During recent discussions I suddenly realised that not all martial arts have compulsory insurance for participants (or liabillity insurance for instructors).
In judo, rugby and many other contact sports it comes with your membership. In some places it appears that the club you train in has general cover for participants no matter what art they are training in. Other groups have nothing at all and it is up to you to make sure that you have protection.
Irrespective of the position of your club or association , will the insurance you have do enough for you should you be hurt? If you aren't insured then what are you doing to protect yourself should you have something happen that might limit your ability to work or otherwise enjoy life. Will you have income replacement?medical cover? costs for adaptive equipment or aides? Martial arts people often act like they are immortal! Lots to consider.
I mention this because of having seen more than one instance of sportspersons breaking their necks (BJJ once , rugby once) and sometimes people recover and sometimes they don't. Never expected and no one could be prepared for what life is like once you can't use your limbs (especially if you have been a sports person).
Would be interested in hearing people's experiences and thoughts irrespective of arts involved.
