At what point did you instructors want to teach?

I had a discussion with a co worker today and it led me to this question.

It seems her fiance wants to learn a MA where he can be certified to teach. He is big into fitness but has never studied any MA. He is looking into Krav Maga.

Which is all well and good. I am not passing judgement, but I am curious. Why would someone decide they want to teach something before even studying it or knowing it? He isn't alone. I know others from MA forums that joined with a goal of teaching before really studying or barely having begun.

I asked her, she said something about him really being into fitness, but why MA instruction then? Why not some other sort of fitness instructor? But I didn't push the issue because she is a great worker and I like working with her. But she is a substitute so I don't know her that well and didn't want to come across wrong.

But it did get me wondering. Let's face it, most MA instructors don't make tons of money. I can see a love for an art long studied bringing one to want to pass it on. But if not that, is it the supposed glamour of being a MA teacher?

Anyways, to those of you who teach, did any of you want to teach before studying a MA? Did it influence your choice of MA? That is - did you look at how you could get qualified to teach in various MA's with that influencing your decision on what to learn?

If not, when in your MA journey did the idea/ goal of teaching come into play? How did you go about getting there? Anything else related to this topic you care to share? Do you have observations of other instructors you have been around or taught with?

Me, even if I was good enough (which I am not), I wouldn't want to teach. I do MA as an escape from the rigors of work and things in life - I wouldn't want to turn it into a job. I want my Sifu to be my Sifu. I don't want that sort of relationship with him where he is my boss. Or alternatively, If I went to a school with a different set up, I wouldn't want to have to run a school and deal with all the business side of things that take away from training.
