Karate-do, the way of the empty hand. Same kanji apparently as tang soo do, the Korean version of karate.
It occurs to me that the term is as generic to Japanese as kung fu is in Chinese. Ie there are many variations.
Karate is a catch all term referring to unarmed combat with Japanese, Okinawan and Chinese influence.
So this got me to thinking. Less say one was to modify a technique to work around a physical limitation of the practioner. For example, taking the muy Thai style roundhouse and striking with the shin rather than the foot. Or lifting and technique straight from aikido because it seems to fit naturally in the moment. Would that be karate?
