Tredhed and I decided to take advantage of the good weather this morning and take a short hike into Stewart Creek Flow in the Wilcox Lake Wild Forest. Filtered sunshine greeted us as we arrived at the trailhead on Rt. 8
We were pleased to see several sets of snowshoe tracks heading up the old Oregon Trail. Once we arrived at the register, a few hundred yards up the trail, the tracks turned right to Cod Pond. We continued straight on the well packed, but not recently traveled route to Stewart Creek.
Snowshoes kept us well above the 2' base that looks like it's going to be in the woods for a while.
Just after the height of land, we descended slightly to the banks of the Stewart Creek as it flowed through a flooded vly.
A few hundred yards later, we arrived at the snowmobile bridge over the creek. I thought the view of the rapids downstream was rather nice.
While Tredhed experimented with some new lenses and filters for his camera, I took off up the trail to find an old hunting campsite
There, I had some great views of Stewart Creek Flow, Cod Pond and Moose Mt. in the distance.
While working my way back down the flow, I spotted some old iron left over from the logging days.
For such a short hike, we really saw some neat stuff and enjoyed ourselves immensely. The walkout was equally enjoyable as we noted at least five large "V" formations of geese heading north. A couple of song sparrows at creekside confirmed that even though there was still 2' of snow on the ground, spring is here.
