How do you pronounce "portage"

The earlier thread on the one wheel portage cart which pointed to a YouTube video led me to wonder how folks pronounce 'portage'. I have always pronounced it like shortage, but the guy in the video said it in a more French sort of way that rhymed with "fromage". I grew up in Maine, I don't know if it is a regional thing.
