Is it beneficial for an experienced martial artist to go through periods of dabbling in other martial arts, in addition to continued training in one's base art? Why or why not?
I would think that dabbling would help as it can help a martial artist understand a broad range of basic principals that govern each respective art that can help him or her better read opponents, understand his or her base art, etc.
After all, the goal is to enhance the main art, which a continued input of new principals, theories, training methods, teachers, students, and techniques will do.
However, I think that dabbling would only be beneficial in shorter periods, as continued serious cross training in another art would be more helpful in the long run.
