I have made the journey from Binghamton to Pulaski (Pulaski Area) coutless times since the last week of October. Enough trips to blow through an oil change in three weeks lol - Anyways, after a few decades away from the Salmon river thing, I am certifiably addicted to the Steelhead thing, enough so where I have deer hunted "casually" since the 15th down here in the southern zone. I have not been up since the massive lake effect event began Saturday, but everything is locked and loaded, wating for the temps to crack the 40's again, with fingers crossed that the snowmelt wont be to sudden and ruin the flow.
For starters, I refuse to get in on the 6 weeks or Salmon snatching....That aint fishing Alice. I have been fly fishing with a 6 weight 9' 10" rod and a vintage Pfluger Medalist reel. 10lb standard mono off the backing to a 8lb Flurocarbon tipit. I have used a variety of flies and streamers with mixed success depending on the offering. I have forced myself to fish using NO WEIGHT or the smallest sinker on the shelf. With a correct 10-2 drift, the fly will find the bottom, or close to it, at the begining of the "swing" I have noticed that most guys are using enough weight to fish the ocean and wonder why? I have watched guy after guy break off and re-rig while I only tickle the bottom here and there.
I have also watched an astonishing number of guys "lift" at the end of their drift. Enough so where any game warden would ticket them....It is amazing how many people openly break the law these days....Anyways, if you have some advice or steelhead stories, I would love to hear them. I am still learning but have managed about 15 hook-ups in my rookie season. I wont tell you how many were landed lol! Thats the hard part!!
