Greetings everyone,
I am interested in martial arts for self-defense purposes. I work in international relations and often travel to sometimes nasty places in the developing world. On one of my last trips I was assaulted. Thankfully, no serious injury occurred, but it served as a wake up call that I should have some foundation in self-defense. I'm going back to school, so I'll finally be in one place long enough to devote some time to learning & training. I respect everyone's beliefs but I do not really want to devote a lot of time to meditation or philosophy. I am not really interested in competition and I'm not the sort of person who is going to get in bar brawls.
Really, I am looking to learn a lifeskill that I can use to keep myself safe and getting into great shape wouldn't be half bad. I would also like to learn something about how to respond knives and firearm if thats possible. Maybe there are non-martial arts classes or specific seminars that cover that sort of thing?
I have maybe 2-3 years to train, then I'm back off to who knows what country for intermittent periods of time. I don't know if you can continue to practice martial arts on your own?
I'm male, mid-20s, 6'1", 165 pounds, and fairly athletic and I live in Chicago. I have no background in martial arts or any fighting style.
Any suggestions on where to start, what styles might fit me?
