Today's hike was a bushwhack up Moose Mt. in the Wilcox lake Wild Forest from Pumpkin Hollow Rd. We arrived at the Murphy Lake trail parking lot just as the black flies were waking up. Not biting today, but just a gentle reminder of things to come.
The route was pretty straight forward; walk up until you can't go up any higher. Actually, we headed down the Willis Lake outlet, hopped across the Coulombe Cr. and cut the old logging road up the face of the mountain. After that, it was short bushwahack up to the cliffs.
As expected, the view today was fantastic. The big three; Cathead, Wallace and Three Ponds Mountains were laid out before us along the horizon. We could even see a sliver of the Sacandaga Reservoir off in the distance. As we explored the summit, a superb view up the valley of the West Branch of the Sacandaga River unfolded. Framed by Finch and Dugway Mountains, the West Branch Gorge was as scenic as ever.
After a few hours of soaking in the sights, it was time to head back down the hill. It was a little warm, but proper hydration and sunscreen saved the day. Fortunate to have seen some fantastic scenery and some great old woods, I'll remember this hike for some time to come.
