I've accessed this gem a couple times previously. It used to be a little more of a challenge. You had to ford the Schroon River, then find the walking culvert to pass under I87.
Now you can utilize the newly constructed DEC bridge over "The Branch"; the outlet of Palmer Pond, to get to the NE section of the Hoffman Notch Wilderness Area.
The unnamed hill immediately to the south of Palmer Pond has a double summit. The northern summit is nondescript, but the southern summit is quite spectacular.
Today I used the new bridge to try out the new access and the different route. It was quite a pleasant bushwhack, although the crust on top of the 8-10" of snow slowed the upward progress a little.
If you are a bushwhacker, this is an area to add to your exploration list...
