Today, I decided to take advantage of a lull at work and a nice weather forecast to re-live some teenage memories and go ice fishing at Cod Pond in the Wilcox Lake Wild Forest. Back in the day, this was something my friends and I did a couple times a year and we always had fun. Today it was just me in the woods and on the ice.
The icy ride up Rt. 8 caused me to worry about the dirt parking lot being plowed out. Fortunately, things were great as I pulled up to the trailhead.

The ice covered sign was just an omen of things to come on the trail. There was about an inch of slushy ice/snow over a good base. The trail had been broken out a few days before, but was dripping with melting ice.

I was happy to see that, thanks to saabrian's note to the DEC (http://ift.tt/2jlexFB), there were plenty of red disks on the Oregon Trail and yellow disks on the Cod Pond trail.
They even put up a nice sign at the confusing junction.

The trail was in great shape with no major blow down and soon I arrived at the shore of Cod Pond.

A steady breeze helped to cool me off as I drilled through about 14" of good ice to set my spread.

I had a relaxing three hours chasing flags and enjoying the view of Harrington Mt.

Soon enough, it was time to pack it in and head down the trail. On the way back, I noticed millions of snow fleas attracted to my morning snowshoe tracks. I thought that was pretty cool. At the trail register, I noticed a group of six skiers signed in heading to "North Bend and beyond". What a great day to be skiing the old Oregon Trail. What a great day to be out in the woods reminiscing about childhood memories.
