1000 Acre Swamp

Today I had to stick close to home, so I went to explore the 1000 Acre Swamp area between Edinburg and Lake Desolation. The trails up there are closed for snowmobiles, but there is still plenty of snow to enjoy. Little Hans Creek is much more open than it was when I was there the last time. (Photo 1) I did go back to see the spot where I fell thru the ice a couple of weeks ago. (Photo 2). Much to my complete surprise, I could actually see my lost snowshoe hung up on something under the water. It was about 25 feet downstream from where I fell in. (Photo 3). I couldn't get to it today, but once the snow melts, I'm going to go get it. After all, I know for a fact that water is only knee deep. ;) Afterward, I went back to the trails and wandered, just enjoying the sunshine and warm temps, and watching Spring make it's slow appearance. (Photo 4).

Oh yeah, I saw some moose tracks too. Score!!!

Sandbox, On The Cloud, Saving Big Bucks For Your Business

Exploiting legitimate software flaws became an efficient commodity for cybercriminals in 2017, as malicious activities can be easily hidden behind trusted processes. Even an experienced cybersecurity team can’t always be sure if it has spotted all the malware using such concealment techniques.

To achieve that, teams have to be equipped with advanced detection technologies, including sandboxing, which often requires significant hardware investments that are not easily feasible for many IT Security teams.

With Kaspersky Cloud Sandbox, advanced detection and forensic capabilities are available as a service within the Kaspersky Threat Intelligence Portal, allowing cybersecurity teams to ensure they meet their budget requirements while also benefitting from advanced technology.

The service enables cybersecurity teams and security operations center (SOC) specialists to obtain deep insights into malware behavior and design, detecting targeted cyberthreats that were not identified in the wild.

Advanced anti-evasion techniques: revealing a hidden truth

To lure malware into revealing its harmful potential, sandbox technology performance should possess advanced anti-evasion techniques. A malicious program, developed to run in a certain software environment, will not explode on a ‘clean’ virtual machine, and will most probably destroy itself without a trace.

To avoid this, Kaspersky Cloud Sandbox applies the user’s various emulation techniques, such as Windows button clicking, document scrolling, special routine processes giving malware an opportunity to expose itself, the randomization of user environment parameters and many others.

Spring backpacking suggestions

Hello everyone, I am hoping to get some suggestions for a decent spring backpacking trip. It's looking like I won't be able to get out for another couple weeks so probably mid april at the earliest. Planning on 2 nights. I prefer to try to stay away from the crowds. My girlfriend is gonna be tagging along with me. She asked if I could take her somewhere "not too muddy" I told her that's probably not gonna happen this time of year. I'll be heading up from th Syracuse area so trying to keep the drive time within a couple hours. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Silver Lakes Wilderness - Becker Hill?

I ran across the name of a hill that I haven't found on any topos or maps that I have access to. It's somewhere in the vicinity of Whitehouse, but it's probably a nickname used for a location. It dates to at least the 1950s and I was wondering if any of the resident keepers of ADK lore have heard of it or could point to it on a map.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Lake Desolation Ski - 3/25/18

Great spring ski conditions at Lake Desolation this afternoon. Snow cover is still very good, but it will melt quickly with the warm temperatures and strong sun early this week. Be very careful with any water crossings. A few pictures of the sunny sky.

Easy Snowshoe Trips in the Southern 'Daks

Hello All,

It was a lovely early Spring weekend to be out and about. I didn't have time for any long outings, so I settled for 2 short but very satisfying trips. On Sat. I took the dogs and went to Broomstick Lake. We had the trail to ourselves. I was surprised there was no one else out, considering the lovely weather and the relatively short and easy trail. The parking lot was plowed out and the trail was well packed. (Photo 1)

I made excellent time getting to the lake. I have only been there once before, and that was in the summertime. I was delighted to see the trail continued on along to the other side of the lake, so I just had to follow it. (Photo 2). I was very taken by a group of three trees standing sentinel along the shore. (Photo 3)

The trail went all the way to the far end of the lake and into the woods. It then followed a small brook to some lovely cliffs. (Photo 4) I never knew these cliffs were there. The pic doesn't do them justice. The trail ended at a log that had fallen across the trail. It was a good place to sit and enjoy the beauty and solitude. All too soon, I had to head back.

On Sunday, I had a great breakfast of hot coffee and biscuits smothered in sausage gravy at the Hope Diner. Then I headed to Pumpkin Hollow Road. I went North from the trail head. Again, I was the only one out. The trail was well used by snowmobiles, but there were many bare patches and exposed boulders. I guess that explains why I didn't see any snowmobiles! Near the beginning, the trail passed by Willis Lake Outlet. (Photo 5) The whole way the woods were open and inviting and the trail well packed. (Photo 6) I only went out to the bridge that crosses Coulombe Creek and then had to turn around. (Photo 7) I wish I had the time (and the fitness level) to go all the way to Pine Orchard from there. Maybe next year.:-)

Altogether it was a fabulous weekend to be out enjoying the beautiful 'Daks.

Schrader Creek Valley Vistas

https://endlessmountains.wordpress.c...vistas-sgl-36/

An excellent hike from last weekend to a series of cliffs with excellent views over the isolated Schrader Creek Valley (PA). I could hear the rapids of the creek clearly from the cliffs, even though it was hundreds of feet below. I was surprised by the number of views and the huge overhanging cliffs and ledges. This little-known area in PA has tall waterfalls, whitewater, rock climbing, ponds, gorges, vistas, and historical remnants.

Hoffman Notch Ski - 3/24/18

Skied Hoffman Notch from the south as far as Big Marsh. Snow coverage was very good with classic spring conditions - icy snow transitioning to wet snow. Stream crossings and numerous blowdowns were challenging, but overall it was an excellent early spring ski trip.

Self-Storage

Hi guys, I am a photographer by profession and a nature lover by birth. I am a very open person who has a craving for travel. Frequent traveling breaks you out from your comfort zone. It’s a good way to interact with many people and to learn a lot about the culture and diversity of different places. I love traveling more than anything. I was born in Montreal and I used to live in Toronto. Now I am planning to go to Thailand. It’s one of my favorite destinations. Hopefully, I will be leaving very soon. But before I leave, I have to take care of few of my things here. After I return from my Thailand trip, I will be moving to some other cities in the country. So till I return, I need a space to keep my furniture, bed and a vehicle safely. Is it practical to have storage units for heavy kinds of stuff like furniture and all? I am looking for some of the cheap storage services available in Toronto. Since I haven't used any self-storage facilities, I don't have any idea regarding this. Is it a good method to keep our belongings unimpaired?. Please do share your opinion.

Millman Pond, LGWF, 21 Mar, 2018

Today's long awaited "Lunch at a lean-to" brought Tredhed and me to Millman Pond in the Lake George Wild Forest. We've been wanting to go here for some time and the first full day of spring seemed like a good day to go...and it was.

Arriving at the Pike Brook Rd. trailhead around 9:00, we quickly strapped on the Tubbs and headed up the trail through filtered sun and a stiff north breeze.

The trail, actually an old road that was recently groomed for snowmobiles, was a dream to walk on. It was hard packed and we made good time as it wound through the woods, gaining 200+ feet.

Turning off the Red disked trail to Black Mt., we picked up the Yellow disked trail and soon came to a vly with a great view of the Black Mt. firetower.

From the vly, we could hear the windmill on the top of Black Mt. "thumping" away. We were both glad that we weren't planning to go there today. That huge, spinning blade always intimidates me.

The Yellow disked trail then climbed through a small saddle between drainages.

It soon deposited us on the north shore of Lapland Pond.

We took a short detour to visit the lean-to and were not surprised to see it a little worse for wear and tear. That's usually been the case whenever we've visited Lapland Pond.

Undaunted, we continued on the Yellow disked trail for Millman Pond as opposed to striking out across the ice. It probably would have been OK, but ...

The restless trail around the marshes of Lapland Pond had quite a bit of ups and downs. It wasn't that big of a deal, but it was untraveled by snowmobiles and suffered from some bare boot damage.

Walking through the hemlocks was an absolute joy! :clap

After regaining the groomed snowmobile trail on the SW side of Lapland Pond, there was a short, steep climb up to the marshy shores of Millman Pond.

Again, we decided to stick to the woods and were rewarded with another beautiful grove of hemlocks to walk through.

After a few minutes, the lean-to came into view.

Perched high on a ridge separating Millman Pond from a large swamp, this is one of the best maintained lean-tos we've ever seen. Kudos to Russ and his buddies who maintain this gem.:thumbs::thumbs: While Lapland Pond's LT looks like it was ridden hard and put away wet, the one at Millman Pond is spectacular.

After a relaxing lunch of clam chowder and cookies. Tredhed made our lean-to log entry as I enjoyed some of the current periodicals from the lean-to library. Prior to departing, we recited the thoughtful prayer posted to the wall.

Now I lay me down to rest
A pile of maps across my chest
If I die before I wake
That's one less hike I have to take.

Great hike!

I see this a lot & I’m honestly curious why they seem to never publicly mention the names of the violators, but they are always sure to include the names of the enforcement officials involved…?
Why not make violators of NYSDEC regulations public also?

Mt. Marcy Conditions

Hello!
My Boyfriend and I are planning a late April hike up Mt. Marcy. Can anyone tell me what the trail conditions are typically like at this time of the year? I'm trying to prepare our packing list!
Our plan is to use two days to hike the trail.
Thank you!

Tippet rings?

Anyone try them and love em or hate them? Reading about them-extends leader life and and offers easier dropper set up, but perhaps impacts the cast, spooks the fish, one more tiny item to loose, and can get caught on rocks.

Second Pond - 3/17/18

Skied to Second Pond on St. Patricks Day. Snow conditions were outstanding, plenty of cover. Similar to my past few trips, there were quite a few streams and wet ares to negotiate, but overall the trail was excellent with no blowdown. We followed snowshoe tracks for the first mile and then broke trail the rest of the way to the pond. It was very windy with blowing and drifting snow. Chatiemac Rd was in good shape, but the trailhead parking was not plowed. There is room for a few cars at the trailhead. We did not see anyone else for the entire trip.

ADK Forum Outings

Hey All,

Over the years I've watched enviously from the sidelines when Forum outings have been arranged and then discussed afterward. My schedule usually has me working on weekends, which, although it leads to my going on trips mid-week and enjoying some solitude, means I can't usually go when others can and often have to go solo.

I'm wondering if anyone has any interest in organizing a Forum trip in the early part of the week- I'm thinking Sunday, Monday, Tuesday. I know that eliminates most people with normal jobs. I'd like to go around the end of April or early May. My typical late spring ADK trip has always been a 5-8 mile hike in to nice spot near a lake or pond, and then basecamping a dayhiking from there, but I'm open to variations. I have some ideas for a few different destinations, but again, I'm open to other ideas as well. If anyone has interest in this, we can get more specific about time and destinations.

Smart eye: Someone could be watching your child

Smart eye: Flaws that could transform popular smart cameras into surveillance tool

Kaspersky Lab researchers have discovered multiple security vulnerabilities in popular smart cameras that are frequently used as baby monitors, or for internal home and office security surveillance.

According to the research, the uncovered flaws could allow attackers to obtain remote access to video and audio feeds from the cameras, remotely disable these devices, execute arbitrary malicious code on them and do many other things.

Modern smart cameras contain an advanced number of functions, providing users with various opportunities: people can use them as advanced baby monitors or for surveillance systems which spot intruders while no one is home or in the office.

But, are these cameras secure enough by design and what if such a smart camera started watching you, instead of watching your home?

Previous analysis conducted by many other security researchers has shown that smart cameras in general tend to contain security vulnerabilities at different levels of severity.

However, in their latest research, Kaspersky Lab experts uncovered something extraordinary: not just one, but a whole range of smart cameras was found to be vulnerable to a number of severe remote attacks.

This was due to an insecurely designed cloud-backbone system that was initially created to enable the owners of these cameras to remotely access video from their devices.

By exploiting these vulnerabilities, malicious users could execute the following attacks:
• Access video and audio feeds from any camera connected to the vulnerable cloud service;
• Remotely gain root access to a camera and use it as an entry-point for further attacks on other devices on both local and external networks.
• Remotely upload and execute arbitrary malicious code on the cameras;
• Steal personal information such as users’ social network accounts and information which is used to send users notifications.
• Remotely “brick” vulnerable cameras.

All these attacks were possible because experts found that the way the cameras interacted with the cloud service was insecure and open to relatively easy interference.

They also found that the architecture of the cloud service itself was vulnerable to external interference.

It is important to note that such attacks were only possible if attackers knew the serial number of the camera. However, the way in which serial numbers are generated is relatively easy to find out through simple brute-force attacks: the camera registering system didn’t have brute force protection.

In order to stay protected:
• Always change the default password. Use a complex one instead and do not forget to update it regularly.
• Pay close attention to security issues of connected devices before purchasing yet another smart device for homes or offices. Information on discovered and patched vulnerabilities is usually available online and is often easy to find.

Watch out all!!

Kane mtn. Near 9 corner lake. Conditions?

Thinking about heading out there this weekend. Appears to be about 5-600ft elevation gain over .5 miles.

Is this doable in snowshoes this time of year?

My friend is concerned it will be more of a bouldering expedition requiring crampons and ropes due to the steep angle.

From what I can see the trail heads up the easiest slope.

Thoughts?

Hunting/Tracking Sidearm

I'm looking to pick up a pistol for dispatching wounded game (as part of the DEC's leashed tracking dog license). I've spent a season walking around with a shotgun or rifle, and while I'll always consider that option, I'd also like to have the option of a more portable, but still lethal, pistol.

The only animals we can track here in NY are bear and deer, so I want a cartridge that can effectively deal with both. I had considered .40s&w at first, but I think that might be on the light side (or entirely inadequate) for bear. I started looking at magnum revolvers. Something like a .44 magnum would be more than capable for taking either animal, but it's also heavy and kicks pretty hard from what I understand.

What do hunters here think about using a .357 magnum? Something like a 6 or 8 shot pistol would probably be no heavier than a regular semi-automatic pistol. I've heard some internet forum goers say that .357 magnum isn't enough for black bear, while others say it should work just fine. As with anything discussed on the internet, there is often a lot of hype and exaggeration.

Thoughts?

Two Ways to Support the Keene Valley Grocery

The Keene Valley Grocery, long a resource for High Peaks explorers, burned down on Sunday. The building is a total loss. The owners and employees are out of work and are considering their options. Now is the time for the Adirondack outdoors community to step up, in this time of need.

There are two ways to donate to support The Valley Grocery:

A fund has been established by friends and neighbors for donations to help the Valley Grocery family affected by the loss of their business. The Adirondack Foundation Special and Urgent Needs Fund (SUN) is ready to handle tax deductible donations for the Valley Grocery.

The link to donate by credit card is:
https://www.adirondackfoundation.org...ent-needs-fund

Checks should be made payable to "Adirondack Foundation: SUN Fund" with "Valley Grocery" in the memo line. Mail checks to:

Adirondack Foundation
PO Box 288
Lake Placid, NY 12946

Donations can also continue to be made through the Keene Valley Congregational Church:

In response to this loss, the church will have a special offering this Sunday, with proceeds going to the owners. If you would like to make a donation to Keene Valley Congregational Church please memo- note "Valley Grocery" on your check, or place your cash donation in an envelope marked "Valley Grocery." For members and friends currently away from our community, or those who will not be with us during worship this Sunday, you may forward donations to the church and we will make sure they get passed on as indicated.

The church's address is:

1791 NYS Route 73, PO Box 27
Keene Valley, NY 12943

Let us also keep all those impacted by the fire in our prayers and thoughts, reaching out to them in love and support.

Blessings,

Pastor John
