Emptying a house in Hartford, NY

I spent the weekend moving my in-laws from a house they've lived in for 30 years in Hartford, NY to a more senior friendly location closer to family in CT.

The amount of stuff that has accumulated over those 30 years is mind boggling -- and now comes the task of disposing of all that stuff. So, for anyone who is familiar with the area and would care to offer suggestions on some of the following, either respond to this post or PM me.

  • Large collection of books, mostly hardcover but some paperbacks -- are there any local libraries or other organizations that has used book sales where we could donate these books ?

  • Large collection of fabric which may be of value to quilters or sewers. I'm talking 6-7 large totes of misc/scrap fabric.

  • scrap metal - buckets of old nuts/bolts/nails/tools/etc... Any junkyards around that take scrap metal, or any scrappers who want to come pick the stuff up ?

  • The remaining furniture/old clothes that aren't too trashed -- are there any organizations in that area that would pickup, such as Amvets or Goodwill ?

I know I could just put all this stuff in a dumpster, but if it has some use or value to someone I'd rather pass it on than have it go to a landfill. Plus, there's a burn ban in the area so I can't burn anything.

So any suggestions are welcome -- thanks in advance...

Bob
