• When the Power LED starts blinking, release the reset button
• Use Mozilla FireFox browser and navigate to http://192.168.0.1. Other browser will give you problems.
• Upload the D-Link firmware, when completed the router should reboot.
• The router should now be running factory D-Link firmware and accessible on the default address. (http://192.168.0.1).
• Please note that if you encounter problems going back to the latest factory D-Link firmware, it is suggested to start with an early firmware e.g. FW1.03 and work your way up until the latest.
• Each time you need to reset to factory defaults to clear the NVRAM memory of the router, before you upgrade to a newer firmware.
• The last step seems to be necessary when you are upgrading from FW110 to FW122, if you encounter a warning that size of the firmware is too big.

ADK High Peaks Names/Graves Project

I usually spend most of my time over on the High Peaks Forum but given the topic I figured my post might fit in with Adirondack History & Folklore so I cross-posted here as well. Hope you find the information of some interest.

Currently, twenty-four of the Adirondack High Peaks are named after twenty-three different people. Most are illustrious political figures from bygone eras, influential individuals in the history of the region, or little known folks who briefly spent time in the Adirondacks over 150 years ago. You've climbed the mountains that were named in their honor. You may even be familiar with the exploits of Bob Marshall, Orson Phelps, Verplanck Colvin, or Mills Blake. Or perhaps you corresponded with Grace Hudowalski while you were an aspiring 46er or even knew her personally. The rest are names relegated to the pages of dusty old history books. You've probably read the brief one-sentence bios on them in a guidebook but can only vaguely remember whether they were a politician, author, some sort of scientist, or a crusty old Adirondack guide. I'll guess you really never thought of what happened to them after their professional careers ended or gave any thought to how they died or where they were buried. Oddly, I have.

This past weekend I finally completed an Adirondack historical project that I have been working on for the last five years. It all started in the fall of 2014 when I decided to take a drive through Albany Rural Cemetery which is just a few miles from where I live here in the Capital District. President Chester A. Arthur is buried there and I hadn't been to his gravesite in ages. That was my main reason for visiting but before setting out I gave a quick scan of who else was buried in the cemetery. William L. Marcy jumped off the page at me and I had one of those light bulb over the head moments. Maybe I could find and visit the graves of all of the people for whom the Adirondack High Peaks were named for. And so the project was born.

I won't bore you with all the details of my research. Let's just say several of the people were very difficult to track down given I was only armed with a few historical references to who some of them even were. Complicating matters was that most of them died 100-150 years ago. I wasn't new to researching such information or visiting cemeteries. On my list of various hobbies visiting old cemeteries probably ranks somewhere down around 15th or so but I do find them fascinating. How people are buried tells you a lot about how they lived. I've been to maybe a hundred different cemeteries over the past few decades, generally when I'm traveling somewhere on vacation or driving through a town where somebody famous is buried. There's always something interesting to be found or a story to be told.

So my master list includes the twenty-three people whose names are currently attached to a High Peak: Allen, Armstrong, Blake, Colden, Colvin, Dix, Donaldson, Emmons, Esther, Grace, Gray, Hough, Macomb, Marcy, Marshall, Nye, Phelps, Porter, Redfield, Seward, Seymour, Street, and Wright.

And in an effort to have a complete a list as possible I also identified, researched, and found the graves of those people who high peaks were once named for and later changed, names used locally but never officially designated, a few disputed names, and one used by local Native Americans. I didn't get too deep into the weeds with names that may have appeared on one map from one source 150 or 200 years ago. I generally stuck to widely accepted use for a period of time as my cut-off point. That added nine more names to the list. Here are those people with the old/local/disputed mountain name in bold and the present day mountains that their names were once attached to in italics:

Russell Carson - South Dix
Herbert Clark - Marshall
Dewitt Clinton - Marshall
George Marshall - Hough
Archibald McIntyre - Wright, Algonquin, and Marshall
Duncan McMartin - Colden
King Hendrick Theyanoguin for Thei-A-No-Guen (Whitehead) - Whiteface
Sabael Benedict - for Sebille now Colvin
Sabael (Lewis Elijah Benedict) - also for Sebille now Colvin

Through my research I was able to locate all of the twenty-eight known grave sites of these thirty-two individuals and have visited and photographically documented each one. This quest has taken me to a few dozen different cemeteries all over the northeast and as far away as Washington DC.

As for the four unknown sites... unfortunately, Esther, Sabael Benedict, King Hendrick, and George Marshall have been impossible to locate. King Hendrick was killed in the Bloody Morning Scout during the French & Indian War and is believed to be buried where he fell (on present day Route 9 between Exit 20 & 21 of the Northway). Sabael Benedict (aka just "Sabael") met with foul play somewhere near Puffer Pond southeast of the town of Indian Lake, and George Marshall was cremated upon his passing. I've visited the purported sites of the King Hendrick and Sabael deaths but obviously wasn't able to pinpoint the exact locations of their burials, and I'm certainly not going to bother the Marshall family regarding George.

One last note on the list... I have included both the father (Sabael) and the son (Lewis Elijah Benedict) on the list because it's not exactly clear to me which one Sebille was named for though I'm leaning toward the father. Also, the name Sebille was used informally but I chose to include it because the stories behind these two individuals are so interesting.

So that leaves Esther. Poor Esther. I hate to disappoint all of you but the tale of Esther McComb may just be apocryphal. The short story on this is that no researcher or historian can positively confirm her existence. This was covered at length in "The Lure of Esther" by Sandra Weber and "Heaven Up'Histed'ness" by the 46ers. I won't go into much detail other than I trusted the research others had done and did not go on the wild goose chase of trying to find her myself. The tale is great. The mythology will live on but there probably never was an Esther. Therefore, I have no burial information for her though her name remains on my list. I'm just going to count the summit plaque on the mountain named in her honor as my documentation.

So phase one is complete. But is there a phase two of doing something with all of the information I have gathered? Honestly, I'm not sure. Perhaps I could write a book? Between all the pictures, cemetery maps, information on the burials, and some interesting stories on the later lives of these people I probably could put together 100-150 pages rather easily. But it is such a niche topic who would buy or read such a book? Or maybe I'll throw the info out there on a web site? At the very least I'll write it all up in some form. At least one County Historian I spoke with expressed interest in having a copy of my completed research. Perhaps others would as well. But I thought I'd share the abridged version of my work here first.

If anybody notices a glaring omission or error on my part please let me know. I believe I have identified all of the relevant names/people but it's possible I have not. I won't be insulted with any corrections or additions you all might suggest. PLEASE message me if you discover something I missed. If anybody wants specific directions to any of the graves I would be happy to share the information. Just shoot me a message.

Link to a Google Photos album of all of the graves. A few pics per name...
https://photos.app.goo.gl/G55xkjn5oTb79uYUA

And for those who wish to continue reading on the subject here are some highlights of what I found along the way. Just a few stories and pieces of trivia that might interest you...

I have shared the story on the forum in the past about the time I cleaned the headstone of Old Mountain Phelps ( https://www.adkhighpeaks.com/forums/...f-orson-phelps). Out of respect for the folks who live next to the cemetery I will not share exact directions to get there but it was the most difficult cemetery to find out of all of the ones on the list.

The story of Verplanck Colvin's death and burial are a bit heart-breaking. It ties in with his lifelong friendship with Mills Blake who he knew since childhood. Colvin enlisted Blake's help with the Adirondack Survey and the two men worked, and lived, together until Colvin's death. Blake took care of his friend until the very end. Colvin had set aside a spot right next to his own in the family plot for Blake to be buried in. Later protests from Colvin family members prevented Blake from being buried where Verplanck Colvin had desired and the headstone intended for Blake remains blank to this day. Instead, Mills Blake lies in eternal rest just a few miles away from his lifelong friend in a different cemetery. Blake is buried beneath a very modest grave marker only labeled with his name in the plot of a family friend.

The details of Ebenezer Emmons' burial, or more accurately... burials, is the perhaps the most difficult to unwind of all of the people on the list. He died in 1863 in North Carolina and was buried in City Cemetery in Raleigh. Sometime later his remains were removed and reburied in Albany, NY. However, his name also appears on monument in a family plot in the town of Middlefield, MA, where he was born. Essentially, this is a cenotaph. A cenotaph is a headstone, marker, or monument honoring a person whose remains are buried elsewhere. That monument is identical in size and shape to the one in Albany Rural Cemetery but the date of death on it is incorrect. Rather than the correct 10/1/1863 it reads 10/1/1864. A bit bizarre. I have yet to figure out the discrepancy. And as far as I call tell Emmons is the only one on my list with a cenotaph.

Alexander Macomb is buried in the most interesting cemetery on the list by a long shot - the Congressional Cemetery in Washington DC. I recommend a visit the next time you are in the nation's capital. It is not a tourist trap by any means and I had the grounds all to myself when I visited. Besides the actual burials of countless politicians there are rows and rows of cenotaphs as well.

Bob Marshall is buried in Brooklyn. The Marshall family plot in Salem Fields Cemetery is directly behind the Guggenheim family mausoleum. This is of some interest as the Marshall family camp at Knollwood on Lower Saranac Lake had numerous other prominent families maintain cottages there as well. Among them were the Guggenheims.

A few years before William Nye died and "feeling the infirmities of old age creeping upon him" he went to live with his sister in Vermont. He met a tragic end in a house fire that started in the middle of the night. Attempts to rescue him from the upper room where he slept were unsuccessful.

Two of the people on the list are buried in unmarked graves - Alfred Street and John Adams Dix. Street's unmarked grave is next to his wife's marked grave in Albany Rural Cemetery. Not sure which side of the headstone Street is buried, left or right, but cemetery records indicate he is there. Today as I was compiling this information I could not find my pictures for Street and had to drive back to Albany Rural Cemetery to take new ones. Luckily just a minor hiccup as the cemetery is just a few miles away. John Adams Dix is buried in Trinity Churchyard in Lower Manhattan about fifty feet from Alexander Hamilton. Cemetery records and old photos show a headstone for Dix however it was removed or missing the day I visited to photograph it. Therefore, his grave is now unmarked.

Archibald McIntyre is buried in a large family plot in Albany Rural Cemetery along with his wife, several of his children, and two of his son-in-laws: James MacNaughton and David Henderson. You may recognize those names. MacNaughton Mountain was named for James MacNaughton and the Henderson Monument along Calamity Brook marks the spot where David Henderson died of an accidental gunshot wound in 1845.

And finally, here's some trivia about the various gravesites. I will just share info on the 23 names (only 22 if you exclude Esther) attached to the 24 presently named High Peaks. If you hadn't figured it out by now, Dix's name appears on two peaks.

Burials by state: NY - 17, MA - 2 plus one cenotaph, VT - 1, CT - 1, DC - 1

Burials within the Blue Line: 2 - Orson Phelps and Alfred Lee Donaldson

Buried outside of the Blue Line but closest to the Blue Line:
Thomas Armstrong - 2.5 miles
Franklin Hough - 9.3 miles
Silas Wright - 10.3 miles

Person buried nearest the peak named for them:
Orson Phelps - 7.7miles
Alfred Lee Donaldson - 12.7 miles
Average distance - 142 miles

Person buried furthest from the peak named for them:
Alexander Macomb - 393 miles

Death furthest in the past: Alexander Macomb (1841)

Most recent death: Grace Hudowalksi (2004)

Oldest: Grace Hudowalski (98)
Youngest: Bob Marshall (38)

Hope you found all of this of some interest. Thanks for reading.

Waders?

Hi all... as we are in the middle of winter, I am thinking about spring fishing. I am going to need some waders as last summer and fall I waded out in hiking pants and Keen Sandals (sturdy, but FREEZING in October and I won't be trying that with snow melt in April!).
So, I have a very rocky bottom, some big boulders and deep holes with a lot of basketball size and smaller rocks. I have heard that studded boots are better than felt? Do they come with the boot attached or is it a separate purchase?
Thanks for the help...any suggestions or opinions appreciated.

Spectacle Lake and Goodluck Cliffs - 1/2/20

We hiked into Spectacle Lake and Goodluck Cliffs a couple of days after the ice storm. Trail conditions were a mixture of snow and ice with many open water spots in the trail. We used snowshoes and micro spikes. There were some trees and branches blocking the trail in places, but overall conditions were not too bad.

It was an absolutely beautiful day in the woods with the blue sky and the ice/snow on the trees. I really enjoy the trail between Goodluck and Spectacle Lakes, it is quite narrow and the woods are nice with interesting topography. We did not venture very far out on the ice on either of the lakes.

Things got a little wet as the ice melted off of the trees in the bright sun. A couple of photos from the trip are below. We saw lots of power company trucks and tree trimming on our drive home.

MLK Weekend hiking (am I hosed?), need options for good and bad weather

I'm going up for a hike with some friends on Sunday the 19th. I know it's gonna be crowded there. I would like to have two or 3 options. Would like to hike no more than 10 miles.

Already done whiteface, cascade, giant, porter, big slide so those are not options.

Would like option 1 to be if the weather is nice and perhaps a scenic summit hike?

Would like option 2 to be if the weather is mean and thus would like something with some good tree cover till the summit and in this situation i could care less about the view at the top because there won't be any with the weather being bad.

Stipulation, all hiking options need to have decent parking. I'm ok getting started at 6am in the dark if needed to beat the crowds but let me know what time you think I should get there.

White Mountains Forum

Didn't know where to put this request, but I have been searching for a forum dedicated to the White Mountains but haven't had any luck finding one. This forum for the Adirondacks is amazing, but wanted to explore the Whites a bit.

Hello semua, nak tanya pendapat semua. Saya inshaAllah bulan 5 aku tunaikan umrah. So saya ada nampak dkt fb digi ada simkad untuk umrah. Tapi okay ke dia punya line dkt sana? Sbb kalau dekat malaysia pun digi teruk gak. Ada ke telco lain yg dkt malaysia buat simkad for umrah?

History of Mount Adams - beyond the fire tower

Below is a link to a paper I just completed after a couple years of research, which delves into the history of Mt Adams (apart from the tower) and its name origin. In particular:

* More thoroughly addressed for whom it was named, and establishing a stronger connection for the naming
* Effectively address the other alleged names for Mt Adams
* Include never-before-published photos of the log chute off Mt Adams

Hike up Stewart

I took advantage of the lack of snow to bare-boot up about 1/2 mile towards Stewart from Rte 86 last Sunday the 29th. Upon gaining elevation I donned my trusty MCRs and fought the brush higher up. Mercifully I was able to skirt most of the boulders and their weak moss bridges... all I needed was to fall between a couple large rocks with a broken leg waiting for rescue in who-know-how long! :) But the weather was fine, the snow firm and all was well. Summit reached before noon and a leisurely stroll back to my car.

An 8-hour hike up a mountain with zero evidence of any other human being and great views of Whiteface across the valley between peaks. Love the ADKs!

Happy New Year! (BTW, if anyone wants to join me I have about 20 of the Hundred Highest left. It'll be fun!!)
