Early Encounter Between Satsuma Samurai and Foreign Sailors

This article was in the paper a few years ago and I saved it thinking I would translate it at some point. While cleaning out some files the other day I found it again and finally managed to get it done.

It is very interesting (and salty!)

Cows were the spark that set off a heroic battle between English and the Satsuma forces on an island

Hearing of Tokuno Shima Island and Takara Shima Island part of the Tokara chain of islands, due to the problems surrounding the proposed move of the Futenma Air Base caused me to remember something. Takara Shima Island is the place where Anglo Saxon and Japanese first fought. Previously, I recall making a copy of some related historical documents. Upon searching I found “State of Satsu Takara Shima English Vessel Station Log.”

To believe that Japanese first realized the military superiority of the West upon the arrival of Perry in 1853 would be an error. Beginning around 1800 foreign vessels frequently appeared in the waters around Japan. As the various Han experienced this threatening presence, they began to become aware of what the West was capable of. First was in 1808 when the English battleship Phaeton sailed into Nagasaki Harbour. With this the Saga Han became aware of the West. In May of 1824 in Otsu Bay of Hitachi no Kuni Englishmen came ashore. And with that the whole of Mito Han changed. In July of that same year Englishmen came ashore on the State of Satsuma’s Takara Shima island. They ended up trading fire with Samurai of the Satsuma Han, and the Satsuma Han came face to face with the threat posed by western powers. The Bakufu Government, alarmed at what had transpired issued a decree banning all foreign ships, beginning the “Jyoi,”or expel the foreigners, attitude amongst the Bushi class.

On peaceful Takara Shima Englishmen and people of Satsuma engaged in battle? It ended up like this. “July Eighth. Early Afternoon. 10am. Western Takara Shima.” A white sail came into view. The next day, the ship dropped anchor about a half Ri, or two kilometers, off shore and seven or eight foreign people boarded a small boat and came ashore. The man dispatched by Satsuma Han to oversee the island was Tsumeyokome Yoshimurakyujyo, so he and other government officials went to meet them. “The appearance of the people from foreign lands” was “Fierce in aspect” standing some “Six Shaku or more (180cm)” in height with “Pronounced, big noses and coloring much like Japanese.”

Yoshimura and company used “Hand gestures and whatnot to ask what country they were from” and received a reply of “We all come from The United Kingdom. “Words like Holland and Nagasaki were understandable” to them but the document written in horizontal characters was completely unintelligible. Attempts at conversing through written Japanese also proved fruitless. Using gestures the Japanese asked “How many are aboard your vessel?”and “As he used his right and left hands to make a seven,” Yoshimura presumed there were “Seventy or more aboard ship.” The Englishmen then asked enthusiastically if “They could have one of the cows” grazing nearby. The Japanese returned with vegetables and other foodstuffs but said “We won’t part with our cattle.” This caused somewhat of a difficult time in the interaction, but eventually they returned to their ship. The next day however they returned and gestured “We would really like to obtain one of your cows!” The English then proceeded to offer “Distilled alcohol, wheat converted into a kind of candy (bread and cookies) and transferrables like gold, silver, clothing as well as knives scissors and watches seeking to trade for a cow. Yoshimura demurred with “No deal” and offered rice and vegetables. “We have no need of rice but we will take all the vegetables.” Which they did and left.

However, about four hours later the sound of a cannon was heard. The English had launched “Three small boats with some 20 odd people aboard, armed with rifles and firing at such a rate as there was never a musket ball not in the air.” They then came ashore. The islanders “Men, women, old and young were all thrown in to the most awful panic” and everyone ran for the mountains. Yoshimura, being a military strategist decided to return fire. A certain Honda Jonosuke who was serving out his banishment on the island was also pressed into service. In addition to this were twelve or thirteen islanders, thus began a small war between a dozen Japanese against twenty Englishmen.

That being said the islanders had no idea how to fight. Yoshimura considered “A head on battle would not likely lead to success.” And “We need to quiet things down.” Thus he decided to lie in wait and fire upon them unexpectedly. On the other hand the Englishmen were whalers and new to fighting themselves. The group of twenty was spread out, with a group of three approaching Yoshimura’s residence. Yoshimura waited until they were within “Three Ken (less than six meters) I fired a bullet weighing two and a quarter Monme (8 grams) from a musket into the chest of one of the three seemed to be the leader. The bullet “Struck him in the center of the chest and passed through out of his back.” That Englishman died instantly. Upon seeing this the remaining two Englishmen “Ran off in opposite directions,” shooting in all directions. One bullet went past Yoshimura’s ear, but tragedy was avoided. Yoshimura prepared for another attack by the British but on the 11th “there was no sign of the sailboat.” The English ship had gone.

長い航海で英国人は新鮮な牛肉を欲し、この戦いが起きた。異国人の死骸はどうなったか。「塩漬け致し鹿児島 に差送り」と古文書にはある。(日本史家)

After a long voyage the English desired fresh cow meat, which ended up being the cause of this skirmish. What then happened to the foreigner’s body? “It was packed in salt and sent to Kagoshima” as recorded in an old document.

Would I be stupid to leave my school?

I used to study Chinese martial arts and am currently studying Taekwondo. My Taekwondo teacher is extremely skilled in multiple martial arts, but I've always been extremely interested in the combat aspects of Tai Chi and have recently found a school near me which teaches Tai Chi from a combat perspective and encourages active sparring and hard drilling moves, as well as competition. I also train 4 times a week currently, and would only be able to train 2-3 times a week at the Tai Chi school.

I know that I would become a great fighter under my current teacher, but I'm extremely interested in the Tai Chi school. I can only afford one. Would it be smarter to stay where I am where I'm guaranteed to get good training or to follow my interests?

What can i expect?

Well as some may know, I am a new student(2 months training) of judo and karate.

Well I apparently joined at the worst time as my dojo just fell apart and is over. Well the judo leader ship is discussing were to go for a training space and will contact us soon so we can continue training.

However, karate is done for.

After I left the Bujinkan, I researched most of the available martial arts in my are and the 3 Korean styles have the best teachers.(imho)

I have my first KKW TKD(mudokwan) with Master Cunningham Monday. I could have gone to Hapkido or Tang So Do under a C.S. Kim affiliate but I wanted to try the same martial art my father did as a young man. Which saved his life many times on the streets.

So, What do you guys think I can expect? I would imagine the basics would be similar to the karate basics I practice now? I was watching the forms and they seem simple compared to karate forms. I wonder what the point of them is?

He teaches both traditional and sportive TKD. If I remember correctly he also has a black belt in judo and some training in a hard style of kung fu whose name I cant remember.

What kind of feeling will tkd have? Does traditional tkd, do the same kind of bone conditioning that karate does?

Im short, will I be screwed in sparring?

Do TKD people actually know how to punch and defend with there hands?

I intend to ask these questions on Monday, but I figured id ask you guys here.

If you have any advice id love to hear it. Thanks guys.

Camp sites near upper works?

I was planning on hiking Allen this weekend, and I was wondering if there were any roadside or easy access camp sites in the Upper Works area? It doesn't have to be right at the trailhead, but anything within an easy drive would be helpful. The closer the better. Nothing fancy, just some place to pitch a tent and sleep the night.

Help me plan a 7 day Glacier NP trip!

My cousin has a seasonal job in Yellowstone NP, cleaning facilities at Old Faithful.

I spoke to him about meeting him in the early fall and doing a road / car camping trip in and around Glacier NP.

Many of you know that I prefer backcountry but I think this first trip would be better as a "scouting" kind of trip in which I try to see a little of it all...and maybe I'll have a favorite area in the end and focus on doing a backcountry trip in that area next time.

What I'd like to do is try to start at the northwest part of the park (Bowman Lake?) and then take the better part of a week camping somewhere different every night, while I "zigzag around"...working my way to the northeast part of the park and then southeast and back towards Bozeman, where we hope to find a place to leave a car.

We hope to see a lot from the road, and maybe we can get in some short hikes to extraordinary spots.

Here's a catch - since I can't do backcountry, at a minimum I'd like to go to places and camp at campgrounds that are remote and off the beaten path.

Can you help me put together an itinerary? (Night one in the northwest part of park, final night in southeast part)

I'm looking at either the first week in September or the third week in September - are there advantages to one or the other?

Thanks.

McKenzie and Moose Mountains

We started on the Jackrabbit Trail, parking at the trailhead on the Whiteface Inn Road. This ascends easily for a while. There is a steep section going up McKenzie Mountain on the Red trail. Great views on McKenzie in two directions – from separate ledges.

(The day before the hike, I scouted Chipmunk Lane, from which the Lake Shore trail could be previously accessed. There is a sign there which states: THIS AREA IS PRIVATE PROPERTY. FORMER LAKE TRAIL NOT OPEN TO PUBLIC USE. Looking down to the lake, I saw that a property owner has erected a 7’ stockade fence all the way down to the water. So much for my plan to climb McKenzie on the Lake Shore trail and the Bartlett Pond trail. On to Plan B.)

From McKenzie to Moose Mountain, the trail is in GREAT shape. Well marked with S.O.A. (Shore Owners Association) markers, and with distance and view signs. It is like hiking on the ridge of the Dixes 40 years ago. The nicest trail I have hiked on for a long time. Great views from Moose, especially of Lake Placid, with one ledge looking east, and another looking west.

There are two steep trails down Moose to the south. We took the Loch Bonnie trail because we wished to see this pond. In retrospect, it would have saved a great deal of time if we had descended by the Two Brooks trail. But then we would have missed Loch Bonnie.

Loch Bonnie is a gem. Well worth visiting and exploring. See if you can find the spring which comes up through the tall grass. It has the saddest-looking leanto – part of which would be welcome in a downpour.

The 0.3 mile link trail between the Loch Bonnie trail and the Two Brooks trail is almost completely overblown with large trees. By the time we climbed out of the lake bowl, the trail completely disappeared in the field of blowdown. We bailed out to the right (west) and picked up the Two Brooks trail coming down from Moose. I wonder if this trail can be restored.

The Two Brooks trail is in pretty good shape after the Loch Bonnie link trail. We took it SW and S to the intersection with the Bartlett Pond trail.

To return to the car, we bushwhacked south on state land for a half hour – through open hardwood forest.

The whole loop took us 9-1/2 hours. This includes 90 minutes for lounging on summits and exploring Loch Bonne – both worthwhile pursuits.

A huge round of thanks and a standing ovation to the gentleman who restored and maintains the S.O.A. trails. It is evidently a gargantuan labor of love.

Twenty Ninth Pond

Anyone know what kind of fish (if any) are in Twentyninth Pond near Minerva? Looking to do some fishinging/kayaking in the area and it looks like a decent spot.

PM if you have any info you don't want to share publicly.

Fall is in the air, or I wished it was.

Unseasonably cool, raining for days, and Mosquitos are biting like crazy. Feels like early bear season. Took out the 30-06 tonight to practice and rezero the scope.

Video for discussion

OK so I don't have any coin in this game any more. At this point I don't teach any longer, dojo is closed etc etc.

I haven't done any cross training with other groups for some time as well

Now for discussion., this person was cooked here for a while. I would admit to being biased at one point. Now would just like some open minded discussion on technique.

Camp sites near Catlin Bat leantos on Long Lake?

I'm going with some friends this weekend and our planning has been pretty last minute. Coming from Rochester, NY.

I've never been to these lean-tos, but have always had them stashed in the back of my mind as a quick place to hike to in the evening or at night as a quick place to stay, then getting back to the car in the morning to continue on going north-east farther into the the park. It looks like something like this might be happening. *sigh*

If by chance these lean tos are filled out with people are there any official camp sites on the way from RT 28N where the NPT crosses 28N or near the leantos?

Thanks!

Custom Rash Guards for No-Gi competion?

My kids both were hoping to use the same or similar artwork that they use for their wrestling singlets for their rash guards for no-gi BJJ competition. Does anyone know of a company that will make them?

Carl Froch said he wouldn't want to fight Golovkin

The Cobra said he is "to dangerous" lol. This is interesting since Golovkin has yet to fight a true elite fighter... I'm not doubting his skill and ability to beat an elite, but just in general. Martinez looked good until he got in with Cotto too.

http://ift.tt/1mZIeoI

WBA and IBF world champion in the super middleweight division Carl Froch wants to avoid fighting Gennady Golovkin.

WBA and IBO world champion from Kazakhstan Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin defended his title against Daniel Geale from Australia this Saturday.

“Just swerve Golovkin like the plague. He punches like a mule. I don’t need to be in with him. Dangerous fight,” Froch, who is in a higher weight division than Golovkin said.

Mull or not, but Golovkin wrecked Geale in the third round with a TKO and brought his KO ration to 90%.

In the meantime, Golovkin is not planning to move up to a higher weight division. After winning Geale, Golovkin challenged Miguel Cotto and Peter Quillin. The Kazakhstani boxer said that he wanted to unify the titles in the middleweight category. “Golovkin will be a guy who is going to be tough to beat. I’m not sure that there’s too many guys out there that are going to give him too much of a run. Good luck to the guys who can and I’d love to get another opportunity one day,” Geale said after the fight.

Pharoah Lake with kids?

Hello All!

I am a competent hiker and camper with some mild foot and knee injuries. I am contemplating a hike into Pharaoh Lake with my boy and girl, 9 and 11 respectively, to try and snag one of the lean-tos to watch the Perseid meteor shower in a couple of weeks.

So: injuries/solo hike with kids = needing to keep things as sweet and simple as possible. Looks like the approach that fits this bill is from Beaver Pond/Pharoah Road. My Dacks-experienced friend recommends driving as far as possible before the road becomes impassable, and bringing water shoes for a submerged section of trail close to the beginning.

Any other advice from the experts? Thanks!

Seventh Lake Trail Conditions or Recommendations?

Hi everyone! I'm from WNY but moved to Houston and haven't been to ADKS in 5+ years. I will be heading back in early September with my boyfriend who has no backpacking experience. I planned on heading out to the Seventh Lake trail, and (hopefully) landing one of the lean to's. I've taken this trail many times before. Using my ADK book as a guide, I always park at what looks like an abandoned bail shop off of 13/Seventh Lake Road, and then hike in (via the southwest side of the lake), but my book is ancient and I don't know if this parking spot still exists, or the condition of the trail in general. Can anyone offer any information about this?

I'm also open to suggestions for other places to go (that would have campsite and/or lean-to options, and be acceptable for a first timer with little experience). Thanks!

Hammond Pond W.F. - Pine Pond 7/26

I tried to do a search here and the internet in general about Pine Pond and really couldn’t come up with anything. Now I know why; finding the start of this path is really, really hard so I’m sure not many have hiked it. The hike is outlined in McMartin’s Discover the Eastern Adirondacks. She says the hardest part is finding the start and she’s not kidding. The directions she gives are to drive east on CR4 (Ensign Pond Road) from the intersection of NY 9 which is just north of North Hudson. Drive for 5.5 miles or 0.3 miles from an old stone town-line marker painted white on the right-hand side of the road. She says to look for a red paint daub on a large tree that stands 20 feet from the road. Well, first off, my car’s odometer doesn’t do tenths. Secondly the red paint daub or blaze was nowhere to be seen. After driving along somewhere between 5 and 6 miles I spotted a car parked on the opposite (left) side of the road so I figured there’s gotta be a reason someone parked at that particular spot so I pulled over, got out and poked around at the periphery of the woods. Sure enough there was a faint path that I investigated for about 50 yards to make sure it was what I was looking for and not just an area worn down by serial urinators.

Confident I had found the path, I got my day pack and continued on. It was a nice, somewhat warm day and the mosquitoes were minimal. It’s only 1.6 miles to the pond with a net descent of 160 feet. This is a really pleasant path, going through hemlock and balsam at first then as one climbs a bit, pines dominate. McMartin comments a few times that this is a path and not a trail and that some time will likely be spent searching for it when encountering blow downs or such. No red paint was to be seen, but the path, while faint in a spot or two, was pretty distinct and posed no problem to even this somewhat newbie hiker. There is one small stream crossing that was easy to rock hop across, but in high water a dry crossing would likely not be possible. In about 50 minutes I came to the northeast end of Pine Pond. It really is a beautiful pond and larger than I supposed. Looking at a map it’s about the same size as Hammond Pond just to the southwest. There was a rowboat at the end of the path with oars, it looked to be in semi-decent shape.

I didn’t have time to explore too much, but the woods around the lake are pretty open and the slope to the water is fairly moderate. It looked like there would be some good camping possibilities on the opposite side of the pond among some high, somewhat exposed terrain.

After a snack and some relaxation I headed back at a relaxed pace, with a stop at a beaver pond just off the path. I was back at the car in just under an hour. I’ll definitely be back here now that I know where the heck this is, I’d love to try an overnight on the western shore. If that other car hadn’t been parked directly opposite the start of the faint path, there is no way in hell I would have ever found this. A big red daub on a tree right off the road would be a big help; maybe the locals don’t want to advertise this hidden gem.

Josh Thompson

I gotta say, I like the guys style. Very good movement, a lot of nice, fluid combinations, mixes things up well. His fight Saturday was very entertaining even if he lost... close fight anyway.

I've seen about 3 or 4 of his fights and always did like all of the above things. Thoughts? I also liked watching the Masvidal fight. I am more partial to guys who box more yes... but he controlled the entire fight Saturday save for going down like a sack of rocks from a straight right... didn't panic, just got up and went right back at it lol.

Adkforum Member Memorial

Hi friends,

Just curious how everyone would feel about maybe starting an "Adkforum member memorial" thread to honor and remember the members of this forum that are unfortunately no longer with us anymore.

I know that I can name a few members that have been very helpful in the past whom still often cross my mind, including one member that I was fortunate enough to meet on the trail once before, and a couple others I wish that I had.

I don't want to name any names just yet, but maybe this could provide an opportunity to pay our respects to our fallen friends here on Adkforum, when otherwise we may have been unaware of their passing.

Perhaps we could also extend such a memorial to include our four legged companions as well.

Or is this a corny idea and not really necessary?

BJA or BJC?

So I've two Judo clubs to choose from.

One's BJA and the other BJC.

I've been down to the BJA one and enjoyed it immensely.

Not tried the BJC one.

Is there any differences?

The BJC one is a bit closer to my house but only by 10 minutes or so.

The only down side of the BJA club I've been to is that it was mainly mid-late teen boys and guys over 50. One session is far to early to really judge a club but that was my first impression.

Training times are very similar so there's not much to choose on that front.

this might be interesting...

visually it seems to be pretty good, thematically it seems to follow the modern premise of making everything extra grimdark, story-wise pretty much nothing is let slip so dunno (welcome change from trailers that spoil half the movie though). whether it lives up to the originals... we shall see.

Total beginner boat choice? Inflatable?

Short background. I'm looking to get into kayaking both with the family including myself my wife and my 6 year old and any combination of the three of us including myself solo. I have no equipment and live in a small apartment. It seems like a convertible inflatable kayak would be a good choice along with a solo kayak to accommodate the full family. But I'm not sure how inflatables hold up to rocks/trees or anything else I will likely run into as a beginner. Something like this caught my attention.

http://ift.tt/1tQR3qy

Is this a horrible idea in the Adirondacks because it's just not sturdy enough to take a beating? I imagine as a beginner I'll be running into all sorts of rocks and underwater pointy things.

As far as where and what i'm looking to do. I think I would mostly enjoy exploring calm rivers/waterways more so then lakes but i'm sure i'll hit some small lakes at some point too.

TLDR: Is an inflatable kayak an ok choice for the Adirondacks for a beginner to explore calm rivers and likely run into stuff because beginner?

Does this canoe exist? Suggestion needed please.

Hello everyone. Just had a quick question that I have been researching, but have not been able to find a definitive answer for...if there is one. I am currently in the market for a canoe, but it needs to be versatile. I have two boys that I would like to bring with me if possible, but also something that I can use myself. I love to fish so this would be its main use but also something that I can bring for a weekend float/ camping adventure. If fishing it will likely be only one of my boys (8 and 12) or just myself. However, if using for float/camping it will likely be all three of us. The thing that I am most worried about is stability when fishing and the weight especially when I am by myself. Not just for loading purposes but for carrying purposes. The only canoe that I have used before was an Old Town and I really enjoyed it. Like I stated earlier, there may not be an answer to the questions that I am asking, but I know there are a lot of experienced people on the forum and was just looking for some guidance. Thank you!

Differences in Cheng 37 step form?

Been looking at the 37 step Cheng Man Ching form and have noticed some slight variation in the movements for example in this video:

http://ift.tt/1tdRkWR

There is at the begining of the form a circular motion (0.11secs) and a litttle later in a backwards kick (0.54secs) which I notice is not in the video below:

They are both listed as Cheng Man Ching 37 step, is there more than one version or is it a case of people adding/removing stuff from the form?

How much further would one have to go to find a "wilder" place than the Adirondacks?

How much further would one have to go to find a "wilder" place than the Adirondacks?

I'll define wilder as bigger, undeveloped, a wider variety of fauna and flora and minimal or near zero logging.

For example, northern Maine doesn't count because, from what I understand, less of it is truly protected from logging and development.

We are probably talking Canada, but they allow logging in many parks don't they?

Which parks prohibit logging?

Rickson's around the world in 7 days

As you all may Know Rickson Gracie (the man Jesus prays to at night) is currently on a media tour to promote his new federation, and get the focus back on the community, the teachers and competators of the art, instead of how much money the IBJJF can take from everybody and not give back.

I thought it might stimulate discussion here to post some of the interviews and instructionals, as they feature a lot of well known personality's and have some very valid points for discussion.

Being that it is a promotional tour, I wouldn't normally post threads like this on MAP, but as there such good discussion points, AND the federation is Free to join for practitioners I thought it should be ok.

Do you punch like bruce Lee

I thought id post this over here after Simon commented on youtube about the bruce lee clip.

Since I started punching I been studying and loved Bruce lee,who hasn't,and this is the way I've always seen him, gifted with speed but trained like no other for technique, obsessive training will bring another level. but nobodies super human and if there hitting harder than anyone else then threes a reason. Their doing something slightly different bio mechanically, this brings me to the first clip of Bruce on the heavy bag this clip that confirmed my thoughts, it shows students (Ted Wong training on the bag) Ted is using an unsupported classic boxing punch like swinging a hammer.but Bruce is using a kinetic punch driving in like a jack hammer, you can see how the drive/bend into the bag is deeper when Bruce hits, this sort of drive you only get with a kinetic punch hes also using a deep snapping shockwave on the end,Im sugesting Bruces punch is a sort of mix of western boxing and karate.

http://ift.tt/1khtpDw

now particularly this clip here and the 6inch punch, you simply cant get that much drive or chest compression with a standard boxing punch.swinging in like a hammer.using the outside of the middle knuckle

Bruce is driving in like a jack hammer, completing the full kinetic chain. The punch hes demonstrating here cannot be thrown in modern boxing gloves because of the thumb position. So boxing gloves teach you a different punch than the one demonstrated by Bruce here.Again a perfect version of a deep snapping shockwave on the end of the punch to complete it,but there is a bit of a push as well

http://ift.tt/1pk7Ctt

This brings me to my clip here explaining the difference in a supported kinetic punch and an unsupported (boxing style) punch. The kinetic punch is a significant step up in power.http://ift.tt/1khtpTK

This clip shows you how to test your style to see what type of punch you throw.Do you hit like a hammer or Jack hammer,by the way its impossible to hit like a jackhammer in modern boxing gloves

http://ift.tt/1khtnvh

Heres Bas Rutten throwing a very nice unsupported punch, notice how the elbow is much lower on the hooks, than the kinetic punch and his style doesnt change with the gloves

http://ift.tt/1pk7ES8

unsupported bare knuckle or boxing punch[IMG] [/IMG]

Supported kineitc punch

[IMG] [/IMG]

it doesnt just come down to the part of the knuckle you land with its on a different angle from the shoulder to the knuckle and the close guard is different to allow for this

Simon asked me on youtube "Karl, isn't this just punching correctly, as opposed to incorrectly?"

The problem with youtube is its hard to discuss in detail

in boxing gloves a boxer can only punch unsupported, the thumb position doesnt allow a fully supported kinetic punch, but I wouldnt say they were punching incorrectly, its just boxing but they are resricted by the glove.

With Bare knuckle or in MMA gloves you get a much stronger option to complete the full kinetic chain which is a much stronger punch. When I looked at your shovel hook/lead hook clip herehttp://ift.tt/1pk7CJT

Your punching unsupported in these clips with the outside of the middle knuckle, breaking the kinetic chain from the shoulder to the knuckle, this is what i call a standard MMA punch (see pic)

There not Kinetic,But I wouldnt call them incorrect. I just put that down to you using a more traditional western boxing stlye punch.

with a kinetic punch youre looking at at least a 40% improvment in power and impact.and much more drive(offbalance)

on top of the style your using now.theres lots of punching styles but only one style, that uses the full kinetic chain.theres only a few clip of Bruce punching like this. But im struggling to find any of his students who use this style, has anyone got any clips of anyone? hope this helps

Some 'Science' for MA, Kicking and QiGong

I found this one quite interesting as to how they assessed kickers from a straight forward Newtonian Mechanics perspective. The QiGong Iron shirt stuff with the spear at the throat I found more difficult to comprehend, but if Fight Science' is objective (not sure), it is an interesting test.

As this attempted to present QiGong in a somewhat more scientific perspective, rather than Bio-pixie fairy tale toothpaste - as fairly often gets spouted on this forum, I did find this Health QiGong vid, presenting somewhat deeper analysis of QiGong, explained in language I can just about understand, rather than the usual Cheesy old splodge. I can dig some of the bio-chemistry discussed, but it is still too cheesy for me, but I am open to rational persuasion.

Essentially, if discussion regarding Qi can be rational and not flowing into nonsense and hyper-twaddle, then I can take interest - can't speak for anyone else.

Sensible analysis of both vids is welcome.

Comparison of Judo and Taijutsu throws?

Hey guys. For someone who is no longer in the org, I find my self thinking about it as much as did while I was still training in it.

Anyways, does anyone know of a video compilation showing the differences between the 40 basic judo throws and the basic Bujinkan throws?(I don't remember how many there are)

Considering how much I struggled with Ganseki nage, I never did manage to get past that throw. (It would be fun to actually learn it and try it in judo randori)

So what are the differences between the two? The context is just to throw someone, not the reason. I don't want this to get bogged down in the battlefield vs Sport thing. Just in the context of one human throwing another.

Do any of you seasoned practitioners have a favorite throw or throws? So far mine is Sasae tsurikomi ashi and o goshi.

Wheel of time analysis: on the nature of the Dark One (spoilers)

A year ago I finished 'Wheel of Time' by Robert Jordan. I liked the complexity of it all, and thought Sanderson tied it up very well (with the exception of a couple of minor loose ends). But after finishing it, I couldn't help but think about the plot and the underlying reality in Randland. So I re-read the last volumes and wrote down my analysis. If there are any WoT afficionados here, I am curious what you may think of my analysis.

Keep in mind that a) this is full of spoilers, and b) this is based on the actual books and what Robert Jordan himself said. My own views of right and wrong / religious views have no relation to this.

Like most people after finishing MoL, I’ve been thinking about whether leaving the DO alive was the right call or not. If the DO is indeed an independent conscious entity, then leaving it alive wasn’t necessary. If on the other hand it was the anthropomorphism of the concepts of chaos and destruction (like the discworld Death), then leaving it alive was necessary. It seems that the latter was indeed the case, which is why Rand did what he did. But that also started me thinking about the nature of the bore.

It’s about balance

Consider the following: at the end of the AoL, the civilization had turned into a regime where even the slightest misbehavior was suppressed by force (using oath rods and binding chairs), and the civilization had evolved to one of extreme pacifism, where even the concept of violence was considered weird. You can see this in the rhuidean flashbacks where the ‘way of the leaf’ was considered the highest standard. They were pressed by solinda to never give up their precious ways.

When the male Aes Sedai went mad, the ridiculousness of their ways was plain for all to see yet they still clung to pacifism. The female Aes Sedai had all the AoL knowledge, and they had all the ter angreal, angreal and sa ‘angreal. They also had the knowledge to use all those things. We know for a fact that they had the access keys to the CK and light knows what else that has now been lost.

But when Jaric Mondoran (TSR 26) went mad in the city of Tzora, did they try to shield him and sever him? No. Did they use any of the AoL goodies they no doubt had available? Strike him with the power? No. Perhaps an arrow to the back then, if no Aes Sedai were available? No. Instead, tens of thousands of Aiel start singing to distract him, not minding at all that they’re killed by the hundreds in order to allow the citizens to flee before he kills the last of them and then commits suicide. And what does solinda say? ‘she asks him to see that the Aiel keep to the Way of the Leaf even if all else is lost’. The amount of sheer patheticness and inability to minimize casualties boggles the mind. At the end of the AoL, the human race had almost evolved to the human equivalent of cattle, unable to make any kind of decision between difficult choices.

Now let’s think about the creator of the pattern, who was no doubt more powerful than Rand. We know for fact that Rand could have killed the DO quite easily in the end. The creator therefore also had this option. Yet he put the DO in a prison that is outside the pattern, yet reachable. Imo, he was put there on purpose. Time and again Jordan stressed that the pattern is about balance. This means that when the DO breaks free, the Dragon will be reborn to counter him. But it also means that when the people evolve themselves to human cattle, the pattern is designed to allow the DO break free in order to restore balance. If balance is the goal, then swinging too far towards ‘light’ isn’t better than swinging towards ‘dark’. From a balance pov, both options are wrong.

The patch and the taint.

But what about the specific situation regarding LTT? Why was he not able to close the bore and why did the DO succeed in tainting saidin, effectively insuring that no one would be able to put the DO back in his prison?

There I say again that the time was not right for him to do so, for 2 reasons:

From the Tzora example I gave, we know that after patching of the bore with the seals, the people were still at the pathetic scale of pacifism, unable to even comprehend the rightness of taking out Jaric Mondoran. These people were simply unable to win the war of power. We know from quotes that they were on the brink of being overrun. They needed a timeout (because under the balance theory, the dark side cannot be allowed total victory either), which is why LTT was able to patch up the bore.

The DO could not yet be put away completely, because balance was not yet restored. The pattern could not allow the DO total freedom because the light was not able to win. But the DO still needed to have influence in order to slowly restore the balance. The pattern needed the patch to be temporary and saidin to be tainted. Or if not Saidin, Saidar. The specifics don’t matter. The pattern just needed to get to a state where the DO still had influence and the Aes Sedai were handicapped to prevent a full path on the DO’s prison.

I believe that this even explains why Ishamael periodically reappeared to bring destruction. He was the DO’s philosophical champion; the Dragon’s counterpart. The pattern needed a way for the DO to touch the earth, hence the periodic release of Ishamael.

The pattern

I see the pattern as a self correcting framework that is meant to be balanced, and which has safety features to enable it to correct itself when the balance is off in either direction. The ta’veren are the safety valve on the light side, and the DO is the safety valve on the dark side. The pattern also does not allow one side to win.

This is why the taint –while being unique to this particular age - does not matter, and why callandor didn’t matter, and why free will and prophecy are not mutually exclusive. Free will exists but the pattern will work through ta’veren to make sure that what will be, will be. Verin’s inability to travel to anywhere but Matt is a perfect example. Callandor’s properties being production flaws another example. The flaws were there because the pattern needed them to be there, and then spawned the prophecies necessary to inspire Rand to use Callandor.

If Callandor had not been flawed precicely so, and prophecy had not been foretold, this outcome would not have happened. But something else would have, one way or the other. Like a pebble rolling downhill, if it does not roll this way, it will roll another. Somehow it will reach the bottom.

Rand was able to close the bore because balance was restored and he was allowed to do so. Had he killed the DO, Mordeth would have somehow replaced the DO and become the DO. And had Rand failed, then something else would have happened that would have made it inevitable for the DO to be sealed away again, just like the circumstances of the AoL made it inevitable for the DO to be released.

In other ages, the Dragon had lost, or switched sides, or whatever, but it wouldn’t have mattered because the pattern will always correct itself. We know the DO sometimes won, and still the pattern exists. The DO winning does not destroy the pattern. It just swings the balance to the negative, making the rise of a new dragon inevitable.

You can even see how these things are like a marble falling through a marble maze. The level of pacifism lead to the bore but also to the need for a timeout, which led to the imperfect patch and the taint, which also led to Rand’s madness which just happened to give Rand the information he needed when there was no one left on the light side who had access to that information. Despite all the free will and the myriad of details that could have gone differently, we see large scale inevitability to how things progress to their conclusion.

It is very telling that on the field of merillor after one of the battles, Raen and Ila look for survivors (MoL 37), and ‘Raen tells her that in the future he will not think so poorly of those who don't follow the Way of the Leaf. She sees Hanlon looking for arrows and wonders who is worse, those that fight, or those that avoid it because they are cowards, or seek to exploit the dead and injured’. Coming from those 2 people, it shows clearly that the time of the way of the leaf has passed and balance has been fully restored. Granted, the handful of tinkers wouldn’t have mattered to the balance, but after the balance was close to restored, the right circumstances needed to come along for the Dragon to be reborn and the seals to weaken. It is fitting that the way of the leaf should be cast in doubt at the end of the last battle, given that that attitude is in my opinion what ultimately led to the DO being released in the first place.

Ishamael

I also think the role of Elan needs to be reexamined. It is far less obvious than the initial impression he makes.

He’s the only one who didn’t side with the DO for mundane reasons. He was also a distinguished philosopher and well aware of the nature of the pattern. He would have known about the need for every side to have their champion. This is a bit conjecture on my part, but it does not seem a stretch that he would have realized that the DO’s influence was needed to rebalance the pattern, and that he realized that he was the only one to see this.

He said originally that he thought it was the logical choice, for in the end, the DO must win. However, we know this is not true, because we know from arguments between Rand/LTT and Elan/Ishamael/Moridin that there have been plenty of times when the Dragon lost (I win again, Lews Therin). Winning more than once implies that no victory is final.

When Rand met Ishamael, the latter one was already quite mad and thought he was the DO himself, which is why he tried to kill him. But as Moridin, he had plenty of opportunities to snuff out Rand with balefire (such as in Shadar Logoth) and chose not to do so and even protect Rand. It seems quite clear that he did his best to assure that Rand would meet the DO. As a philosopher, he knew it had to be that way. He even knew (or was bound to know) that for the balance mechanism to work he had to make this confrontation ‘all out’.

And I think this is where his tragedy comes from. We’ve heard plenty of times that ‘Duty is heavier than a mountain, death is lighter than a feather’. Both Rand and Elan know they have to play their role. It is in their bones, so to speak. Both know they’re spun out again and again for that purpose. Yet while Rand has the ‘comfort’ of knowing he is on the side of light, Elan knows (at least in this cycle) that he will be spun out for the purpose of standing with the dark one every single time, just for the pattern to be balanced.

During MoL, we see many times that Elan is just sick and tired of it all. And he is caught between a rock and a hard place. Because not only is his duty heavier than a mountain, death is NOT lighter than a feather for him, because he knows that he’ll just be spun out again to go live through all the death and destruction one more time. And this is why in MoL he is trying so hard for the pattern to unravel. He says quite literally that he seeks oblivion.

We get the picture of him as a nihilist who thinks the struggle against the DO is futile. And that is true in a way. Not because he thinks that DO is destined to win, but because the pattern will always be ready to bring the DO back again AND make him the champion. When Rand first tells him he intends to kill the DO, Elan says that ‘You cannot possibly comprehend the magnitude of the stupidity of your idea’.

In a way, I feel for the man. He is destined for en eternity of being reborn and being the champion of suffering and misery. One could argue then: well, why does he not just betray the DO? The answer is that he can’t. Because if he does not fulfill his role in the balancing operation, he’ll just be spun out faster and faster while the balance goes further out of whack and the amount of ‘dark’ needed to bring the balance back will be even greater. Besides, he may not always be the genius philosopher who figures out what’s going on. His only way to minimize suffering is to play his part to the best of his abilities whenever he is spun out, and he knows it. Quite a bleak prospect indeed, and guaranteed to drive a man insane.
