Small Stream Brook Trout

I've spent some time in the past couple of years exploring the small streams of the SW ADK and Catskills with a fly rod in hand. There is nothing better to me than catching a wild brookie from a stream so remote you wonder if they've ever seen a flyline before.

Alot of people dont understand the appeal of catching these small fish which is fine to me.

But I've always wondered why these fish never seem to get all that big. I know they get big in the ponds but why do they rarely seem to get bigger than 10" in even decent sized streams?

Are they dying before they can grow that big due to acid rain? Is it just the strain of trout we have? Am I just a bad fisherman?

Any ideas out there?
