Both Ross and I have been desperate to fish. The weather has not exactly cooperated. Yesterday was the 40th day of continuously below freezing weather here in VT so when today's forecast was for a balmy 35, we bit.
I was not hopeful about finding sufficient open water. Ross had a key idea: Which USGS gauges were still reading? Go there and see. So we did. There's a favorite section of Otter Creek where the gauge was working and we know there are good numbers of fish.
It was a good move. The whole section was clear except for some small ice shelves on the sides. Ross was down there and had a fish on before I was even rigged and ready. He's become the king of Euro style nymphing and took a 'bow on a size 18 Chironomid.
We lasted about 2 hours. The fishing was slow, as we had expected. Both of us got grabs but no more tight connections. That was just fine.
