Great Range great hike!

I took on a big chunk of the great range yesterday (8/11/14). I headed out with Sawteeth, Gothics, Armstrong and UWJ. I started from the AMR side, parking across the road from the Giant parking spot on73. I left the car at 7:30, hiking by myself as my normal hiking companions were working. (I took, vacation to hike this week and expect rain most of the week.). A quick stop at rainbow falls brings the gratification I always get while going there. I got to the intersection of Sawteeth and Pyramid at 10:30 and hit the top around 11 and visited with a lady and man that were up canoeing and hiking. I passed a young lady hiking solo who was headed up Sawteeth and a mother and two daughters. I headed back down around 11:20 and was headed to pyramid. I knew it was .5 back to the intersection and .6 to Pyramid. I was back at the intersection in about 15 minutes but didn't get to the top of Pyramid until 12:20. The view was incredible of Basin, Gothics, saddleback, Haystack, Marcy, Algonquin, wright and Iroquois. Just an awesome view. The common topic on top was how loooong the .6 tenth was. There was a good crowd building with two hikers from New Hampshire, 4 teens and the the young lady I had passed and the mother daughters group. Took a few pictures and started for Gothics. This was a much easier trek than up Pyramid and the view quite rewarding and was at the peak at 1:15. I lost my coolie on the way but never did have anyone coming in the same direction that found it. Took some more pictures of the fantastic view and visited with the same hikers from pyramid.

I headed to Armstrong next with the young men leap frogging me again. I leave the top of a mountain and they pass me before I can get to the top of the next but I guess that is a part of hiking at 50. With this being "my" mountain "Armstrong" I was hoping there would be a geological disc but there was not. Took some great pictures and was glad to see Whiteface from this top as I like to get a picture of whiteface from any top that I can see it on. While visiting on Armstrong there were 3 young men trying to do the range and had started on LWJ and planned to go over saddleback, basin, Marcy and and camp at colder lake. I thought that was quite a hike then, I think today that time was against them at getting to lake Coleen by dark for sure. I don't know if I ever got where they were from but I believe it was near Washington DC as they often referred to things in that area. This was there second hike as they had done 8 mile hike the day before. Time to head to Upper Wolf Jaw. I headed out after one last quick picture and offered the young lady hiking alone to hike together on the way out. Seeming to not commit either way I headed out. I stopped to grab a few more pictures and she passed me. I like to stop throughout my hikes for pictures of mountains, trees, flowers or anything of interest. It wasn't long after I came on some of the steep tough mini cliffs etc you encounter on the wolf and soon came up on"Mary" working her way down who offered me to go first so she could see how I did went down. I have a great staff as my hiking stick and it works great on these type of hikes. As I showed Mary my route I realized she had tossed her "sticks" down below. I offered her to use mine as I had and it worked great. As we continued down these steep parts I "hovered" concerned for her safety. I admitted my likely unwarranted concerns since she had just hiked over four mountains but Mary stated it was her first time hiking alone and welcomed my hovering. We hiked together on the way out and enjoyed conversation and stories that come from fellow hikers. We reached the parking area by 73 at 6:30 and I was now very tired but felt accomplished having done 5 mountains and 4 46ers putting me at 23 or half way. I am hoping the weather will work in my favor this weekend and be able to get more 46ers in. I'm thinking maybe the Dix Range.:
