Went trout fishing Saturday. All my spots were blown out. Only place to go when that happens and that's WCC below Trenton Falls.
Been monitoring the WCC flows and everyday at 5PM they've been cranking it from 450 cfs to 1200 cfs. I was working a nice run when the siren went off at 5pm to warn anyone in the river (I was the only one) the water will be rising.
I had only caught one fish the first time thru this run and figured I had about half hour before the river would rise (I was 2 miles from the dam and the water moves about 5 mph). So I went back to the bottom of the run to work back thru.
It was like a switch was thrown. This time they went crazy. It was every drift. After the first trip thru it and only one trout it was hard to believe there were that many trout in that run. The only thing to explain it was they must anticipate the rising water. It's like our cats, 5 minutes before the wife comes home they get up and stretch and go sit in front of the stove where she feeds them.
I don't suggest anyone stay on a dam controlled river after any warning. If you ever do make sure you have a quick route to high ground and listen. For me anyway I hear the increase before I see it. From 450 cfs to 1200 cfs sounds like a lot but probably raises WCC about 1-2 ft.. But if you're in mid stream up to your waist you're going to be in trouble.
