A friend and I attempted Allen on Sunday, but got too late a start and were turned back by torrential rain near the bottom of the slide. We passed a few groups of hikers, but that was all, except for one point where we were sure we heard something large in the woods. Like a large object falling. We thought nothing much of it, but made a joke about telling our friends we heard sasquatch. hardy harr harr. Other than that our hike was dismal, but pretty uneventful.
Meanwhile...There is a facebook group called "Aspiring Adirondack 46ers". And today someone else who had hiked Allen that day, who we remember passing, posted a story on facebook that is a little spooky.
Apparently they passed the same person several times on their way out, and met him again at the trailhead. He just kept showing up here and there on the trail, and moving from behind them to in front of them without passing them, apparently moving quite quickly through the woods to get in front of them. He was wearing a red poncho or cape, and prominently carrying a large knife in a sheath on his shoulder. He doesn't seem to have said or done anything obviously threatening, except for appearing repeatedly. They also had the same experience of hearing something nearby in the woods; the same sound, a heavy object falling.
