In my youngest daughter's quest to score her "Hamilton County Waterfall Challenge" patch before school starts, we hit the small cascade on the North Branch of the West Stony Creek. This was her first time on the Northville-Placid trail and while a thru hike is probably not in the cards, she did thoroughly enjoy herself on the 1.6 miles to our destination.
Arriving at the Godfrey Rd parking area at a leisurely 10 AM, we just missed a group of thru hikers who left a few minutes before us. What a great day to start the trail!
We made a modest pace on the easy trail through the right of way, stopping to dodge mud wallows and count salamanders. Soon enough, we made it to the designated campsite and had a quick break. While my daughter snacked, I explored the area and noted the Notch Trailhead across the creek. Someday, I'll get back in there!
After the quick break was over and a few more minutes on a good trail alongside the creek we made it to the falls and bridge. My daughter had another quick snack (as young children frequently do) as I explored the bridge and the junction of the new trail section. I'll add that to my list of things to do in the near future.
Soon enough it was time for the quick walk back to the parking area. We had a nice chat with five ladies who were hiking the Piseco section and were experiencing their first long distance hike. Near the parking area, we approached another hiker, but between us in the trail was a young fawn. The deer wasn't sure what to do as we all froze. Eventually, the deer ran off and we commented to the solo thru hiker that it was a good way to start his trip and a good way for us the end ours.
