Deer Leap, LGWF, 30 Mar, 2017

Tredhed and I took advantage of another nice Thursday (three in a row for us ) for a short hike to Deer Leap in the Lake George Wild Forest. Neither of us have ever been here before, so it was kind of exciting to try a new trail. We kept "Banker's Hours" and arrived at the well plowed Rt. 9N trailhead around 9:30.

We quickly donned our micro-spikes and headed up the icy trail. The first 300' uphill section was on some nicely graded CCC trails through open hardwoods.

The trail was sparsely marked with disks dating from the Johnson Administration.

We soon passed the junction for 5 Mile Mt. and crossed the height of land. The change in the forest was drastic. Tall hardwoods changed to gnarly oaks in less than 100 yds. Nice views to the south opened up, giving us our first look at Lake George.

The trail wound up and down a little bit through the open woods and was easy to follow in the mid morning sun.

After about an hour of walking, we came to the end of the trail and a great view of Spruce Mt.

We then worked our way downhill and to the south to pick up some nice views of Black and Erebus Mts.

After a water break and some more exploring, we started to work our way back to the trail. On the way down, there was a filtered view of the cliffs on Bloomer Mt. I know some ADK Forum members have been up there. What a cool looking ledge. :)

Soon enough, we were back at the trailhead and headed off to the Prospect Mt. Diner in Lake George for some comfort food. A nice endcap to a great morning in the woods. Thanks to Tredhed for driving and for some great pictures.
