Short Hike, WLWF, 17 Mar, 2017

Tredhed and I did a short, unplanned hike in the western Wilcox Lake Wild Forest this morning. The conditions were absolutely perfect for a short walk in the woods.

When we started out, the only tracks on the road were deer tracks.

We cut into the woods through a stately grove of large pines.

And skirted a hemlock swamp.

After 20 minutes of bushwhacking through 2' of snow, we came to the yet untraveled snowmobile trail.

The 36" Havelock's really came in handy as we broke trail for about a mile or so on the snowmobile trail.

We left a nice trail for the snowmobilers to follow this weekend.

On the way back to the car, we had a great view of the local pond.

As well as a nice little hill in the "neighborhood".

I can't think of a better way to spend a couple hours in the woods than taking a short walk around some familiar ground. Tredhed and I had a ball and turned it up to 11 when we stopped off at Sport Island Pub in Northville for a pint of Druther's IPA and some Corned Beef and Cabbage. We toasted in remembrance of our grandmother's trek from the Emerald Isle to the sunny shores of New York.
