Friday I ventured to the Nun-Da-Ga-O range (Soda Range) in the Hurricane Mountain Primitive Area to hike the Crows, Nun-Da-Ga-O range and Hurricane Mountain. I've haven't been in this area in the summer, only winter. Obviously it looked quite different and it was quite an enjoyable day. Rev noticed one porcupine, but she took my advice and stayed away from it.
I only saw one group on the Nun-Da-Ga-O range, but lots of people were on the trail to Hurricane. I also counted 9 dogs. This surprised me for a Friday.
The 2 leantos on the loop have both been rebuilt. The Gulf Brook leanto was moved away from the brook and is now .1 miles further from the parking lot. It is now sited in a pretty spot away from the water.
Big Crow provides a great view for a 20 minute walk. Great views also from the open ledges on the middle of the Nun-Da-Ga-O ridge (and of course from Hurricane).
The Nun-Da-Ga-O ridge portion of the loop is an unmarked herd path, but the herd path is easy to follow.
No bugs on the day. The last time I was on Hurricane, the trail was bugfree, but the summit was swarming with black flies. Great day out.
Pics and full report here .
