Cedar River Flow Island Campsite

Last year when I paddled on Cedar River Flow, I checked out a campsite on the tiny island just around the point from the put-in, on the main body of the flow on the west side. Does anyone know if this site is legal? The island is very tiny, so it's difficult to imagine the DEC constructing a designated site there, but there were no "No Camping" signs and the site looked established and well used.
