I was reading through one of the guidebooks for the Appalachian Trail, and I came across an interesting notation. Apparently, in 1980, an entire shelter disappeared without a trace from the Maryland section of the AT. It is surmised that the shelter was stolen for the value of the wood used to construct it, as it had been constructed using chestnut logs.
Just thinking about the logistics that must have been involved in stealing a whole shelter is mind boggling. And disappointing that someone would go through all of that work to undertake an action that was harmful to the hiking community.
