I'm relatively new to the site, so I have some general (then specific) questions about camping in the Adirondacks. I have never camped in the area besides at campgrounds, and I was wondering what the regulations are in the rest of the area? I know on the high peaks trails it's 150 feet off any trail and away from water, is this how it is in the entire region? Can I just park along any road (provided there's not a No Parking sign) and just hike in 150 feet for the night?
It's going to be my girlfriend's first time hiking in the Adirondacks, so she wants to camp somewhere secluded to experience the area, not at the KOA or Loj. We are hiking Santanoni peak, then going back home along 28N then 28 past Raquette Lake. Any help on where we should camp is appreciated. We're just looking for a secluded area that's easy to access, can we just stop somewhere and camp, or do we have to find an established spot? If we need an established spot, please let us know where we'd want to park.
