W. Stony Cr. via Benson Rd, 11 Sep, 2019

It was a humid and damp morning when Tredhed and I hit the road for our hike to the new lean-to on the Northville-Placid trail in Benson. It had been four years since I last visited this area. http://www.adkforum.com/showthread.php?t=22306 . It was definitely time to go back and check out the lean-to deep in the heart of the Shaker Mt. Wild Forest.

We made it to the trailhead just as another gentleman was section hiking the NPT to Upper Benson.

We exchanged pleasantries and headed our separate ways. He, to the north and us, to the south.

The trail starts out with a gradual climb of 200' up the shoulder of an unnamed hill through a hardwood forest.

As the trail wanders through the big woods, it passes through some mixed woods.

We passed some interesting rock formations.

After and hour and a half of gentle walking, we came to the 500' descent into the West Stony Creek valley. Here, we noticed some significant blowdown on the trail.

Soon enough, we made it to the ford of the West Stony Cr.

The lean-to was about a hundred yards downstream from the ford on a path marked by red ribbons.

After resting a little, we struck out across the West Stony Cr. to explore the old Trypoli Cr. campsite.

After scratching my itch to reminisce about past adventures, we admired the view of the surrounding hills and the ice meadows.

All that was left to do was to rock hop across the creek and have a bit of lunch at the lean-to. We admired the handiwork and attention to detail the crew put into building the well kept structure. Of course, the natural scenery was pretty neat too.

All that was left to do was hike back out the same way we came in.

Back at the trailhead, we noticed our friend who was hiking to Upper Benson hadn't made it back yet. The two mile road walk doesn't look that thrilling, but we'll probably hike it someday. All-in-all, we put about 8 miles on the boots on this warm, humid day. Stopping by the Hamilton County Mosquito Preserve, we had time to take a quick dip in the lake and wash the trail dust out of our throats. A great day to be in the woods.
