Small insects on the snow?

Hey All,



We had a gorgeous hike to Avalanche Lake yesterday. While taking in the sun at Marcy Dam we noticed that the snow was covered with thousands upon thousands of tiny black insects. They were probably everywhere but I just thought they were black specks until we actually stopped and noticed that they were moving.



Does anybody know what they are?
