Arrived at the Clay Meadows trailhead on Route 9N just before midnight. There were three cars already there, probably camped at the lean-to. Got started at about 6:00 AM and elected to do the loop counter clockwise this time. The 5.2 miles along the shore to Montcalm Point went quickly. The trail was mostly dry with a few mud holes and some wet spots along the shore. No snow and no bugs. It was a perfect day for a spring hike, cool and clear. Great views along the shore.
The route back up the range is a chore. The map shows three named peaks, but there are at least seven climbs, always one more when you think youre on the last one. Spectacular views of Lake George and the Narrows. Reached Fifth Peak Summit and Deer Leap Junction, down and out to the trailhead just before 6:00 PM. No other cars in the lot now.
Took it slow, 12 hours for 13 miles, first hike of the season and didnt want to leave the woods too early. Saw no other hikers the entire day. No rattlesnakes either.
Gave the car the lead and bored a hole through the bugs back to Buffalo.
