Treadway Mtn 5-17-17 & black flies

Did 2 nights of camping with a hike up Treadway Wed 5/17. Gorgeous warm weather and sunshine was welcoming along with still budding trees. Only saw a few people around Putts pond and no one on the hike to Treadway. Trail in good shape (nice bridges), with only a few wet spots plus one totally flooded section of 50 yds perhaps .5 mi above (west on) final red trail turnoff, just before it gets steep. Tricky detour with no thought of walking through this invisible section until the area drains.

More open rock hiking with cairns then i remembered (after false summit). The view from top was great, nearly 360 & clear. Puddles in summit rocks welcomed by the dogs. somewhat bug free zone.

Despite a slight breeze at most times, the black flies were as bad as I ever recall, even sometimes while hiking. When stationary, a head net was often essential. Fortunately, we both had one, and the dogs were infrequently attacked. At our exposed breezy campsite, often 20-50 flies in field of view. Long pants/sleeves and net got surprisingly uncomfortable with the heat (over 90 in Albany). Bugs subsided 7-7:30 pm. Not much break in AM so eating with net became the norm until evening. DEET not effective (at any strength we had) nor other attempted repellants. Still scratching welts on lower legs. did not fish.
