Tips for hunting Black Bears?

So in my short time as a hunter I have never been able to harvest a bear.
I have not been present when those in the hunting party actually did. Every year the tag goes unfilled.
What tips would you offer to a novice?
I have seen tracks, which would be a good starting point I suppose, but what habitat, feeding habits etc,.. should I look for?
