11th Mtn - E Branch Sacandaga 1-6-17

The area had 12+ inches of consolidated snow with crusty surface, except for the .5” of fresh powder. The main trail was well packed from both SS and some past skier(s). The rise from the Rt 8 parking was mostly well covered with snow but some periodic ice/wet/leaves. Microspikes fine. The descent W to the E Branch Sac was crusty and while I skied two gentler sections, it wasn’t worth it. Some tough crossings near the bottom (panic stop alert). Some breakable crust just off trail, but skis stayed on top (no speed control). This is a tough descent on skis even with good conditions with limited trail width and some gully like sections.

My hope for better skiing once at the river was not to be. Switched to SSs and bushwhacked up to the S face of the cliffs. Ended up easier to wear only microspikes except for pure uphill. Sank 4-5 inches. One set of ski tracks went N off the main trail and I followed a bit before heading more E uphill.

Enjoyed sunshine and no wind. First time exploring the cliffs and will have to go back. It will take 4-6” of new snow to make this marginally skiable again. Can’t recommend it now for skiing. Saw no one else.
