I did a bushwhack hike of this pair on yesterday from the Black Mountain trailhead on Pike Pond Road.
The land west of Sugarloaf Mountain used to be privately owned, but now is State land. Sugarloaf is impressive, with a ring of cliffs all the way around it. We found access to the top from the the NW corner. Great views of Lake George. We also saw a Barred Owl and got a great picture of it.
From there we bushwhacked NW through nice open woods to Elephant Mountain. We passed 3 nice little waterfalls along the way. Elephant lies just SW of Hulett's Landing on the east shore of Lake George. There is an informal path from the town to the summit. Just a few steps NW from the true summit there are nice views of the lake.
Lastly, we headed over to a small bump that is west of Elephant Mountain, that my wife Leesa called "Elephants Peanut". From a ledge just below the bump, we were treated to great views of the Narrows and some of the Mother Bunch Islands.
We did a loop by climbing the shoulder of Black Mountain and then contouring around the mountain at 2000' until we reached the Black Mountain trail. We had an easy 1.5 mile walk out from there.
