Okay, Okay, Okay, how about this?
As an alternate to the Cedar -Hudson loop, how about a Rock Pond/River to Essex Chain through trip?
The group heads to the Essex Chain Lakes via Rt 30, stopping by the trail to Rock Pond along the way. The heartiest (or most foolish) ones of the group carry to Rock Pond, with day packs only. The rest of the group continues on up to the Chain Lakes with all the camping gear.
The hearty (or foolish) boys paddle Rock Pond and as much of the Rock River as possible, lining/carrying until they reach the Chain Drain.
The others (not to be confused with "The Others" from Lost) find a suitable campsite and drag the hearty boys' gear with them to the site. Some or all of the others paddle the Chain Drain all the way to the Rock River.
Everyone meets up and paddles back to the chosen campsite and spends the next few days on the Chain Lakes.
The carry to Rock Pond is 0.8 miles, total distance to the Chain Drain-Rock confluence is 5.25 mile (including that 0.8 mile carry), Rock Pond elevation is 1713 ft, the Rock River is 1550 ft at the confluence, an average drop of 37 ft/mile. I know there are several big drops and cascades, so the actual navigable ft/mile is less than 37 ft/mile.
This trip would not require any elaborate car shuttles, only the commitment of the others to carry the gear for the hearty. Could be done by a party of 4, best for 6 or maybe more.
Well, how does it sound??
