Leon Roberts (well known MMA ref) had to place a controlled RNC on a fighter who was essentially refusing to stop.

Personally, props for doing that. The guy got KO'd, fair enough pouncing on for the finish but when you got the Ref on top, holding you back and you're still not stopping then he's going to use what force he can to do so.
The guy was still awarded the win. I think it was grounds for a DQ.
