Spirit Training

Good evening and Happy New Year.

As 2016 draws to a close, I find myself looking forward to my dojo' annual spirit training. Every January 1st, my instructor leads a New Years"spirit training". Basically, it's a polar bear swim that involves martial arts training. We are joined by other members of the local martial arts community. A good time is had by all. It's a great way to kick off the new year, and it sure cures a hangover!

Does anyone else have a similar tradition?

Happy New Year. Any decent ice fishing reports/feedback for recent trout or salmon waters?

Baldhead Mtn - 12/21/16

We hiked Baldhead Mtn on 12/21/16 from Tucker Rd. We climbed the mountain from the south side, there are many open spots on the way up with nice southerly views toward Hadley and Roundtop. There are also good views from openings around the summit. I really like the view north toward Moose, Crane, and Gore. We did not make the trek over to Moose. We used micro spikes since there was not enough snow for snowshoes, but that has probably changed by now. The road was plowed wide enough for us to safely park along the shoulder.

Botheration Pond Loop 12/30/16

Skied the Botheration Pond Loop on Friday (12/30/16). Conditions were very good with 6-8 inches of powder on a good base. We broke trail for most of the loop. There were a few rocks that can be avoided - just be careful on the downhills. We parked at the tennis courts at Garnet Hill because the end of the road heading toward Old Farm Clearing was not yet plowed. The large bridge across the East branch of the Sacandaga has collapsed, but crossing the river on the ice was not an issue. Great day out!

Ok... so is it safe to say now that Edmond is not qualified to even coach a little league team? Are we finally to the point that we can say he has absolutely no business coaching anyone in striking? Ronda's striking defense is literally WORSE then it was when she fought Holm. What kind of hand position is that? All Amanda had to do was throw straight punches down the middle. If the Holm fight didn't put to bed the Cyborg issue this should forever. Cyborg would of savagely beaten Ronda Rousey into a bloody pulp. It angers me so much because I feel Ronda has the potential to be great but her coach has completely failed her. That seriously looked like a bully beatdown World Star Hip Hop video. I say it again, every fighter Edmond gets his hands on has a punch magnet for a face. That looked like Marina Shafir's last fight in fast forward. I don't wager Ronda will ever come back after this, and so much wasted potential because she refused to listen to her mother and other people who advised her to find a real camp. Imagine what she could of been if she went to Tristar, or AKA, etc?

Marcy Skiable new year's eve?

I'm planning to test the wind (40mph?!) at least to the tree line on the van hoevenberg trail to mt marcy over NYE. Hopefully, I'll do it on skis, but will have to decided in the dark.

Anyone here have insight? If it looks good on the flats, will it be good elsewhere? Is there a base yet? Will I destroy my skins?

The last trip report on marcy I can find was near 2 months ago (no snow, no surprise). The most recent report on the forums is 30 miles south (palmer pond) but in the same snow band. The pictures look bad for rock skis.
There has only been 2 in since then at the closets (my guess) station to macry (mt van hoevenberg). The total snow is around 8 in there; and it looks like 2 more will come while on trail.

Looking For Short, Scenic Hikes For Day Trip

Hey there everyone! First post here. I'm Brett from Attica, NY. I'm 45 years old and I'm seriously considering a move to the Adirondack region. To start with I'm going to pack up the camper and head to the region in the spring for an extended stay. And to begin preparing for that trip I'm going to start with a one day recon mission to take a look around.

So what I'd like to do is a one day scenic drive with a little hiking/sightseeing along the way. The way I figure it I'm going to leave Attica about 3:30 a.m., hit the Southwest corner of the Adirondacks about sunrise, and drive a gigantic loop up routes 28 and 30 to Lake Placid and then route 73 to I-87 to route 8 and back home. So what I'm hoping for is some ideas for a couple of quick hikes along the way. I'm an avid hiker/beginning climber with excellent gear. I'm in great shape and I'll be well prepared, including crampons and some basic climbing gear, cuz who ever knows?

I estimate I'll have about 6 hours to spare to do any sort of hiking along my route. Six hours would leave me exiting the Adirondacks as the sun goes down and the rest of my boring drive will be at night. Perfect.

So if you had 6 hours to spare along that route and you wanted to do a little hiking to see some incredible scenery where would you go? It could be one long hike but I think I'd prefer two or even three shorter hikes. There's just so much to take in I'd like a glimpse of a few different spots I think.

I must say that I'm rather infatuated with deep canyons and big waterfalls. If you were to steer me in that direction I'd almost certainly be thrilled.

And for fun my buddy Odin, a powerful and highly driven 110 pound German Shepherd, is always with me when I go hiking. He even has his own climbing harness and we practice some short climbs and rappels using the ropes on steep terrain. He'd rather just scope the forest for squirrels which is what he does most of the time, but hey, he has to learn the basics of getting through severe terrain in case we ever need to someday. Cuz who ever knows?

So thanks in advance for taking the time to give me a few suggestions for quick day hikes along my route. This is the opening mission in what I expect will become a huge adventure for me.

Allegheny Ridge and Graff Woolever Loop (Loyalsock Trail)

I recently hiked this scenic loop in the Loyalsock State Forest, and along the Loyalsock Trail. There was a great view, beautiful forests, cascades, and superb campsites. The Graff Woolever Trail was steep, but beautiful.

Hi all. I am new to ny came from south jersey. I'm in Greenwich and I'm looking for hiking gear stores , I know about ems in Milton, mountain man supply in saratoga, of course, LL Bean in Colonie. I would like to find other shops near by even Vermont. All help would be appreciated.

Emergency Animal Rescue

I have been backpacking/climbing here since '69 and have been fortunate that none of my dogs have ever gotten injured during our adventures. However, is there an emergency animal rescue group similar to those brave people who rescue injured humans? When a hiker is hurt or lost a whole lot of people are called into action to help that hiker. An injured dog would be a lot less complicated in most instances.

Dog sitters

Last time I came up to do a difficult hike/climb I left my older dog at home. She could have made the climb, but the 14 miles would have been too much. Was only gone three days, but my wife said our dog was miserable the entire time our other dog and I were gone. Didn't eat and was generally miserable.

I know there are kennels or veterinarian hospitals where I could leave her for one day, but I don't want to have her kept in a cage. Are there dog sitters near Lake Placid or Keene that take a dog in for a day? My particular girl is a 35 lb puggel. There isn't a mean hair or bone in her body and she loves anyone who loves her back. Anyways, I'm thinking one half day away from me in a non caged/family environment would make her a whole lot happier then staying at home for three days.

Gold Belt

I am the founder and gold belt in Neo-Bokator. I always wanted to be a martial arts master since the first day I saw someone with a black belt. I remember it vividly, it was in taekwondo, they had black collars on their gi, not the white collars that the colored belts had.

I've studied martial arts since I was a kid. I started with WTF taekwondo, then some karate. When I got into high school it was only natural to start wrestling. Then I learnt some judo throws and when MMA got popular I checked out BJJ. I've also done some kickboxing and thai boxing.

Now I teach the noble art of Neo-Bokator at a private facility. I've put together all the best parts from the different styles I've studied. It's not just how to do the different things, like grappling and striking, but actually blending it together to become a full system.

I'll honestly say that I never had a black belt, but to have an easier time teaching people I've awarded myself with a gold belt I found on Amazon. It helps me tap into the master persona. Students just needs certain things to feel at home in the dojo.

Despite this, I do teach them pretty legit stuff. I teach them boxing basics, kicking basics, wrestling, judo. People are actually very impressed. Down the street they teach boxing, but they don't kick or grapple, so I am pretty much miles ahead of the competition at this location. I am a respected member of the community.

I hope this forum can be a place for me to vent. Sometimes I doubt myself and run into trouble with certain students. Here I can anonymously discuss matters with other masters.

whilst I agree with allot of what he says, I have trouble seeing anything Hakka, mantis or special about what he did in that fight although the kick to the chin rocked :D

Learning to take a punch

As a 30-something year old woman who likes to travel, often alone, self-defence is high on my agenda to learn. I currently train in taekwondo, however I am very aware that there is significant difference between sport and a real fight. My school (from the Moo Duk Kwon federation) doesn't place a high emphasis on high impact sparring.

I've read many accounts of muggings and one of the key themes I've found is the ability to take a punch.

My question: is there a way to train for this without getting constantly hit in the head? (I've read way too many scientific reports about the long term consequences of concussions and impact head trauma.)

The unnamed hill immediately to the south of Palmer Pond has a double summit. The northern summit is nondescript, but the southern summit is quite spectacular.

Today I used the new bridge to try out the new access and the different route. It was quite a pleasant bushwhack, although the crust on top of the 8-10" of snow slowed the upward progress a little.

It'll be her first fight in 13months since her (at time of post) only loss, to Holly Holm.

Prior to that beautiful headkick, Ronda was tauted and pushed as a the next big thing. A giant feminist icon. A stereotype breaker where you can be big and beautiful. Leader of the Women's division.

Where am I going with this you may as?

Well before Ronda, before the giant glitz and glamour. There was a handful of female fighters about. Due to the shallow amount, they had to take fight where and when they can. Mostly underpaid.

Saranac Campground Info

Hello all,

I am looking to get a campsite in the Saranac Islands campground this upcoming June for opening weekend of bass season. It may seem early for this inquiry, but according to the ReserveAmerica website, the sites are filling up quickly for that weekend and indeed for the rest of the summer.

I am having difficulty finding information about specific sites. I camped once on Middle Saranac about 20 years ago; I remember a long paddle from the put-in on First Pond and passing through the locks, but I don't remember much about specific sites. Can anyone recommend specific sites on either Lower or Middle, or maybe give some advice as to which sites to avoid? I usually go to places like Cranberry or Little Tupper where it's 1st come, so if you don't like your site you just move to a better one. Not an option here, so I'm hoping to get some information to help me pick the right spot.

Any advice between Middle and Lower Saranac. I've read both are really good for bass, which is why I'm going there for the opening of the season. I'm wondering if there is something to recommend one over the other? Fishing is our primary reason for this particular trip, but I also like places with a quiet place to paddle or a nice hike.

Lastly, any idea what sort of boat traffic I should expect? We will be travelling by canoe, although I may bring the little electric trolling motor along.

4 hours until ski jumps start. Any ideas of what to do in placid. Already been to whiteface. Did gondola. Sled thing shut down. Can't fly due to weather. Anything I'm missing besides skating.

We've done a peak in Nov and one in Apr - looking to try our hand at a winter peak. I am thinking something off of AMR's Lake Road since it will provide a stretch of relatively easier miles. Possibly Sawteeth or Dial & Nippletop?

Would welcome advise. Thinking Jan 2, staying over evening before at Loj campground (feel free to offer better options from Loj, although we are kind of saving Wright for warmer temps when we can make a go at Iroquois too).
