1000 Acre Swamp. WLWF, 30 Sep, 2019

The 1000 ac. Swamp in the Wilcox Lake Wild Forest is one of those places I've driven past many times over the past few years and always longed to explore. I've always been in a hurry to get home or to another destination. "Some day", I always said. Well, since I could only spend a few hours in the woods this morning, today was the day.

Tredhed and I hit the unmarked trailhead on Fox Hollow Rd in the Town of Edinburg.

Walking on snowmobile trails isn't always the greatest adventure, but this was an old logging road, so it had character.

After a few minutes, we came to a sad looking Toyota on the side of the trail.

A hundred yards down the trail, a solid bridge brought us over Little Hans Creek and an access point to the "Swamp".

While the upstream side of the swamp seemed to be mostly grasslands...

...the downstream side had more open water and snags.

After exploring the marshes a little, we set off up the trail and deeper into the "Swamp".

It wasn't long before we started to see moose tracks in the mud. Some were rather fresh.

Just before we had to turn around, we passed a spot where the resident moose had just vigorously marked his territory. It was foul smelling stuff and it took a while before I could get it out of my nose. Too bad ADK Forum doesn't have a scratch and sniff capability.

Soon enough, we had to turn around and head back to the trailhead. All told, we walked about 3 miles exploring the wilds of Saratoga County.

After getting back to the truck, we had a few minutes to check out the tidy little designated campsite at Albia Pond, a short 3/4 mile up Fox Hill Rd.

The small pond was very scenic and settled in a little nook at the edge of the state land. While only a few hundred yards from the road, it sure had a remote feel to it.

Back in the truck, we drove back down the road and across the blue line to have some lunch at the DEC parking area at Archer Vly. The leaves were pretty much peak and provided a nice backdrop for our soup and sandwich.

I really enjoyed this short explore in an area that I've always overlooked before. While I'm a little disappointed we didn't get to see the moose that made the fresh tracks and that nasty smelling calling card, I was thoroughly please with this mornings adventure. Sometimes, it's good to see things in a different light. I can't wait to get back here on snowshoes!

Boggs Run Vista-Sproul State Forest

Boggs Run Vista is a remarkable view over the 1,100 foot deep canyon of Boggs Run in Sproul State Forest of the PA Wilds region. It is a 180 degree view and looks over the Chuck Keiper Trail. Fairly easy to reach, although half the hike is off trail, the other half follows an old jeep road.

I hiked part of the famous Falls Trail on a weeknight. There weren't many people and the flow was excellent. This is such an impressive park with over 20 waterfalls and old growth forests.

November Camping

Hi All,
A small group of us are looking to bust out the canoes in mid November for some camping/fishing/getting away/etc. for a couple of nights. This is our first time out to the Whitney Wilderness area so any tips and opinions are greatly appreciated.
The goal would be to stay on Little Tupper but depending on the wind and weather conditions, we may go to Round Lake as a back up if the waters are too choppy. I know how unpredictable the weather can be in this area but we will be using a canvas tent with a little stove.
Any tips for bass fishing in those colder temperatures? (I know the trout are catch and release only).
Anyone go that time of year, experiences?
Thanks in advance!

Kids in SEA use internet less for online messaging, more for music, video streaming

Children in Southeast Asia today use the internet increasingly for video and music entertainment as well as for software downloads, and lesser for online messaging. More kids in the region use the World Wide Web to watch their favorite TV series like Game of Thrones and movies like Avengers, according to the 2019 report from Kaspersky Safe Kids.

Based on the report’s 2018 and 2019 results, a double-digit growth in children using the internet for accessing software, audio, and video websites was observed in Indonesia (38.72% to 60.33%), the Philippines (25.41% to 49.12%), Singapore (25.03% to 42.32%), Thailand (11.28% to 37.23%), and Vietnam (27.11% to 50.14%). Only Malaysia scored a slight decrease from 60.08% to 51.15%. This category, however, remains the current top online interest among Malaysian kids.

The Software, audio, video category includes websites for downloading audio and video files: movies, recordings of sports events and concerts, music, music videos, video clips, audio and video learning materials, etc. Torrent trackers and file sharing services irrespective of physical location of files to which they provide access were also under this category.

“It is an accepted fact that our children are better internet navigators than us, adults. With their curiosity and quickness in grasping or even making their own online trends, it is undoubtedly important for parents to know their interests and habits. Our report showed videos, music, and software are increasingly becoming kids’ favorite activities, and we are fully aware that such sites are plagued with malware, virus, and dangerous content. We hope these findings could help parents in understanding their kids better and in protecting them against the potential dangers in the digital world,” comments Yeo Siang Tiong, General Manager for Southeast Asia at Kaspersky.

The increased interest in this category was also observed globally by Kaspersky. Overall number shows audio, video, and software sites are most popular in Africa, Asia, and in Arab nations. The decline in the use of PCs for online messaging, however, reflects the shift in children's preference in using mobile devices over computers for messaging apps.

With the shift in their online interests, the top three internet activities for kids in SEA for 2019 are software, audio, and video websites; online messaging, and electronic commerce.

More young shoppers, lesser adult content visitors in SEA
The same report showed a trend of increasing young shoppers in Southeast Asia where the year-on-year comparison showed as much as 13% increase from January to July 2018 and 2019.

Singaporean kids led the pack tallying 18.82% compared with just 5.58% of children using the internet for e-commerce. The Philippines closely followed at 13.21% compared with 2.39% last year. Malaysia recorded an increase of over 8% (4.70% to 13.02%), while Indonesia and Thailand have 4.8% and 1.62% growths, respectively. Only Vietnam marked a slight decline from 1.03% to 1.02% of young shoppers online.

The Electronic commerce category includes websites for any electronic money transactions through special web applications. This covers online stores and auctions offering any goods and services to individuals or legal entities that support online payment as well as websites of stores that only operate via the Internet and online departments of regular stores.

Under this category, special web pages of public and private institutions or individuals that offer any paid services are included as well as special web pages of banks where online banking transactions can be performed. Websites of online payment systems that require a personal user account is also covered by this category.
Another noteworthy finding is the decrease in percentage of kids in the region who use the internet to access adult content. Most countries in the region showed lesser interest for pornography and related content this year. Malaysia posted a very minimal increase of only 0.09 in this category.

Asia, in general, also scored a decline from 2.72% to 2.26% yet its numbers remained quite high compared with other regions globally in terms of adult content interest among kids.

Statistics by region from the Kaspersky report show that the largest share of visits to adult sites were from young users in Latin America (4.28%), South Asia (2.74%) and Asia.

“It is encouraging to see that fewer children are interested in online adult content in the region. We credit the steps being done by SEA governments to block easy access to such sites. However, the shift of interest towards online shopping should mark a closer guidance between kids and parents. The risks in e-commerce such as fake sellers, fake products, malware-infected sites, compromised payment gateways, and more, pose a real and costly danger against the family’s financial details. Parents, we urge you to pay attention to this,” adds Yeo.

Tips for modern parents
Kids are smart, but they are not fully aware of the threats online. To protect them from the dangers lurking in the internet, Kaspersky suggests the following:
1. Communicate - talk and serve as a mentor. You can teach your kids as to what is socially acceptable to do and what is not. You should also make your kids feel comfortable coming to you on those instances where they frankly were a kid, messed up and did something wrong.

2. Have the talk regularly - talk to your kids regularly about technology, even if it means you playing dumb and asking them to help you set up a Snapchat, Tumblr or Facebook account.

By showing your kids that you trust them as teachers, the more it builds up that mutual trust. You can also educate them to things that you are hearing or seeing in regards to cyberthreats or security breaches.

3. Set boundaries - make sure that they know what is acceptable and what is not. Also make them aware of the consequences of going somewhere that they shouldn’t or using tech when they shouldn’t be.

4. Educate yourself – be aware of your kids’ online interests and of the latest threats online. Remember that you cannot teach what you do not know.

5. Use the resources that are there for you - use the resources provided by some companies or organisations that can help guide you in raising your modern kid.

There are also technologies out there like Kaspersky Safe Kids that allow parents to help serve as a secondary level of protection from unwanted creeps, dirty content or to even find a lost or stolen phone. This feature is included in Kaspersky solutions – like Kaspersky Internet Security, Kaspersky Total Security, and Kaspersky Security for Cloud.

Report Methodology
To be able to gather the statistics, Kaspersky Lab solutions scan the content of web pages that children try to access. If a particular site belongs to one of fourteen unwanted categories, the module sends a notification to the Kaspersky Security Network (there is no transfer of personal user data and no violation of privacy).
It is important to note that:
● Parents decide for themselves what content should be blocked and configure the application accordingly. However, anonymous statistics are collected across all fourteen categories.
● Data is harvested only from computers running Windows and Mac OS; no mobile statistics are provided in this report.

Native Brookies

Landed my first two Adirondack heritage strain brookies Sunday afternoon fishing out of my kayak. This is the smaller one. The other was bigger and by a decent amount, however I wanted to release it quickly, didn't check the picture and it caught mostly glare reflected from the water's surface. Man, they are colorful!

Cedar River Flow quickie

Spent a couple days on the Flow, site #4, it's big and comfortable, but not as big as #3.
BTW, the online DEC map (PDF) is not accurate. Not counting the sites at the dam, there are 6 sites on the flow. 5 on the E shore, 1 on the W shore where the NPT approaches the Flow.
Site #4 has a great view of Payne Mt and the cliff bands that we didn't bushwhack. (Future forays will be paddle in from Payne Brook, bushwhack up Payne to the cliffs.)
I did check out #3 on a bluff with much room and a little beach.
We did paddle up Buell Brook as far as possible, it's worth the effort.
Large group on #6 had a stomping bull moose under their hammocks at 2:30 AM...many flashlights and a confused guy wandered off without incident.
Colors are near peak, my buddy (hickoryskier) tried to wake me for a sunrise rainbow photo, I took too long to put on my rain gear to get the whole thing.
Lots of wind.

Indian Lake Overnight 9/22

On Sunday, 9/22/19, our group of three humans and two dogs made an overnight trip to Indian Lake Islands Campground site 39.

The campground's kayaks were all rented, so we rented a canoe and brought our own kayak and paddled the 2.5 miles to the camp site. It took us about an hour to reach the site.

As we approached the camp site, we passed three women in kayaks who were paddling the opposite direction. We asked which site they were coming from, and they said they had just stopped and ate lunch at site 39 (our site, which happened to have a "No Picnicking" sign. Hmm).

When we arrived at the site, we noticed some trash and food scraps around. It wasn't terrible, but not what we expected to find. The outhouse was stocked with toilet paper. We set up our tents and hammock and gathered kindling. We had brought our own firewood, purchased from a gas station nearby.

After lunch I went for a swim. The water was chilly but still fine for swimming. The rock ledges at the site made for some fun jumping.

Several motorboats and paddlers went by though out the day and evening. A bunch of ducks swam across the lake and came right up to our camp site hoping to be fed, but we're scared away by the dogs. We also spotted lions and a pair of common mergansers.

The night was warm and the sky was clear—at night the Milky Way was overhead and stars reflected off the lake.

After breakfast the next morning we packed up an began our paddle back to the boat launch. Wind and a bit of rain slowed us down.

This was our first visit to Indian Lake and our first time paddling in a few years. We really enjoyed it and hope to be back in the future.

Ledge (Ledger) Mountain

Hello, everyone. Has anyone ever bushwhacked up Ledge Mountain (called "Ledger" on some maps)? The best access to the mountain appears to be from the trail to Rock River/Rock Pond off Route 28 between Blue Mountain Lake and Indian Lake. It appears to be a short jaunt (about one mile one-way), with the first 1/2 of the hike over level ground. I've seen posts on other websites from a couple of folks who have bushwhacked up Ledge/Ledger, but I'd be interested in feedback from people on this site. Thank you.

Lake Placid -to- NYC Port Authority Bus?

Anyone ever take that bus trip? Apparently 8 hours but only $70; Amtrak is $90 but takes almost 10 hours. I think my wife would be OK to drop me off at the Northville trailhead. I figured I could take this bus + NJ Transit to Trenton NJ that gets me very close to home. Just looking for any insights. Thanks.

Old Loggers Path: Masten CCC Camp, then and now.

This is pretty neat. I recently stumbled across a website with photos of CCC Camps from around the country. Included on the site is this photo of CCC Camp S-80 in Masten, PA. Masten is somewhat well known in PA hiking circles today as being the traditional trailhead for the Old Loggers Path.

Having done a few trips on the OLP over the years, something about the old photo of the CCC Camp looked familiar- the pine seedling planted in parallel rows along the walkway. I looked through my photos from my 2012 hike of the OLP, and sure enough I found this photo, which I believe are the same trees, nearly 80 years later- and all grown up. The buildings are long gone, but the Masten area remains a neat spot to poke around and explore (there's a few chimneys left behind if nothing else).

Overlap personal loan bank rakyat

hai.

Saya nak mohon pendapat rakan2 kat board ni mengenai personal loan yg saya buat dgn bank rakyat bbrp tahun lps.

Saye terfikir utk buat early settlement bermula thn dpn. In shaa allah. Mule2 igt nak byr lebih dr byrn bulanan sekarang tp rupe2nye ia x berapa membantu. Sbb lbh untung dpt settle sume sekali terus. Mmg untung tp tak berapa nak berduit utk settle sekaligus.

Mohon sgt utk dibantu utk sume persoalan saya.

Terima kasih....

Indian Pond/Baldwin Spring, WLWF, 25 Sep, 2019

Today's adventure was a long bumpy drive up the East Stony Creek Rd. in Thurman to explore the Indian Pond trail deep in the Wilcox Lake Wild Forest.

Tredhed stopped by the house early and we hit the road before the school buses.

An hour and a half later, we were at the trailhead on the extremely rocky and rutted East Stony Creek Rd.

The trail generally goes north from the "road" but doesn't exactly follow what the topo map indicates.

The first section takes us next to a large swampy area with great views of Long Tom Ridge.

A strategic placement of a board helps cross the outlet of the large marsh.

While the first hundred yards of trail is kind of hard to follow and liberally marked with ribbons...

...the trail eventually opens up into what you'd expect an old snowmobile trail to be.

Within a very short time, we arrived at the stone dam across the Madison Creek.

The view from the dam was pretty nice.

We then walked a hundred yards up the flow to an old campsite.

Needs work, but it is in a great location.

At the shore of the pond, the views of the huge vly and Mt. Blue were spectacular.

After exploring the area for a good hour, Tredhed and I walked back out the one mile to the East Stony Creek Rd.

We drove to the Baldwin Spring designated campsite and explore the area.

After crossing the East Stony Creek...

We walked the 200 yds to the trail hub at Baldwin Spring.

This is the third or fourth time we've been here in the last few years and it's always impressive; especially the cool water flowing from the spring! :)

Since there was a truck already parked at the Baldwin Spring designated campsite, we got back in the truck and drove back out to the Langworth Creek designated campsite at the old Barber place.

Our lunch location wasn't too bad today.

After our lunch, we walked down to the pond for a quick view of the surrounding area.

Too soon, it was time to head back out over the hill.

The bumpy road was fine for the truck, but as always, I wouldn't recommend it for a low clearance vehicle.

Soon, enough we hit the Wold Pond Rd. and "civilization" where we had this nice view of the Stony Creek as it tumbles out of the hills.

Nuff said.

Washbowl Fire

Today I checked out the site of last week's Washbowl fire. The fire was at the north end of the Washbowl and is not all that visible from the bridge on the Ridge Trail. The fire was started by a campfire. Whomever built the fire carefully placed rocks around the edge, but the fire burned down through the flammable organic layer of pine needles (a.k.a. duff) and easily "escaped" the ring of rocks. Build fires on rocks or other non flammable surfaces. First photo is the extent of the fire from the other shore. Second photo shows the fire ring that failed to contain the fire.
And while I'm on my soapbox lamenting poor hiker/camper behavior, here is a final photo showing a "bootleg" trail that cuts one of the switchbacks below the Washbowl. That bootleg trail has now been brushed in, and we can only hope that hikers now stay on the established trail. Third photo shows the bootleg trail that goes straight down the fall line and would soon become eroded if allowed to continue.

Paddling Tupper Lake and its ponds

I'm new to the daks and now live in Tupper Lake. Since I live 5 minutes by foot to Raquette Pond, I have explored Tupper, Raquette Pond, and Simon Pond numerous times. For anyone interested, I have observation and my take on the lakes on my website. There's also quite a few photos. I know there are plenty of better waters but since they are out my front door, I've explored these the most my first few months here. http://www.tomcatsadventures.com/201...pper-lake.html

Pharaoh Mt - Treadway Mt loop?

I'm planning to camp for 2 nights at Pharaoh Lake next week (October).
On the middle day I want to hike a loop that would include Pharaoh Mt, Rock Pond and Treadway Mt. - on trail only ( route is fairly obvious on a map, I think).
Would this be a very difficult day hike? By way of comparison, I have hiked the Lake Arnold-Skylight-Marcy Loop from Marcy Dam. I am guessing this hike would be easier, but are there things I don't know? Are the trails very rough or difficult to follow? Or longer than they appear?
I would appreciate any information on the trails I would be using.

Allen from the east / Boreas

I have explored the area to the east of Allen Mountain, and come with in about 2 miles of the summit. I've never attempted an ascent however. Anyone tried it yet?

Bog River flow questions

My wife and I are looking to do a 2 night trip on the Bog river flow this weekend. We are hoping to put in early Saturday morning and take out before lunch on Monday. We are both new to kayak camping. What is the best put in/take out for this? How far can we realistically expect to go in that time, how likely will we be to get a camping site? I like the idea of being able to pull off hike and explore as well as being mostly sheltered from the wind and away from motor boats. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Strong Rope Brewery at Potter's - Blue Mountain Lake

We visited the newly opened tap room in Potter's former bar. Fun place, nice people, good beer. They are a satellite outlet for the nephew's Brooklyn brewery. They hope to add a food truck by the time they re-open next spring. Great to see the investment in Blue Mountain Lake!

Campsite Claiming Etiquette

Typically public Adirondack tent sites are first come first served, I get that. But I’m just curious what is the common consensus on the etiquette of someone coming in on a Thursday to set up camp for the weekend, but then leaves & doesn’t come back until Saturday morning with several friends/family?

I have definitely arrived on a Thursday before to try & claim a choice campsite for a weekend gathering, but never ever have I left the site unoccupied for a night or two only to return a couple days later to spend the weekend.
Is this legal?
Thoughts?

Grace Peak

Hiked in on a Tuesday and setup my tent for three nights. Had my two dogs with me. In all my years of coming up here from Cleveland, I have never seen such perfect weather (also spent two nights at Art Devlin's). Been struggling for the past year with my right knee, and between packing in and the climb up Grace, I sure did a number on it. Though I struggled because of it, I know my body well enough to know that I was still going to make it. Took many hours to accomplish, but accomplish we did. Didn't do the slide but chose the safer herd path. Hell, stepped out one time to get a couple of shots of Grace and I slipped 10'. No thank you, I'll leave that slide stuff to the younger folks. Everything about this trip was great, and I will never grow tired of driving into Lake Placid and that amazing surrounding view. Try as I might, I once again failed to find that 1/2 mile in river crossing. Got across after the falls and a little bushwhack. Lost the trail one time before getting to my campsite, but found it quick enough. Also missed a right hand turn partway up Grace, but again, found it without too much delay. Couple of the rocky creek crossings I needed to look around in order to find the trail. It was all good.

Cliff Bushwhack and Slide Descent. Massive Redfield Slabs.

The fine line between hiking and technical climbing without gear. No place for the bold and daring.

PICTURES

For this off-trail hiking project mastergrasshopper and I set our sights on a Cliff-Redfield two-fer. After some back and forth map work via e-mail we agreed upon a course. We would whack Cliff directly from the Hanging Spears Falls trail from Flowed Lands then descend the Cliff Slide. Next, we would ascend the massive slabs on Redfield's south-west sub-summit, cross over and drop down to the bottom of the Redfield Slide for the ascent of Redfield.

Our intended route.

This itinerary called for a 6am start and at 8:30 we began the whack of Cliff from Flowed Lands. We began in the land of Floyd and progressed very slowly, clambering over countless pieces of blowdown until we arrived at a beautiful beaver pond (see pics). We detoured well to the south and forgot to correct, so by following the same bearing we were now (unbeknownst to us) aimed for one of Cliffs southern bumps.

Luckily we came screeching to a spot above huge and dizzying vertical drop that was not on our map.
We sat down and examined the map and discussed things. Once we figured out where we were we confirmed our solution with the GPS and began a slow and extremely gnarly traverse up on a narrow ridge to get back to our desired line of ascent along a “ramp” that lies just south of the winter route up Cliff from Livingston Pond. The cliffs petered out and we dropped into a gorgeous mossy fen (soggy ground).
We traversed the fen and, thoroughly enjoying our outing, we were now at 3100 feet. It was a straight shot to the summit through moderately easy woods. We hit the top
after 5h30 of hiking from Upper Works.

The next item on the agenda was the Cliff Slide which completely changed the nature of our hike. It was as if a brand new panel had been pulled across the previous one. (pics) We almost went down the wrong way and corrected by side-hilling across 45 degree slopes of leather leaf and cedar thickets until we dropped into the upper slide. It was very steep with plenty of loose rocks. We stuck very close together and following, I dislodged a couple of 20 lb rocks that went careening down the slide after gently caressing Glen's feet.

We were surrounded by massive cliff walls and enjoyed views of Marcy and, in our faces Redfield with the massive slabs aforementioned. The slabs looked very steep. Maybe too steep for us but we would see when we got to them. Many pictures later of Cliff's cliffs we were at the bottom of the slide. Sylvie, who was in the Adams fire tower, and I spoke over the radio. The signal somehow rounded the corner of Cliff's south end. I told her we would be out at 6 and to turn the radio on at that time to leave it on. It was now noon.

The slabs were only about 600 yards away but it took a lot of time and energy to get from Upper Twin Brook up to the lower north corner through the blowdown-rich woods. Massive cliffs suddenly appeared, towering vertically above us and they marched off towards the south. We followed along the cliff base until vertical became steep slab. We had arrived at that fine demarcation between hiking and technical climbing. The slabs above us were friction-climbable but we couldn't see beyond a 10-foot overhanging wall. The last thing we wanted was to get up there only to be stuck. Down-climbing would be impossible without a rope. As a result we kept to the slab's base and side-hilled across.

The slabs extend for a quarter mile horizontally and in the pictures this traverse looks easy but was in fact quite difficult, especially when there was a layer of friable black lichen. We painstakingly traversed, sometimes upwards and at other times downwards, always eying hungrily the upper reaches of the slabs, which grew steeper as you ascended them. The 400 yard traverse ate up an amazing amount of time and energy but this was what we had come for so we were content to let the hike roll. Everywhere the gaze fell it was beautiful, from the distant Colden slides to the extensive cliffs across the valley floor on mighty Cliff. It was important that we respect the limits of our abilities and rein in our desire to slab-climb higher at the risk of getting into trouble or falling. We were in a remote location and I had just read an account of two Spot devices on the same expedition failing to transmit SOS calls in the Canadian Rockies.

After one exhausting ascent that ended in a cliff wall and steep slab we retreated down-slope a long ways through thick cedars and along the slab's edge. We crossed the bottom of this finger of rock and began to climb right back up again. The slope was close to 45 degrees and we alternated between sections of clean slab and crazy-thick vegetation. It was about here that I noticed we were slowing down and I was feeling tired. I was pausing more often to let the burn in my quads diminish and the pounding in my chest subside. In the hot sun we were sucking greedily on our water hoses.

At 3 pm at 3500' and nearly a mile from the summit I sat down and said to Glen it was time to examine our bailout options. We were getting a whipping and I had to be in class in Montreal at 7:30 the next morning. Continuing to the summit would get us out at 11:00 and put me in bed at around 2am. Sylvie would be worried waiting for us at the trailhead or until we could get line of sight radio contact.

We had two choices after descending to Upper Twin Brook:
1-Ascend Upper Twin Brk. through the Cliff-Red col then descend to the official trail down the Opalescent to Lake Colden and out.
2-Descend the same brook to the junction of the Allen and Hanging Spears trails.

Glen favored the latter and was sure we would pick up the old trail. We debated back and forth and opted for #2. I could see the old trail and the various roads around the Allen trail on my GPS. The Hanging Spears Trail was less than 2 miles away. The steep initial descent went slowly and then the more gently sloped woods were thick but we progressed steadily towards the brook. And suddenly, we saw we were on the old trail and saw a marker! We were able to follow the old trail much more easily than I would have ever imagined. The elevation loss went much more quickly than had we been bushwhacking. We eventually picked up the Allen trail and hoofed it out to the Allen trailhead four hours after our turn-around point. I got to bed at 11 pm.

Adirondack Loj parking

Can anyone help me with the parking situation at the Loj.... I've read you need to be staying there to park there, just wondering if that is the case or not. I'm doing wright, iroquois, algonquin first weekend in October. Thanks all!

Gray, Skylight & Marcy 9/20

This was some sort of anniversary hike, as it has now been a year from my hike up Big Slide that rekindled my passion for the Dacks, so I planned a special hike to an oft-favored summit, Skylight.

I parked at the absolutely best parking spot at the Loj and was on the trail at 5:20. I used a new headlamp I had gotten a few weeks ago but had not previously used because it is bulkier than I expected. But boy is it bright, even on the lowest setting.

After a week or so without rain, the trails were dry, at least initially. The trail from Marcy dam to Lake Arnold was straight and wide, and with a constant grade, so not a particularly interesting section (which is probably why I remembered nothing of it from my trip to Colden many years ago).

After the Colden trail junction, the trail became more interesting and more muddy too. In this next part, you actually lose 500’ elevation. Just before entering the marshlands, there is this nice viewpoint (I assume Gary and/or Skylight are in this shot:

This area has dozens of planks to get you through the mud. It’s a good practice for what’s to come. I actually slipped and fell on one of them, was a little sore for a while until I could walk it off.

I mentioned it had not rained for maybe a week, so I was hoping for ideal conditions at the Feldspar bog. So my heart sank (only figuratively, thankfully) when I saw this:

Is there a way around this? Is there a better way across than what is in the picture? No to both questions. Hiking poles are useful to test the logs before stepping on them, but they will not save you if you lose balance since the bog is deep. Some are attached at both ends, some are not, one of them rolls and one is below a foot of water, and most of them will bob up and down as you make your way across. They call them the “floating logs” for a reason.

After that, you turn left on the Marcy trail following Feldspar brook until the mouth of Lake Tear of the Clouds. At this point, you turn left for Gray.

There are two slabs on this section that scared me a little, both of them involving the use of 4 limbs (but on my way down, I found there are bypasses for both). The summit of Gray was nice, it’s really close to Marcy and the views here are better than Cliff and Redfield which were my previous summits.

Back down to the Lake, you walk a bit further up until the junction known as Four Corners, Right takes you to Skylight. So many people mention this as their favorite ADK summit that I wondered if it was somewhat over-hyped. After all, how could it be that much different than all the other ones beside it? Well, first off, there is no funny business going up – no slabs, no mud, no false summit. Then you get to climb above the tree line to a huge summit area with unobstructed views in all directions. Finally, because of its remoteness, there are very few people here.

Back at the Four Corners, I briefly pondered whether I’d come back through the bog or go over Marcy, but the latter seemed much more appealing. It looked so close! Also, I’d get to stop by Indian Falls, a favorite spot of mine.
It turned out I didn’t have a whole of climbing energy left, so going up Marcy was a struggle; but taking breaks gave me more time to enjoy the views.

There were maybe 15-20 people on top of Marcy (this was on a Friday). And a whole lot of black flies, which I not at all expected. Looking back at Skylight:

The long and rocky trail back to car was not easy and my feet were sore as hell, but Indian Falls did not fail to amaze me and Marcy Dam was splendid.
