Snowy weather is quickly approaching! Last year I purchased a pair of Fischer E99 Crown skis, mounted them with Voile HD Mountaineer 3 pin bindings, and purchased a pair of Alpina BC1575 Touring Boots. So far, I have only user this gear locally in Rochester with a set of old cross country ski poles I had previously purchased with another pair of skis on craigslist.
This winter, I'm hoping to take the skis up to the Adirondacks with me for a few trips. My question is, what sort of poles should you use? I'd like to upgrade from the old ones I have now. I know cross country ski poles are normally longer in length and sturdier than trekking poles. For Adirondack trips are cross country poles best? Backcountry poles? Trekking poles?
For example, one trip I hope to take is skiing up the Whiteface toll road and then hiking to Esther and the summit of Whiteface. Would trekking poles be sturdy enough for that? Or do people use their ski poles during the hiking portion? Or bring both and switch? Some other trips I have in mind might include skiing Lake Rd (with a possible hike to Indian Head/Fish Hawk Cliffs) or skiing to Avalanche Pass
I'm newer to cross country skiing but have downhill skied/snowboarded for over 20 years. Any suggestions as to what type of poles and/or specific poles/brands are appreciated. Thanks!
