ATVs on the Forest Preserve: Will it happen?

Something has come to my attention in recent months that has both shocked me and got me thinking.

GeoTerra Mats to be specific:

They are already being used as an anti-erosion device in Alaska for ATV trails.

The cost is rather high, but it only seems like a matter of time before these could be applied to snowmobile trails in the NYS Wild Forests to allow ATV usage during the warmer months.

And you also might say that this is against the 'forever wild' clause of Article 14 but I'll point out that maintaining 8' wide, graded trails for snowmobile travel isn't exactly letting that area of land be 'wild'.

It's a scary thought. But erosion is the last real wall keeping them out. If that can be solved, then what is stopping it?
